Wireless Apple Car Play UPDATE Video: bit.ly/3EQnphG
Note: you will need to reuse the component that is connected directly under the cup holders in your original center console. It will need to be transferred to the new one. I apologize for forgetting to put that in the video. I also no longer recommend the CPlay2Air Adapter. It stopped working in less than a year due to an Apple update.

Thanks for the video. I am now working with wireless CarPlay. Something got weird when I disabled the WiFi in the truck that was provided with he OnStar Eval. To get aligned with wireless Apple CarPlay was a matter of removing my Bluetooth pairing of my iPhone with the truck and adding it back again. So problem solved. On a new note, I am planning on removing the center console to route coax and control cables for radios. Thanks for the video on removing the center console. Again, thanks for the video, you helped me on a side project, but helped me still the same. Now to get the radios setup … *smile*

I had looked at your dongle before but since it did work I am trying to find out if I can reset everything to get it to work. Thanks again for your video. It was helpful to see the console removal. I’m not sure how the built-in vehicle Wi-Fi works, but I do know that wireless Apple CarPlay needs a Wi-Fi connection in order to work. The adapter I bought for my truck allows me to connect my phone to my truck over Wi-Fi. My truck also has the built-in vehicle wi-fi but I don’t think I ever fully “disabled” it. I just don’t pay for the service. Even so, my truck did not come with the functionality to have wireless Apple CarPlay to begin with so I still needed the adapter for it. If you disabled the vehicles Wi-Fi component completely, that may be the issue. You should be able to leave the component active, but just not pay for the service if you don’t want to actually use it. Then again I’m not a Wi-Fi expert so I could be wrong. 🤔

As I was on free trial I wanted to disable using it when it was no better than cell data so where you have poor performance on the phone, same for truck enabled wifi unlimited (which is not really unlimited). I think you are referring to the piece that is tucked in under the center stack between it and the wireless charging pad (or top of the center console). Once you get any screws out of it, it’s held in with retainer clips. It takes a little bit of force but it pulls straight out towards the backseat. If you put any upward or downward force on it, it’s likely not going to pop out. Try to make sure you are pulling straight towards the back seat.

That was just a dongle for CarPlay specifically… no additional functionality. That dongle quit working less than a year later as an Apple update made it unusable. I have since upgraded my truck to having the factory wireless CarPlay setup with an upgraded infotainment system. Dons Life has a dongle that provides access to Netflix, KZread etc and has videos showing it off if you want to check out his channel. For the cup holder plug, you have to remove the theft sensor from under the factory cup holders and transfer to the new console piece (the one from 404 parts). Then you can plug that wire you disconnect back in. I hope that makes sense. I’m not entirely sure what connection you are referring to that doesn’t fit. If you want, you can send a picture of the connector you aren’t sure about to the email listed on the “About” tab of my channel page and I’ll take a look at it.

The only delay that I have noticed is when switching between songs in Apple Music (I don’t have Spotify or anything so I can’t test those services). When I click the button to switch songs it takes a second or two for the audio to make the switch. My 19 Silverado has cooling line(s) connected to AC under the factory installed wireless charger. If I don't turn un the AC the phone gets so hot during the charge and stops charging. Also, I hope Android Auto had the same wireless device too 🤔

  • @SouthpawGarage

I have noticed that this wireless charger does get hot and the GM chargers are low wattage (unfortunately). If I’m actively using Apple Car Play to play music while my phone is on the charger, the battery percentage does not increase. It basically gets just enough juice to hold where it’s at. If I am not actively playing music from my phone, it charges slowly. I think I get about 20% increase in around 30-40 minutes (unless it gets hot and stops charging). I don’t really understand why GM would use such inefficient chargers. It’s disappointing. But I usually have a way to top off outside of the truck so I’m not too concerned about the charging speed. The wireless CarPlay and not needing a cable dangling in my truck were my main concerns. Lol. I just like a nice clean, minimal set up.

Sorry about that. I don’t have an Android device so I’m not up on the accessories or related products for those. I just figured if Apple CarPlay had something, then Android Auto probably would too.

Am I the only person with a 2021 Silverado with wireless apple car play?

2021 Silverados with LTZ trim and higher should all have wireless CarPlay. 2019 & 2020 models (my truck is a 2019) did not have wireless CarPlay available at all at any trim level.

If you plugged the OEM wireless charger into the front power port, then you did this wrong. You would've also failed to provide a lot of info in your video. You need to completely remove the center console and front passenger seat in order to correctly run the wire harness. I just did this conversion in my truck, but haven't hooked up the air duct that goes to the wireless charging pad. I was hoping your video had that info, but it didn't.

I bought the direct connect plug in play kit that connects to the harness behind the 12V port in the center stack. That is explained in the video. There is no need to remove the passenger seat for the kit that I bought so, no, I did not do it wrong. I did exactly what the included instructions detailed per the kit that I purchased. The air duct isn’t hooked up because vehicles that didn’t come with the factory wireless charging don’t have an extra AC vent hose ran for that duct. You would have to cut into the vehicle’s vent hose and add a Y connector somewhere along with additional vent hose to run back to the center console. Most people aren’t going to mangle their factory AC just to connect that duct port on the wireless charger when doing this conversion.

Dude - you failed to show how to remove…only spoke…then showed nothing about the wires underneath where the new piece goes. Most important parts of install were not added.

Dude - timecode 1:00 through 6:00 clearly shows how to remove the old center console. Timecode 6:00 through 7:00 clearly shows how to pull out the center stack. Timecode 7:30 shows where to plug in the wiring harness for the new center console kit.

The only thing I did forget to put in the video is that you need to reuse the little component that is connected to the bottom of the original center console under the cup holders. That I will definitely admit and I have explained it to those in the comments who have asked about it.
