After seeing so many videos of others using a file in a drill, as I shook my head I decided to make a video to set the record straight. #Chainsaws

Thanks for being brave enough to put this out there😂 I completely agree! 5:42 is not for the faint at heart!

when I started out with chainsaws, I tried to sharpen my chain with a diamond bit for a Dremel... it sort of worked, but once you get skilled with a file, you never go back. Filing is just the best way to go.

I still have not found anything that makes chain sharpening more convenient than the Stihl 2 in 1 sharpener. I love it!

Just got one a few weeks ago and had my first very successful sharpening. Nice

Use a 7/32 sharpening stone on a dremel. It works. Lol. Files don't work, but sharpening stones sure do. 👌

Yes, absolutely stones work. As do HSS and carbide burrs.

@bobe8888 The file on a drill thing is pretty silly, though. 😅 I like the stone burrs, but I ordered some diamond ones also. Found them 8 for like $6. My first ones were stone, but I'd like to try them both.

The issue with the stones is the fact they change shape and get smaller as they were down.✌️

I agree with your theory with this type of file. I Have very good Results using a drill. Because I use diamond grid round files and I use a bearing or a home made tool to hold the file at the other end. I do not know how to include pictures.....

The diamond impregnated files will work in any direction, I mentioned that in the video.

I was hoping someone would put up a video refuting all those videos out there promoting using a drill (rotary tool) to sharpen chains. Even I knew enough not to fall for that half-baked idea haha! Nice video, Andre!

I use to use a 12v rotary tool that took little stone bits. I used it because i had a problem with my hands going to sleep while trying to file a chain. The rotary tool was a great way to wreck a chain. Thankfully the chiropractor helped to fix the issues with my hands. I now quite enjoy filling my chains!

They can work, but these stones don't hold the correct diameter for very long.

what if you put the drill in reverse as some of the video's suggest you should do to sharpen?

Funny how some fear the file and will try all kinds of crazy to get away from it when it would have been easier to just learn to hand file . That being said , can't say I wouldn't have tried this in my youth LOL!!!

Great demo! I did using the drill to file and it didn't work. Probably change the title so ppl know the truth. So even the metal rotary sharpener are no good?
@Andyshine77

No the hardened steel or carbide rotary bits will work if you have the right size. The stones don't because they rapidly change diameter as they were down.

25 strokes, I counted! IF you were to do the same 25 strokes with the same pressure while using the drill...I believe you would have gotten similar results with less wear on the file. A Sawzall would be more appropriate.
