I think this is exactly what I've been looking for. What you've described is exactly my problem, I've been straining when trying to sing above a C4 and I do what someone called a high larynx. Thank you, Doug!

I started to sing 3 years ago. I am 82 years old. I started with my chest voice up to D4. My coach has me singing up to A5 with my chest voice but I only can easily go up to F4. It is amazing what a good coach can do.

Hey doug would this be a kind of mandatory exercise to gain range? - or could you do without modifications and still gain? - I've gotten to an A4 so far without them in mind, so I'm guessing my voice naturally learned to modify - however I will try this out if it makes it easier. So would you say this is a mandatory step for range?. Also would be awesome if you made a video on vocal stamina, inform us about when the voice generally gets tired while singing with certain intensities - being able to sing for more than 3hours and such. Btw, I know the breathing method kind of should make it obvious - but I thought it's worth mentioning that you probably have to keep the same open mouth position as the breathing method when doing the AH - a lot of people might assume it's just part of the breath and close the mouth on AH. I've been wanting to do a lesson with you for a long time, but I haven't been able to get the practice circumstances required to have a skype lesson - the only place I can practice is the car and my mobile phone internet is slow and probably won't work for a lesson sadly.

Hey Mikael, I would say learning to modify your vowels is quite a mandatory step for building the vocal range range yes. However when trying to increase your range there are so many things unique to your voice that may or may not need to be developed. For example, have you noticed A4/A#4 for guys can be difficult to sing above? That indicates to me that there is likely another break in your voice that you need to smooth it out to sing higher. Without me hearing your voice, I can't tell you what YOUR voice needs to get above A4. Maybe you need to work on your falsetto to chest connection, maybe you to learn how to sing without getting too breathy, maybe you need to modify and deepen your vowels more etc. What you need to do to train your voice is entirely dependent on your own individual struggles. I would say however vowel modifications is very important to train in order to make sure the larynx does not become overly tight and high as I pointed out in this vid. Yes you're right, you should be singing the AH scales with the mouth tall and open just like I demonstrated. I forget to mention it when I was demonstrating the scales so thank you for saying that cause it is worth mentioning. When you fix your internet situation or house situation to be able to do lessons, I'd be happy to set up a lesson with you. If you're looking to develop your high range, this video will help you but we need to discover what specific and UNIQUE issues you are facing in your high range and then address them directly. Hello Mr. Doug, question here: If my "break" chest notes are C5 - D5, it's possible to sing them in full chest (not mix) without having to concentrate in my pure chest sound or shout them to not accidentally mix?, because i can hit them in full chest but as my last notes they are kinda complicated to focus and they auto-shift into mix and i want to be able to use them in pure chest for some songs, cheers.

Doug when I do these exercise and modify the vowel, my voice still breaks at the break. So my break is F4# and when I do this exercise I can go to an G4 but then it automatically breaks at the G4#. Even if the sound is a very deep opera sound

Okay so what I'd reccomend is still going up to that highest where the break starts as you'll begin to strengthen it. Keep doing that everyday, once your highest note becomes strong the next note should start appearing. There might be other issues showing up in your voice so please send me a clip of how you sound through my website or my Instagram and I can help you out. Thanks!

To me if you are a strong voice the only ways to get high notes without straining or shout like a tiger... Are the "damping" technique and to "lower the larynx" and finally i can sing what i want without torturing my voice.

Why do they have trouble with harmony? Because their voices strain or because they struggle to stay on pitch?
