Howd you prep the frame for the weld? Beveled, small gap in the middle? I'm practicing on the scrap I cut out but having some trouble getting full penetration through the whole weld

Keep in mind I'm not a trained welder, but make sure to clean all the frame coating off where you will be welding on both sides of the frame. Yes I beveled the edges. I did not leave a gap, but I don't think a small gap would hurt your penetration. What kind of welder are you using? 110 or 220v? Can you turn up your amps or volts? Good luck on your project

@@Offroadfarm1 neither am I haha it's a 215 vulcan migmax have it on 220v using. 035 wire and 75/25 mix gas. beveled edges its either I'm burning holes if I turn it up and if I move faster it doesn't get full pen Not sure. Gotta get hang of It i guess I've welded plenty of stuff with success but this is a new machine and first time trying it out on heavier stuff mainly use it for body sheet metal

Surprisingly most of the frame is in really good shape. The only rust on the whole thing is on the rear spring hangers and back. The truck had 6.2 diesel in it and most of everything was covered in 30 years of oil and grime. I've pressure washed it with a hot water pressure washer 3 times now and some places still look like I haven't done anything. Also i don't have an easy way to lift the body off the frame and it would be a huge pain to grind and paint with cab still on
