How to sharpen carbide on a slow speed grinder. Part 2
How to use a slow speed grinder to sharpen carbide tooling. In this video I explore different aspects a slow speed grinding. I talk about some techniques I use whole, and the different types of diamond discs that help get this process going. I hope you enjoy.

I don’t think there is anybody out in the world more happy to have helped me out than the Build Something Cool guy. Thanks Build Something Cool guy.
Thanks for sharing, Dale.
It would be worth while to show how the sharpening on the tools works out on say 1018 cold rolled and maybe some 4140..

Normal carbide inserts have an edge radius, because that improves surface finish and durability for how they are used on industrial machines - at the cost of needed more power to make the cut. Deliberately changing the insert geometry to a dead sharp edge makes them much more useful on benchtop hobby machines, because that reduces the power needed to make the cut - at the cost of durability and surface finish. That's a great tradeoff for people with small lathes, especially since inserts can then be sharpened many times. (I use a slow speed wet grinder, so I don't have to be concerned with carbide grinding dust or the noise of a dust removal system.)

@@somebodyelse6673 I think by ''edge radius'' you mean nose radius. Not trying to be pedantic, because the actual cutting edge on many carbide inserts also has a slight radius, or a samll flat spot (''honed edge'' is what it's called I think). That not so sharp edge is also done for durability, but also increases the power and rigidity requirements. A dead sharp lapped edge on carbide with a smaller nose radius than on commercial inserts and slow feed can probably leave a great finish and be very durable. Watch Robin Renzetti's video on production work on manual lathe. He used brazed carbide to make all of 420 or so pieces for a job he was doing, and the tool held up for the entire run of parts.
Keep up the fight, Dale.
Lo mejor del video es el final y que le diga al público que con una instalación mucho más precaria se logra el mismo resultado. Dale es un tipo honesto, me recuerda al video del welding cart. Me encanta este canal.

Great video Dale This looks like a good addition to the shop
Grinding always comes out better when grinding with the wheel coming down because the work piece is being pushed down into the table Giving the work piece stability while you’re grinding. Really nice machine and great videos. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Awesome mate, I’ve learnt something again from you, I’m using carbide at the moment and wasn’t to sure how to go about sharpening until now, thank you very mate, much appreciated, Cheers Matty from Australia
Great job Dale, you make it look too easy!

Started sharpening carbide saws in the 70,s , went on to sharpen carbide tools later with diamond wheels. Need a cutter grinder and coolant to do accurately
well handy tool Dale, still figuring mine out! ATB from rainy Kent in England.
With our Sunnen sharpener they give you a spray to keep the dust down so you don't breath it in, but it does evaporate and the dust can become air-borne again if disturbed.
I use the diamond bladed saw blade sharpener from HF. Cuts a clean edge on all my carbide cutters and even the blades. That's a nice machine though!

Might think about adding a cool mist or some way to wash swarf away. Put one on mine and it made a world of difference both with cutting ability and wheel life. That's a very nice looking piece you made there. You make lots of good projects and I would watch much more if just a lil' less cloy, but hey everybody is different nothing wrong with that as long as it's not fake or forced.
Great video! Love the California safety warnings. Lol
Love the "NUT" voice-over correction!
Thanks for a Kicking practical video...Man you ROCK. I just bought a 320 grit diamond cup wheel. I guess it is going to be for hogging only. What speed should I run the 4" 320 grit diamond cup wheel. I hope to mount it to my lathe to use as a tool grinder I grind some crazy stuff by eyeball and would rather use more accurate tooling.
👍👍👍👍 glad I already watched part one , and dont live in California....
Intriguing process & a nifty idea toavoid big bucks for a commercial grinder. For the brazed carbide...how many sharpenings before the overhang of the carbide on the steel substrate is no more? How do you grind back the steel substrate w/o damaging the carbide - or - the carbide gouges the wheel(?) grinding the steel?
You do things I've never seen anyone do....
Great video. When are you going to make a video on the Deckel in the backgraound?

@@BuildSomthingCool Hi , I have been using 6" lapidary discs for a few years now. I always buy the cheapest ones. I use them on my home made variable speed wood turning lathe with a 6" face place to sharpen wood turning tools (mostly HSS, some high carbon steel, some PM steel and some carbide) regular high carbon steel wood working tools like chisels and plane irons etc and other tools inc carbide. I have yet to run into durability issues. But I dont sharpen all that much carbide, rather mostly HSS, with the exception of the 4" disc I use to sharpen carbide tipped table and chop saw blades. I have also bought the cheapest off shore Diamond hones ( + - 3x7" ) and cut a couple up to make paddle hones. I use those to touch up drill bits and also to sharpen cupped round 10--12 mm carbide inserts that I use for deep hollowing on the wood lathe. I do have a few pretty low quality videos showing what I am talking about. Link here: kzread.infofeatured

But I will try paint thinner on both wheels. If you find something better let me know. I only have a 600 grit wheel but I did purchase your 3000 grit wheel today. I'll let you know how this works out for me. Again, thanks Dale
DD, what is rotational speed that you qualify as slow? inches or feet per second? Since a lot of material isn't be removed, what HP motor would suffice?
@Steve_Just_Steve
5 жыл бұрын
I made mine from a lil' 40 VDC motor that is prob 1/4 hp and it has more than enough power. For a 6" wheel about 300 rpm is optimal, but you can get away with a little more if you use coolant/lube, which I recommend using regardless to knock down carbide dust and make the wheels last way longer. I use a cheap chinese mist coolant head with water soluble grinding coolant that works well.
I like the video except I wanted to see more detail of the handy little angle gauge you made. You blew through that pretty quick.

BTW- I'm one of those kats leaving SoCal in droves as ASAP!
you might want to wet grind your carbide it will make your disks last longer and cut the dust
If you use water for lube the diamond will last longer.

old dried silicone (one you use in kitchen, bathroom ,to seal things)works wonders on diamond stone and sandpaper.Old rubber soles of the shoes will work aswell.
I don't know why your lap disks are wearing out. Mine have been going strong for years. With diamond they still feel like day one. Mind you I have them glued down to their backing plate. The diamond doesn't wear really but it can be knocked off. Perhaps a flapping lap disk and vibration are the reason.
No that video was a fast forward video of how you built the grinder . First thing with those cheap carbide tools is chuck them in some solvent to get rid of the paint .
