A digital camera is just a fancy light-meter with a preview screen.

A digital ' camera ' is just an imaging computer. What we achieve with a digital ' camera ' is CGI and not photography in its classic form. A procession of Zeros and Ones fed by the ADC unit to the microprocessors to reconstruct a version of perceived reality. Even the dreaded term ' digital iso ' is not what it seems, as the sensitivity of the sensor to light of different wavelengths is a fixed value per wave length of light, and can not be altered.

then film photography is just chimestry then, why so mad at digital
I think some people are a bit too precious when it comes to 'the analogue process', especially when the first thing they do after producing a negative or print is to digitally scan it to stick on their 'social's. Using your Sony as a 'digital polaroid back' makes perfect sense . It's quick, practical and all-in-all better for the environment.

Honestly I was just hoping for the true rundown on how to meter it right. I don't have a tiny little mirrorless digital, I have a big heavy D7100, I don't have a car either so to need to carry around two cameras, 2-3 lenses, flash, stand, etc is a bit of a hassle. Plus I came here because I wanted to know how to actually properly meter for flash instead of just taking a bunch of pictures until something looks right and I basically got the exact same method id have done on digital regardless lol
As someone who isn't a professional photographer, and shoots film exclusively as a hobby, the idea that people would get upset that a digital camera is apart of your process seems so silly to me. Like, at the end of the day what we are making is art. I'd be like claiming a painting is less genuine because you sketched it in pencil first.

Been following the both of y’all for years in two different realms…keep living for the Lord and using your art passions to grow kingdom!
The comparison of utilizing a digital camera for this to how Polaroids were employed was so on point. That’s all it is, a “scrap” version of the shot and for decades that was an option. Using a digital camera in 2021 is just the equivalent.
Long weekend has to be the dopest fucking name for a brand I've heard in a long while.

Artificial lighting is something that has always been super intimidating to me, especially with film. Thanks Willem, for breaking it down and making it seem super simple! Can't wait for the Long Weekend bags too!
Quick tip - make sure one of the light stand legs is pointing straight out in front of the light - it's less likely to tip forward that way :)

I been wanting to shoot 35mm with a speed light and this is just a sign to do it. Thank you so much !
The rts iii is such a great camera to use, especially when paired with the Contax Zeiss glass, please keep shooting with this camera. Once people start catching on to the greatness of this combination I can sell my two bodies and all my lenses and finally buy my first house

Willem! Brining back some educational videos is so awesome, you're a great teacher. The photos with that simple diffused light and a 35mm are amazing! Using digital to check the balance of natural and flash lighting make complete sense to me, especially in an outdoor environment like that where the light is constantly changing. As always, I'm looking forward to the next in this series. (I'm also kind of a bag and backpack collector, so excited to learn about your venture together into that, too). Cheers! ✌️

dude this video is seriously so classy. so well shot. such good information. love it. pics are fuego TOO! *also so excited for Long Weekend!! love u
3:05 love the subtle Long Weekend plug 😁 that strap looks dope
I loved how simplistic this was. Made understanding strobes with film photography much easier for me.
love this type of educational videos!!! The way you explain technical stuff with such ease makes your content really easy to digest and non boring! Keep up man! Really great way to measure the light using a digital first =)))
Love that warm glow in the back of those shots! Currently also working on a project with similar surreal sunset and fill lighting, inspired by Magritte's Empire of Light.
That was an awesome video Willem!! I like it the pictures you showed us so much and I always love looking at photographers shooting people with strobea and see their approach to the photo shoot.
This was super helpful Willem. Thank you!
As someone who primarily shoots black and white, I've always loved your use of color. I've recently started doing portraits to try and make a little money off my hobby and these videos have been more inspiring than ever. Thanks Willem. also doing portraits finally allowed me to get the santa fe bag and i'm in love (couldnt get it sooner bc student)
Easily one of your best videos, this was such a pleasure to watch. Thank you
Thanks for this. I've been using my Ricoh GR as a light meter for my old Mamiya TLR C3, and now I don't feel so guilty about it. Love your results, great pics.
Awesome photos Willem! The background scene with the sunset really makes the shot, good work on location scouting.

Been so excited for you to test this strobe out!
Awesome !! Always great content that inspires me to go out and shoot !
Glad to hear another stepping stone in your path to greatness!!!
I find your videos so approachable and you make them with no ego attached. The sunset photos look amazing. I use my digital camera as a light meter for strobe work as well. I'd love to see a Willem digital episode!! I know the film heads would get sick but it'd be interesting to see your processes on a digital project, especially how you edit in post. You could even do a side by side film to digital comparison where you compare similar photos taken on digital and film cameras.
Holy heck that photo at 7:38 is incredible. Great work as always! ❤️
You are literally the reason I am starting my film photography journey, I love you work
How tf is this man focusing in the dark …😅 goated 🐐
It's the ₛₕₑₑₑₑₛₕ in the background for me
both you and Montell are amazing artists
Very simple but very nice explained! Looking forward to your next video. Thank you.
super helpful dude! I've been wanting to use flash for some of my work
Thanks so much for this video. I've been wanting to grab a portable strobe and this recommendation for the Vision 4 is ideal. Plus I love the idea of using a digital body to nail in settings to transfer to the film body. I'm absolutely all for these tutorial videos, they are great to watch but also I've learnt too!
Just Started experimenting shooting with flash and you post this, perfect timing
Great video and the portrait shots were fantastic. Nice glimpse of the book too! 🤙
Those portraits looked SOOO GOOOD man. Thanks for the info!
Ive been contemplating those Neewer heads since you first mentioned them a few weeks back, but I'm completely sold after these shots. The ones with the cityscape in the background are incredible!
Thank you so much for this video! This is exactly what I’ve been looking for- gonna give it a try!
I really like your idea of using the digital camera to determine the settings to dial in on film. I will definitely try it.
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this, I’ve been waiting for this video since i first subscribed 😭😭😭
New Willem vid 🙌
These are the nicest photos i've seen from u, looking so so nice!
This video made me subscribe-- love this so much
Those shots came out clean! ✨👏🏾
these are beautiful
probably should've watched this before shooting looool, thank you for your knowledge bro
Mans really does it all
This helped a lot thank you, I finally got my old nikon flash working on my FM2n!
Great work!
Dude I can't even tell you how surprised I was to see montell fish in this random photography video haha also I use the neewer vision 5 and there are literally no good videos showing how good neewer flashes are so thank you you definitely earned a sub from me
Well put amigo!
The end result is all that matters. I like your solution to checking exposure and how your lighting looks. Back in the day if they had had digital that is what all of the pros would have been using to check their lighting setup. Don't let today"s film hipsters tell you otherwise.
Very nice presentation, thank you; very enjoyable to see a “polite young man” doing good work…keep it up!
Great vid! Love to see the results of that beautiful camera!! Contax RTS and the Zeiss lens are something else. The Porsche camera
No joke, digital cameras are the next best light meter great video dude Loved the hint for "on the sunny side of the street", looking forward to owning a copy of the book
Thanks for sharing, this is very useful!!!
@7:11 that shot is incredible- kinda mind blowing
Love your videos
I needed this video thank you ! I’m looking into shooting flash with 35mm
Excellent video and fantastic images. Keep up the good work. :)
Neewer’s got some great products, I use their foldable reflector a lot when I do portraits. I think my favorite shot in this video is 6:21
favs working with favs AGAIN
honestly great tip on the whole using a digital camera to create somewhat of a test photo, ive been doing that for a while as well for whenever i decide to carry around multiple cameras. def cost efficient in the long run
Very helpful und insightful content. Thank you :)
I got the Vision 4 also, super solid strobe🤙🏽
Your truly inspirational bro

I found Montell’s music a couple years ago and it kind of blew me away seeing him in this video. The world is small.
You’re a legend
Using a digital camera to meter is so smart and you aren't alone! I go to school for filmmaking and learned that professional filmmakers who shoot on film sometimes double-check their exposure by using a digital camera. You still get the same desired look through using film, but what does that matter if your image isn't exposed properly? Great content as always, keep it up!!
I am an old timer, 40+ years in photography . You do not need expensive strobe lighting with 35 mm film or DSLRs. In the old times we used to prefer Tungsten lighting to strobes, for ease of use and much lower cost, albeit the use of a colour correction filter, or film balanced for 3400K lighting was required. One could learn to see what each light would do quite quickly. The strobes were the sole domain of Large Format studio product, still life or fashion photography where due to the inherent nature of very small apertures required and an almost mandatory use of 50~100 ASA transparency film, huge amount of light was required, and strobe lighting was the only way to get it. I still have a couple of my old Bowens Monoblock Gold and Silver units . They were hugely expensive, heavy and tricky to set up correctly, that is why we used Polaroid back on 4X5 or Hasselblads to check for lighting composition ( not for exposure as it has been incorrectly rumoured ). My advice is to keep on using continuous lighting and leave strobes alone.
with montellllll yes brother!
I’ll definitely be using my digital camera to help meter with my 35mm! This gave me confidence to just do it
I freaking love Montell
That 7:36 photo looked amazing, good job✌️
I could stare at the first fence pic at 7:12 for eternity. Absolutely amazing
No way!!! Two days ago, I tried strobes with 35mm for the first time. I didn't have a clue what I was doing and thought "maybe I should search this" and boom, here it is. Willem the mind reader.
Great video and love the results! 😍 I would love that you went more in depth with your thoughts when you where on the shot. What why did you position the flash the way you did etc. you wrapped it up very well at the end 🙏
For strobe metering outdoors, all you need to do is match apertures. Easy.
:)Monty and Willy doing their thing!!
The RTS is so good
nice work
AWESOME
6:25 just hits differenttttt 😍😍
Amazing job! Thank you so much. :-)
7:20 is fire
bro that shot at 7:12 is incredible
