    I came across your video in the course of a search for tutorials on focus stacking in Photoshop applied to landscape photography. I do macro as well so proceeded to watch, stopping when you described setting up your Fuji for shooting a focus stack. My Nikon D850 has a “focus shift” function I’ve never bothered to explore, being in the habit predating the D850 of controlling focus stacks using qDslrDashboard running on a iPad connected to the camera via WiFi. I experimented with D850 “focus shift”, using a bouquet on the dining table as a subject. After preprocessing in Lightroom stack processing (15 shots) was done in Zerene Stacker. Both Pmax and Dmap results looked great, no retouching needed. The experiment was a success. I was surprised you didn’t run auto align on you image set prior to merge in Photoshop. Actually, I was surprised you used Photoshop to process a 30-exposure focus stack and it worked! This has been an evening of revelations. It’s been fun. Thanks!

    Thank you for this very clear instruction for focus stacking. You went slow enough for me to keep up with all the steps. Now I feel confident to give it a try. Great job!

    Thanks for this very informative video. I am just learning and trying to feel comfortable with PS. I have done very little focus stacking, but certainly can see the value in doing that. And that I know how to do this properly and what to expect in the process, I may try it more often.

    Just watched this and after using Lightroom for years I didn't know about the Auto Sync at all! I've used copy and paste settings or sync the old way once a photo was edited and copying to the others but this is in real time this saves steps right off the start!!!

    Great video Nicole. Down the road would you do a similar video for ON1 Photo Raw 2019? I know you cannot have as many frames but would like to see how it is done. I haven't as yet done focus stacking but this is something that interests me.

    Hi Stephen, I can definitely look into that. My initial tests with the focus stacking feature in ON1 were fairly dismal, but things may have improved since the initial release of that feature.

    Great explanation. How did you avoid focus breathing?

  • @nicolesy

    I haven't really noticed much of it ... sometimes there are spots that Photoshop can't quite find or blend well, and that could be partly from focus breathing. If I were to do this manually I would use my focus rails and move them instead of the actual focus on the lens. But doing it with my Fujifilm is easier ;)

    @@nicolesy I've got the 80mm macro and change focus with the lens. I find I get a lot of breathing when needing a lot of shots (40-50).

    When i stack my images a blurry frame apears around the edges of the final image. How do i deal with that?

  • @ItsOnlyFil
    @ItsOnlyFil3 жыл бұрын

    Blending like this did not work for me. Changing focus many times while being in macro, changes the size of the subject. This means that while focus is slowly pushed towards the back of the subject, at the same time the subject appears slightly zoomed out. This happens on every single shots. Photoshop does not zoom in on each photo while blending, so that they have all the same size. (I hope this is clear ;) !)

    ZERENE Stacker is MUCH easier to use and not that expensive; save yourself some time! (btw Helicon stacker is not as good IMHO), but either is HEAPS faster than using Photoshop.

    There will always be better/different options. I doubt someone would purchase Photoshop to ONLY focus stack their images, but if that's what they have, then it works well and does the job.
