Hello! I'm a mom and this is my daughters first time playing rugby so I'm just doing some studying. My nephew plays pro football so I try not to compare. My daughter is a bit on the small size so I tell her to always be aware of her surroundings. I would think of that move of being a shake move. That seems like something that would be hard to teach but I get the concept. Thanks for the video.

A NZ touch rugby guy by the name of Remus Gentles created that step over 20 years ago. Benji Marshall, Shaun Johnson and QC all do slight variances of it but Shaun and Benji Illustrate it best as you're supposed to be able use it step in either direction depending on which way the defender goes. Shaun Johnson(and Benji in his prime) has the most successful step because of his acceleration and speed over a 100M. How often do you see QC step someone and then run more than 20M before getting mowed down.

It's a hop a fraction before planting the stepping foot. During the hop phase Cooper assesses the defender's weight distribution, and targets the weaker shoulder. Also, the x0.25 speed on youtube is awesome.

+John Smith I don't speak for everyone obviously. But from I've seen its not they don't respect the players themselves, we all respect each other we all work hard, we all sweat, and we all feel pain. Its the game itself that not every player respects, like how rugby union doesn't like rugby league. Thats how most football players are they respect rugby players, but they don't as much hate rugby but they don't understand it and don't bother to learn how because their just uninterested, thus meaning they don't respect it as much in a way. They say its a tough game and it looks fun to play, but they themselves won't play it or watch it or learn it. They rather play football then rugby

Spot on with the hip twist. If both you and the defender are coming together at an average or slow pace then you'd want to land both feet a lil wider. That last step you did would get past someone stagnant or moving at a fast pace.

I love watching this, I'm a safety for a British based American football team (Tamworth Phoenix). I've been fooled by many fast steps and as embarrassing as it is I'm always so impressed at the smoothness and speed.... Saying that... The key to stopping the step is watch the hips. The feet go everywhere but let's say you watch his left hip. It hardly moves unimtil he's makes his final step.

Hey Jacob I really appreciate you making these videos. I have always been studying and analysing steps in rugby.. And I feel the rugby world needs more interest in breaking down these 'moves' as opposed to thinking that one either has it or not. Unlike football/ soccer, basketball etc where there are plenty of tutorial to learn from, there are only a handful of tutorials on rugby stepping. Whats more frustrating is that even in the NFL such moves or jukes as the americans call them have been broken down to a science. I'm sure with proper interest, Quade Coopers step, Shane Williams evasion techniques or even Serevi and William Ryder's goose steps can be broken down into a science allowing for the sport to evolve.

forgot to mention, do that scissor thing, give you lots of disadvantages. first of, you kill too much of your own momentum. I would say it firstly you do it for too long. secondly because you do that small jump later which done to kill some momentum for easier direction change. The second issue with it is you run the risk of tripping yourself. You going too fast and it easy for you to trip with that scissor weird move. You don't need to do that wiper leg while on the air. Still, it kill your momentum on the air. Your small direction change I think would fit better for the 360° sidestep which I usually do since you going fast but maybe a bit too much cause you might trip yourself. Lots of experience watching people do the same mistake and paid the price.

Jacob McDonald Fitness Oh NOOOO really SR is dying ? Because rugby seems to be really strong around the globe if you look at the attendance at Top 14, or Super League, Pro 12 & Premiership - they all have healthy looking bottom lines. I have always wondered about those huge South African stadiums that are about 70% empty....I like also Derek Minnie that plays for the Lions in SA. I like the Crusaders too....don't they play down at Christchurch ? In the the ITA Cup I usually root for Southland....especially if Jamie MacIntosh is playing for them.

But i love the fact that you're trying to spread rugby. Its a truly awesome sport, and i wish football and players got along and played together because there the same. Just some slight tweaks to the game but its all the same. And i actually want to play rugby, just haven't gotten around any people to play with and most people don't even know what it is or how to play it

Hey brother thanks for your comments! Really interesting to hear the thoughts of NFL players and what they think of the game of rugby. It really is a great game.. No pads, no helmet, no running out of play when you don't wanna be hit.. I fucking love it haha. Try it out man! Even try out a game of rugby sevens to start. I know rugby sevens is gaining traction over there. About the defense question, I'm going to be bringing out a vide on how to defend and how to tackle. Basic principles remain, look at the opponenets hips, stay on the balls of your feet, don't get caught flat footed etc. Look out or it brah! Good luck

+Jacob McDonald No problem man. It is its awesome, i want to play it more and more everytime i watch. Football is my first love always will be, but i get the same itch to want to try rugby just like i want to play football, its just so awesome to me. Yeah y'all fields are way bigger there's no running away from contact, so even more so than in football if you don't like contact you definitely can't play rugby there is no running away you'll get dead tired before you make the sideline and theres about 5 people there waiting for you because theres more people than in football and there all over the place. Thats why people say rugby players are so tough there is no running from contact everybody gets hit and i love it i hate when people try to run from it. Yeah sevens is getting big, i don't always know the differences but there is one haha. But i also even if i started off with that i want to play regular rugby and one day probably try to compete for a world cup with team usa. And go against there world powers in New zealand and Australia and South Africa, just like football it makes me get big dreams like that haha its that awesome. The idea to play an awsome sport but also on a world stage and play the world and not just the U.S is awesome to me. Football is going to get there one day because their taking the pads off and i want to do that to, but i also want to do rugby. And thats exactly true when you have the fundamentals on defense its hard to get juked, the opposition also has to try much harder when facing someone fundamentally sound. And thanks man hopefully one day I'll get to play haha
