Thank you! You explain and show the process very well.
I've never known the difference between High Pass, Unsharp Mask, Clarity and Sharpening. This method of sharpening seems more subtle that the others so I will keep it in mind when I want do do some selective, subtle sharpening. It certainly is a useful technique to learn. For what it's worth, I followed the steps in this tutorial in Affinity Photo - like a lot of people I don't have Photoshop, and with only a few minor differences it works just the same. Pretty much the same method in Affinity Photo, except you can add High Pass as a live filter layer rather than having to create a new pixel layer. Also Layer>Invert>Brush tool can be used without having to create a separate layer mask. This method is also great for bringing out detail in waterfalls. Use it quite a lot
