How to set up your tarp when hammock camping featuring: UGQ Winterdream 12

Комедия

Having the ability to set up your tarp in multiple configurations allows you to change up your shelter on the fly. In this video, we'll go over a few of the setups that I like to use out on the trail. Also, I'll discuss some of the features of the tarp that we're using: the UGQ Winterdream 12.

    Excellent video! Quite the complete explanation of everything. I set up my Warbonnet Super Fly in a very similar manner. Differences: I use plastic toggles on both ends of my continuous ridgeline so I can make the 'Y' for my hammock suspension to pass through. And I use NamaClaws rather than Prusiks to attach the tarp to ridgeline. I've never considered using my hiking poles over the top for pole mods - an interesting idea that I will have to try. Thanks for making the video and sharing your set-up.

    I refer to this video from time to time. It's THAT good. I have the 13' UGQ Winter Dream. However, I just ordered an 11' Winter Dream. 2 Reasons for going smaller size. There is only 1 real drawback on the 13'; the tarp rides a little higher above the hammock (Chameleon Wide) due to the 13' spread. Sometimes, that is NOT a drawback as it may be more favorable weather and it's nice to have it higher up able to move around easier around the hammock under the tarp. It's also nice to have all of that real estate underneath the tarp to keep dry. BUT when there is wind, I can't really lower it much due to my hammock suspension keeping the tarp higher, so there is more wind convection under the tarp. My idea behind the 11' version, is to get it lower and closer to the hammock and the sides getting closer to the ground. PLUS, I just bought the Teto Hammock Stand. And it isn't large enough for my 13' tarp.

  • @TripleNickelOutdoors

    @TripleNickelOutdoors

    I see what you’re saying about the longer tarp and the suspension. That’s why 12’ is a pretty standard length for 11’ hammocks. You may find that the 11’ tarp may not be long enough for adequate coverage of your hammock. Keep experimenting with different pitches and angles! Thanks for the comment! Nick

    @troyanderson8879

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Tethysmeer I checked on the 11' size to make sure it would fit over the 11' hammock. It clears it by about 10" ... I just looked up the specs on your hammock. It's 10' 10" long... at least the fabric is that long. I expect that the 11' will barely clear it if it's fully stretched out. if you allow sag in the hammock (if there is a ridge line in the hammock), then it will for sure fit an 11'. You can call Paul at UGQ and verify before purchasing.

Someone posted a video of how UGQ made him a 13' tarp that had longer walls so that they went down to the ground even though the tarp was hanging high above the hammock. It was almost a "hammock hot tent". All he had to do was add a stove jack and stove... :) Anyway, Not sure what you're going for, but you can customize to get what you want. cool video, we have almost identical setups, grey wd12, I use 1.75mm grey lash it for everything: ridgeline, cont loops, soft shackles, guylines, panel pull lines, tensioners.. I swapped what i had going for my panel pull lines for what you have going for yours with just the line and prusik, i like your way better lol, I'm using a loop alien where you have your wasp.. i also have the dutch hooks spliced onto 6" line with fixed eye that's larks headed onto the ring on tarp ridgeline going to cont loops that are klemheist knots (tarp tensioners).. and i too have the hookworms and the shock cord mitten hook door closures, i have little 2" shock cord loops on my tarp guy outs i seen yours were bigger.. but that's cool.. i don't know if you had any knots in any of your lines and i don't know if you know, but knots can weaken a ropes strength by up 50% or more and tests have shown ropes usually break at the knot, kind of maybe looked like you had couple knots on your ridgeline or tensioners.. but heres couple of ideas for you too since i got a couple from you lol.. my panel pull lines are 6ft long, that way when I'm not using trekking poles on ridgeline i can still pull out the panels by using the trekking poles as you would in porch mode so, on one side both panel pull lines to one trekking pole, that's standing up in the ground, pulled and staked to ground, but depending on how tall things are you may get a better lift on your pull when poles are used on the ridgeline.. in porch mode i don't know if you have done it seen it or ever thought of it but you can undo your doors from each other and stake those to the ground as well off the sides giving you a little side coverage too.. not much but a little lol, even a slant so rain runs off.. and finally, you could take a small 5x7 tarp or something, i have a small outad tarp from amazon 5x7 roughly that i use.. but you can connect the tarp eyelets to panel pulls via soft shackle or carabiner or other personal preference and trekking pole the opposite end of the tarp out to the ground, off the side of your tarp, so you don't have to put your tarp into porch mode and still get a little covered porch to sit under, i use helinox chair zero, but right on man, cool stuff...later

    Cory T. Thanks for all the points you hit on Cory. I love hearing how other people have their gear set up! Most of my lines are spliced but i do use a marlin spike hitch to attach the guylines to the stake. I know that using knots does derate the overall strength of the line being used, but I don’t think that the zing it/lash it used on a tarp would be subjected to that amount of force. But who knows!! Lol I thought about changing my ridgeline from 2.2mm to 1.75mm lash it but I had the 2.2 lying around so that’s what I stayed with. I do wish it was all color coordinated though! Haha For the panel pulls... I keep some extra line in my pack just in case (2 - 6 foot lines). I max out on the lengths of the panel pulls and put them together then larks head one of the extra six foot lines to both of them, then run the extra line to the ground. ... I just bought a Chair Zero the other day!! Can’t wait to use it!! Thanks for all the tips and sharing your setup! ✌️

Use the link below to calculate the height your hammock suspension should be to try and get that perfect hang: theultimatehang.com/wp-content/themes/hueman-child/hammock-calc.php As for the tarp, the weather will be the biggest factor on how high or low you set it. If the weather is bad, pitch it low to the hammock to try and get as much coverage as possible. If the weather is nice you might not even need it!! Hope this helps!! Nick

    How did you remove the double rings on the tie outs? I also want to permanently attach shock cord to the tie out points instead.

    They’re attached like a key ring. Easy to take off. I’ve been pleased with using my shock cord tie outs!

    @@TripleNickelOutdoors okay thank you. Looks like it tied and held knots well? I was afraid it wouldnt. All i have is 550 paracord, will that work instead of zing it?

  • @TripleNickelOutdoors

    @TripleNickelOutdoors

    @Darcy Bettridge it’ll work but it’s much less desirable. Paracord has the tendency to stretch a lot more, especially when wet.

    Not sure where you live, but those little Shepard hooks would not fly in Colorado, your tarp would be flapping in the breeze.

    If you are 50 degrees FH, then this is OK. Really need to put tarp to the ground to avoid cold convection…..

    If I have to seam seam seal it, it’s not worth purchasing. I go to a company like Hammock Gear that does it as part of the purchase.

    You’re missing out on some quality gear then. Hammock gear is great, I have their DCF tarp, but you should still give tarps like the Winterdream and the Superfly a go. Even if you have to seam seal them! Thanks for the comment. Nick
