I had a customer that I did not initially realise was deaf - I wish I knew how to say hello, good bye and Thankyou at least. Came straight here just in case he came again.

I ran into a man walking his dog in my area, he's deaf but somehow we started chatting. I came home and learned some basics for the next time I saw him and today we had a full conversation, and when he saw me trying to sign, he helped me/corrected me and taught me some more. 😊 Such small gestures are so worth it, can't wait to say hello again.

I love this video thank you so much. I’m learning sign language all by my self from watching these videos. The reason behind it is that I serve a very lovely lady at work who is deaf. I want to communicate with her like I do with everyone else for her to feel welcome to our supermarket. I would love to learn about how to sign language: “the total is £50.00 please” for example. Am so happy to find this comment because I just started to learn sign language because I serve a lovely lady as well at my workplace (restaurant) I will be happy to communicate with her and am pretty sure she will be happy as well

I have a friend who's deaf and I couldn't under stand her but commanding hands had been a big help I totally recommend him

When I say thank you, I close my palm, I dont know if that's what other people do, but that's what they taught me to do, so people could see the difference between me saying please and thank you. Awsome tutorials by the way, they help my friends alot

started learning BLS today, this is the first video I've watched, I've wanted to learn to sign for a while but I've always put it off thinking it would take me ages, but this year I've decided I'll learn and this video's made it a lot easier than I thought it'd be. I'm trying to learn even the basics for the moment due to our postman being deaf, I feel the need to at least be able to say hello how are you to him. Always a mix of thumbs ups when handing me stuff and that's it. So this video is perfect!

Hi i am partly dead and i have been forever but it got really bad at 4 i was wearing a hearing aid but air was getting trapped causing me weekly ear infections so i has to swap toa cochlear headband on where its on a head band and it goes behind your ear it been over seven years of going to the doctors and they dont know whats wrong with my ears i can hear a little without my hearing aid but struggle in busy places where lots of people are talking. I struggle a lot in school but find it embarising to wear so i prefer not to wear cos people will pick on me for it like they did in my old school. I learnt bsl when i was 6 and i was fluent untill yr 6 where my teachers forced me not to use it so i could focus on sats i am now 13 and trying to learn again as i think it will be useful this video was very helpful (i dont rember any signs from when i was younger except hello)

Hi Lucy, I'm so sorry to read about your experiences, it must have been so difficult. I'm glad the videos are helpful. The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) are a fantastic charity that might be able to provide you with some further support. Their website is www.ndcs.org.uk/ It may also help to contact your local Deaf Club. Once the lockdown measures ease, they may have some family events you could attend. Good luck re-learning BSL, you can do it :)

Hi, I've just started a course on BSL and I notice you do good evening and good night differently. There are also some other signs in your other videos which are different and I am getting confused as both are meant to be BSL. Is there a reason for the differences?

This is brilliant, thank you! I have a question, I've seen the question what's your name signed in a few different ways. I've seen it in the order 'name you what' and also 'your name what'. Is there a correct way?

Thanks for watching :) Good question. At a beginner level, either is OK. More advanced BSL users will drop the subject (you or your) completely as there are non-manual features such as eye gaze that give this information. "Name what" while looking directly at the person you are asking is sufficient. As with English, there's not necessarily just one correct way to build a sentence although there are rules to follow, e.g. put the questioning word at the end of a sentence.

For clarity reasons and to follow good practice you would lip “name what” only (one may argue if signing “your” is necessary). However, you may find that some Deaf people are also comfortable users of classic English and lipping “What’s your name?” in a casual conversation may not cause great difficulty in understanding. However, if you want to be grammatically correct, name-what-?, it is.

I always wondered why deaf people still bothered to mouth the words as they were signing, but as I've started to learn I've realized that a lot of the signs are the same, just with slightly different meanings.

Wow as a deaf/ HoH guy , l find this good & bad why because hearing people may be not understand s/ l. I think the letter K should be thumb & finger spread apart , rather than using two finger to spell the letter k.

I have my own little barbers shop and one of my customers is deaf and I would like to be able to at least say hello, ask how he is, and say thank you and goodbye. It was a great video but in one of your previous videos you said please was doing the opposite movement to thankyou (moving your hand towards your chin)

Is "How are you" and "Are you OK" same signing?

GiSoraya yes, it’s also the sign for “I am doing okay” but you change your facial expression and mouth the words you want to say

Are please and thank you the same sign apart from the lip reading?

When saying your name, do you always spell it out? If you haven't got a sign language name, how do you say your name without spelling it out all the time?

Good question! You can sign the first letter of your name instead of the full name, but you'd have to establish that is the meaning by first fingerspelling your name. If you're signing to people you know, this would be OK as they'd already know your name presumably! I'd recommend attempting to pick up speed fingerspelling your name. When fingerspelling your name, attempt to create the lip pattern of your name while fingerspelling it at the same time. For me, that's easier than it will be for others! Thanks for watching ✋

You know when I'm doing signs like good morning does it matter what side I start from left to right or right to left?

I cannot understand why on earth there are dislikes! The poor specimens of human being do not appreciate their hearing.

So please and thankyou are the same? So mouthing the words is important? I just want to get it right we have a deaf lady who comes into the office occasionally and I would like to communicate with her better

People use their dominant hand to do most of the work in sign language. So for most people that's the right hand, but if you're left handed then you probably need to use your left.

is this right? ive seen so many videos and i swear, all their hellos are different signs- im not sure whats going on. is there more than one way to sign it?

Been teaching my GF some sign language for her 3 deaf swimming child students. And someone actually complained she was signing to these kids. Not they where the incorrect signs just she was signing. Just goes to show ignorance of some people.
