How to set up your Monstera for success
Getting your Monstera Deliciosa from a big box store is a great idea. However these plants are not always arranged in a way that will make its new growth come out the way you expect. You can take a top cutting of your plant, start over and arrange your cuttings to make the perfect plant.

I have a messy monstera as well. But i kinda like the natural "jungle" look. It allows the plant to fill in an open space between my floor lamp and entertainment stand. Meanwhile my other monstera has a single stem with the pole supporting the back. It's growing well. But it is also becoming top heavy... Where as my "messy" monstera has no issues of toppling over
Now THIS was some useful plant content! Not “here are ten over-priced plants you’ll never afford, loser” or “here are two leaves on a wet stick that I bought on Etsy isn’t it amaaaaazing?”. I really appreciate that you scripted yourself and don’t have any verbal clutter. Well-done!

I personally prefer starting from a starter plant. It's true that it till take you several years to get to the "normal" size you see in the store, but it really feels like your own kid. More importantly, you learn a lot about your plant through the process.

I bought a plant like this at a nursery. Came home watered it down to remove all dirt and so that I could see the roots. Cut it into 2 plants. Planted them seperatly with bamboo pole. They are doing great!

well maybe because anyone thinking about it will just tie in the stem and let the leaves to go towards the light. I have grown1000's of Cheese plants and I have never once though, 'oh, that's the back of the plant', because the leaves will grow towards the light and that makes that the 'front' of the plant no matter which way the stem is pointing. After all what are you looking at? Leaves or stem? Leaves, obviously. Just don't tie in the leaves as well, why would someone do that?
Hm so my anxiety is growing...I'm like the textbook example of what's wrong with my Monstera - and I had no idea...

Right? I’ll never look at them the same way again. And of course, most of mine are placed in their pots in a way that doesn’t make great use of the space for future growth. Future me hates present me 😂 I am seriously grateful though to understand it all clearly now. *I didn’t take the time to think out their growth pattern when I was repotting before.

You are THE MOST informative but clear plant lover on here. Well done x
Love your videos! The dry comedy and science based advice for taking care of the plants is incredible.
This was so helpful! Other videos talk about staking but don't go into detail like you did. I feel like I now know where to start to get my monstera under control. Thank you!
This is such a great video! Informative and detailed without being excessive, and never patronising. Thank you!
So excited to do this with my bosses giant office plant! We’ve had it in the office just growing along leggy and along the floor for two years and I’m finally propagating cuttings now to re plant and prop up right! Thank you so much!
Excellent advice I honestly don’t think I have seen anyone else tell people this but it’s so important to know with many climbers !
Just found the channel and I really appreciate the short videos. Very precise, exactly what the title says and no "fill up to 10 minutes time-waste". Thank you! =)
I bought a tiny monstera for $8 at the grocery store! She was looking a bit floppy and unhealthy, and all I've done is put her in my nice window, and she is really thriving. Because she is small she doesn't need a pole yet and I turn her every so often. I've gotten one leaf since she's been here and another one is coming in. I'm really looking forward to when she is massive! What a great video!

Got my 1st monstera yesterday. Kind of shocked about some plants having a front and a back. Never thought about it. Perfect timing to see this! After buying my first monstera yesterday from big box on clearance with some yellow lower leaves, I immediately unpotted and found it was 4 plants, removed the crappy soil, and I'm ready for the next step. On to watch some more of your videos:)

Wow! I had no idea. Yep, I am one that bought at big box store and I think my plant has 4 different stems and going every which way. Summer project coming my way. Thank you!
Something to consider is that after some time the plants' backs will turn away from the light source (if the light is coming mainly from one direction), making it easier to tie them all together. Even if the lower portions are all facing their own directions, their top portions will eventually sync after some growth.

I'm still a lil confused. Is it safe to break up the roots of an existing monstera or is taking a cutting the ONLY way? Ideally I'd like to split my shop bought monsteras into separate pots and carry on as is. They've got pretty big leaves already and I'm not in love with the idea of starting fresh.
@KillThisPlant
Жыл бұрын
Splitting up your roots is absolutely an option. However, especially if you have an established plant, splitting up the roots without damaging them can sometimes take an extremely long time. I don't personally seperate roots and I have a hard time suggesting it to others because -it could take a hours depending on the plant -you have to have a certain level of experience to know how much force you can use when seperating roots (what's an acceptable amount damage)

So grateful that I found this. I have a Monstera that has tripled in size in just over a year. And though I am a landscape architect, I don't work with Momsteras much because I'm in the desert.
