How to shape Memory Metal | Nitinol wire experiments | dArtofScience

Lets see how to shape memory metal and nitional wire experiments
This is not a DIY but a demo which shows you every step.
Steps to shape memory metal
1. A line drawing of the required shape is made
2. A jig for the required shape is made so that the wire can be held tightly in the shape while being heated, otherwise it snaps out
3. The assembly is heated till the whole wire has a dull red glow
4. Then it is quenched in cold water
5. The wire is removed from the jig and the extra bits are cut off
6. The wire is gently twisted out of shape and thrown in hot water

Could you braid this into a rope, then take the rope and make a bigger spring? Get more lifting power?

Great Video, what temperature is needed to break the old memory structure and build a new one? How often can you bend/redo before the litinol wire breaks? Thank you 😉

Temperature required was about 300 degrees to get a new shape. I think. It's been a long time since we did this
