Thank you so much for this video. I reconstructed my sons baby blanket that his grandma made for his new baby. I had to replace the satin binding with a new one. Because the fabric is 40 years old , I was afraid to to put the binding on just because the material was so fragile. Your instructions made it easy and the blanket has new life.

Fraying on the satin binding is real. In trying to remedy after the fact I used fraying sealant. Wish I’d used at start. Love your instructions though.

This is a great tutorial, however I think the audio isn't in sync with the video. The audio ended around 7:52, but the video itself ended around 8:30. Not sure if it is just my side that's experiencing this or not. Can't wait to try this for my friend's newborn!

What size clip are you using? I've made a few Minky blankets and unless the blanket was very small, the weight of the fabric always caused problems for me. I'm going to try your technique, which I'm sure will give me a much better looking blanket. I want to use the same clip you're using, but I can't decide if it is a 2-inch clip or a 3-inch clip. Can you let me know? Thanks!

Love this video, but why did you finish the binding on a long edge and not on the corner? If you're going to zigzag all the corners, why not finish on a corner?

Would you really like to struggle with that slippery stuff in a corner? Believe me, my first attempt I tried it and did I get myself in a pickle, hahaha, so tried the professors way and hey presto, looks great!!!

I'd apply fray check to the edge after cutting it. You can find it in the notions department

hi when I opened my satin binding mine does not have a wider edge on the back the front and back is even. what do I do now? will it work out?

mine doesn't either. The one that Joann's sells does have the longer side but I received a gifted one from Hobby Lobby and it's completely even. I sewed one blanket for my daughter and had an awful time. I kept missing the back side and had to stitch so high on the front that it left an ugly edge. I'm think of repressing the entire piece of satin to give it a shorter and longer side unless someone can provide an alternative?

Love the video. How would you attach more binding? I'm 4 inches short on blanket so had to open new package.

its the same technique as you do for when you connect the two end pieces at the end. You're basically sewing the ends on a bias to make the seam less noticeable.

hmmm...it could be the satin fabric. try placing a piece of tissue paper on top and see if that makes it better. Afterwards, you can rip off the tissue paper. kind of a pain but it sometimes makes sewing on satin easier.

You could try lessening the pressure foot tension. Try on scrap fabric to get the right pressure. Don’t forget to reset it when you are finished.

I am just wondering why my satin binding is slightly rippled and when I got to my first corner it looks wonky wondering what to do now?

hmmm....maybe it got slightly stretched when you were stitching it. That's usually what rippling means. :(

how do you get the binding on the blind side to meet the front and look right with a zigzag stitch i have my machine set for width at a 6 and it still doesn't line up to look right i noticed you really didn't address this problem and how to line it up correctly? please help

This is why the wider side goes to the back because it's so hard to get it to line up perfectly. Even on mine, the stitches don't always go on the perfect edge of the back fabric. As long as it looks good and both sides are getting caught in the stitches then you're doing well.

This was a fabulous and to the point tutorial, thank you so much Professor! I'm attempting to do this for a doll house baby blanket. So my blanket is much smaller, 10x8in, and I had to cut the satin binding in half (from 2" down to 1" so it wouldn't look so big compared to the size of the blanket). Since I cut the binding in half, I'm noticing that one side is not wider than the other, as is with the store bought 2" binding. Should I cut it so that one side is slightly wider than the other? I'm using a walking foot, clips and very minky fabric. As I'm doing the zig zag stitch, I keep running into trouble with the minky fabric pulling itself out of the binding bit by bit as the machine goes along. I keep needing to lift the presser foot and re-position everything so that the next time the needle comes down it will actually grab the satin. This is even with lots of clips holding things in place. Any suggestions? Thanks again!

minky is just a tricky fabric to work with and you just have to take your time unfortunately. I wouldn't cut the binding any more, just try to sew far enough away from the edge that you're catching both sides. good luck!

What type of thread is the best to use for this....poly, all-purpose or cotton? I have Aurifil cotton but I'm not sure if that is the best for sewing with minky which is 100% polyester.?

no, in that case it doesn't matter which side of the binding goes on which side of the blanket. I'd just leave it and not re-iron it

Why don't you want to start the binding on the corner. It would look better. Then on the side. Is there a reason

so I thought this looked easy enough any you seemed to explain it very well. I have never used satin binding before and it was a disaster. I started on the bottom and it went well enough but when I went to do the side my binding ended up not going on smooth at all. It kept bunching up. I have no idea what I am doing wrong except wasting a lot of material. Any insight would be helpful.

I know this is a 2-year old comment, but it seems like your problem might have been because of your stitch tension being too tight and your stitch length too long (for example, when we want to sew ruffles, we adjust the stitch tension and length to be as long and as tight as possible). Before I sew with any type of new fabric, I always do a test run before I begin actually sewing on my final product to see what I need to adjust on my machine. Just a helpful rule of thumb for you!

My machine is old old old. It doesn’t have a zigzag stitch. Will I still be able to do a satin edge?

as long as the curve isn't too extreme and more of a gradual curve, you can just ease the blanket binding around it without any fancy folding. You might have to add a fold though if you find you can't do it without wrinkling.

Where do we find the binding clips? They look like hair clips.....can I just use hair clips?

yes, you can definitely use regular hair clips. The "binding" clips are usually in the quilting notions section of the fabric store but, honestly, buy the hair clips. they're usually cheaper.

you have to sew another binding strip on the end. It's the same as sewing bias tape together

Just finished the blanket and unfortunately, although the instructions were so clear, I managed to miss some zizag on the opposite side. :(

I haven’t got the confidence to do that my binding never looks right on the others side ( the blind side )

Look at Stitch in the Ditch...very hard to get it wrong..use clips though.

If you were using a faux fur would you suggest using this same method or something else?

You can use this same method. Depending on how long the fur is though, you might want to trim it in the area which will be covered by the binding so it won't be as bulky. the only other issue...some faux fur has an obvious wrong side with no fur which might look kind of weird for a blanket, so you might want to have something on the wrong side to make it look nice. If that's the case, you might want to baste them together, wrong side to wrong side so it makes it easier to put on the binding. good luck! :)

they carry it in a variety of colors. i know I've seen it in baby pink but I'm not sure about other shades.

yes, definitely, but I would sew them on the bias like I do when I sew the ends together in the video. Just like with bias tape.
