I was shocked when you said frame was 3/16". Harmon Garage shortened his one ton and his frame was 1/4", I replaced the rails from the back of the the cab to the rear bumper on my F350 cab and chassis and they were 1/4". I wonder if dually trucks have thicker frames as Harmons was a dually and mine is too. Regardless, you did a great job and who doesn't love a square body being kept alive. Great vid.

@@Offroadfarm1 I have a 2005 dodge tab 1500 4x4 quad cab. I'm thinking about taking a foot off the frame and shortening the bed to 5'4" Any advice you have, I'd appreciate it.

Why not relocate the spring hangers forward then take off the back end

It all depends on the shape of your frame. If my frame was straight than I could and would have just done that. But since my frame had an arch in it for the axle I couldn't easily do it that way. When I measured, moving the hangers forward would have left my rear hanger in the arch for the axle. I could have made a drop down section to mount that hanger on but i felt it was just easier cut and weld like I did. Thanks for watching

I thought you're supposed to jog the seam and not do a straight cut.

In a perfect world yes. I wanted to get as much length cut out as I could, so I did a straight cut. Thanks for watching

Not true, we cut and stretch semi truck frames for customers and we do Z, L and straight cuts. There is no strength difference, but we use a section of frame inside the original frame, creating a double frame. I've done straight cut and weld on many one ton trucks and use a second piece of frame and have never had a frame failure. Our customers haul 40 tons a hundred thousand miles a year with no failure. Honestly, L and Z cuts are a pain in the ass if you don't get every cut perfect.

Can you shorten the length of a car frame the same way?

  • @Offroadfarm1

If the car has a frame then yes. But keep in mind it will also change the position of any body mounts. You will either have to move those mounts or shorten the body of the car.

I'm certainly not an expert in that area, but I would look strongly at a Miller generator/welder. Two of the farms I work on have them and while they don't get used a lot, they always start up and run well when we need them. Thanks for watching

I need to convert a flat bed frame to a 8 foot bed on. 2003 silverado 2500hd duramax. You think its worth it? Too many headaches? Thanks Leo

Hard to say. Do you already have a bed? I would check to see if the mounting bolts will line up with your frame. If they do then it should be an easy job. If they don't then you are looking at more work to get everything to line up. Sorry I can't be of much help, I haven't done much work on the newer Chevys. Thanks for watching

If your wanting to do a LWB to SWB conversion Brothers Truck sells a conversion template (they are now owned by Holley) www.holley.com/products/suspension_and_chassis/truck_bed_conversions/parts/LTSC38773-75 Or you could measure one if you have access to one. I am not doing a conversion to SWB, I just wanted to cut as much length as possible out of my frame. Thanks for watching!

I'm not sure. I'll probably end up doing a flat bed, but I'm also thinking about doing a small stepside bed, like the bed offroad design but on their K30 convertible
