    Quick tip: you can also use small sections of music wire (or aircraft style safety wire) in the appropriate diameter to measure the gap. A fairly common steel wire size: .020” = 0.5 mm You can usually find this in the model airplane (or train) section of your LHS.

    You know what works even better than chopped up feeler gauges……..solid core copper wire. Find the appropriate wire gauge size that matches the desired idle gap and use that. Much easier. 👍🏽

    I use a number drill ( bit ) . The double idle also is a " thing " on most things carburetored ( especially motorcycles ) for which I'm now very grateful having just purchased a nitro . Thanks very much for that ; but now I'll have to watch the long version ...

    Great video JQ makes a lot of sense and one less thing to have to adjust to get a good tune, would the idle gap be the same on a .32 engine or slightly larger?

    @@nikolajc7617 Hi, you need to know idle gap for your specific engine! JQ gives you the idle gap for the o.s to set it perfectly. Since tuning my engine this way. I have gained power, run time and had no issues. 👍

    The video is all about tuning o.s engines so if you own a o.s you got the idle gap, if you don't own a o.s then find the idle gap then you know. My Truggy is fast as heck and 10 minute pit stops is no problem.

    24awg is 0.51mm 25awg is .455 but hard to find might find in small motor windings but is probably coated

    @@keithbates8482 yes, but you don't reduce the idle screw. You set it to a known idle gap. And then you adjust the LSN for the right idle RPM.

    so these little carbs don't have a dedicated (separate) idle circuit like a 2 stroke outboard or a 2 stroke jet ski motor i'm assuming since they are so tiny. interesting! any idea what the idle air gap should be for a dynamite .21 motor? the manual just says the idle air screw should be just in from flush on the needle body. why do you need to measure it if you can just tune it ... or will it make it too difficult to adjust when running?

    Looking 4ward to doing this to my flashpoint engine haven't even broken it in yet just need to dremmel the feeler gauge bits. No one makes ones for rc yet ??

    Ok my 28.8 idle gap is supposed to be 0.6mm but I just check and I am way under could this effect the tune or is this one of those less is more lol.

    Hi i have a challenge with my hpi mt2 with aG3 nitro engine. I have measured the gap and my idle gap is as per manual. High speed and low speed needle is flush with carb engine stars fine but as soon as i apply break or keep it on the ground it shuts off. What should I do? Please help

    Just a quick question. I have a hpi bullet and a hyper 7, both manufacturers state 1mm idle gap, are they being over generous? Would i get better results using 0.5mm gap as you suggest for the os carbs?

    I have been trying to get hang of this. The manual for my Losi 8ight Buggy states that the idle gap is 1/16" to 3/16" (1.57mm to 4.78mm). That seems huge compared the 0.5mm to 0.7mm you mention lol. If the idle gap is also set too large, will that cause the car to start rolling on its own? Thanks again for these helpful videos 😎👍

    Yes, that would cause it to roll on its own. Also, it is worth noting that a failing clutch spring will also cause the car to walk on its own

    I’m new to nitro engines and I just bought a Losi 8ight t rtr model. In the owners manual it shows a huge idle gap. It’s the dynamite .28 engine and can you have a smaller idle gap than what the manual says to run. I’ve watched this video a bunch and I still don’t have an ear for the tuning so I’m not sure on what it is supposed to sound like at a good one stage idle. Thank you a bunch.

    I am a little confused JQ and am hoping you can answer a question. Should you always set the idle gap without the venturi (sorry I think I spelled that wrong) in the carb intake or set it with the venturi in? Because I have noticed that when you set it without and put the venturi in, it kind of disappears

    Do you know what the idle gap should be on a ke15sp koyosho engine? I just got this nitro and am new to this. I watched your video and tried to fine tune after the break in. After getting it close. Engine stalled. Wouldn’t start. I thought my tune was off , soooooo I messed with all the settings because it wouldn’t run. Ugh it was a unexpected bad glow plug. So now I’m nowhere near where I should be. There are no factory settings that I can find to get me close.

    Start from rich side, you don't need factory settings. Set idle gap to 0.5 to start.

    I have a question, there are some people ( on road racers) who want to know about the condition (has carbon on it) of the glow plug and how it effect the tune of the engine?

    I think a damaged glow plug will make the engine run rich, so if you adjust the engine to run right, and then change to a new glow plug, the engine will run lean with the new glow plug.

    Big thing to remember here is if your servo throttle end point isn’t set correctly a lot of this is useless

    @@invisiblespeedrc do you have any tips on tuning that engine? It’s always been difficult. It has a hanging idle like it won’t come off the pipe for 20-30 seconds when trying to get down to idle. At this point I think it needs a full carb reset.

    They are all nitro engines. Of course it applies. The only difference is the best idle gap to run. And that can be found through iteration, as explained, and showed in the full version of the video.
