How To Set up A Weight Distribution Hitch

In this video we show you how to properly set up and use your weight distribution hitch. The goal of using a weight distribution hitch is to keep the trailer and the vehicle it's attached to, as level as possible by distributing the tongue weight of the trailer across the vehicles frame. Make sure your weight distribution hitch is properly set up to ensure that you have a safe and efficient towing setup.

Thank you for this video. My wife and I have been struggling with how to get the proper amount of chain length on the weight distribution part of the trailer. Your tip about lifting up the trailer with the jack BEFORE installing the chain was very helpful. Thank you.

Great job! I have a hitch just like that and am getting ready to set it up for a different vehicle. While I’ve used it on several different trailers that were the same height, I’ve never set it up on a new tow vehicle with a much different height. I think I can flip it over and use it again. I appreciate the tips.

Need a 2" ball with a shank for 19" truck receiver to 14" trailer coupler (600 LBS). Seems the bars hanging below frames may be kind of low to the ground ...

I just knew the details i need would be missing. I have a 99 Eddie Bauer explorer with its stock tow package which is not a hitch insert setup, the ball is part of the bumper but bumper is part of frame . What do i do?

You used a level to level the trailer prior to starting. I'm guessing that if you have to set up in a location that has a slight slope, you'll have to measure the frame on both ends to be level?

Nice job But I caught one mistake, min 2:15 at least on my husky directions it says to but both cone washers on the upper bolt one on each side. Don't want the ball pulling back in that adjustment channel.

Is it true that the tension bars should be even/parrallel with the frame once connected? (should not be pointing upwards or downwards, generally speaking.)

Weight distribution hitches can cause the tongue to be overloaded and collapse . I will not use one again . Instead I will use Airbags or an overload spring.

Warning to RV owners ; Your trailer frame is very likely to break under normal usage . I suggest you inspect your frame in the vicinity 4 ft in front of the first Axle and 4 ft behind the last axle as well as the spring shackle welds for cracks . These cracks are caused by sharp turns backing into spots or pulling out of places. All that popping you hear is your frame flexing and breaking. 5th wheel owners the same thing but the transition from Goose to the main part of the trailer breaks . Any deformation or opening of cracks , buckling crushing of the area of the pinbok indicates broken frame members and an immediate repair before major damage occurs .

Having level ground / pavement would be extremely hard to find, so using a level is useless!! Best to just measure from the ground to the frame at the front & rear and get those to measure the same. As for the truck, the bumpers are not the same, so those measurements are useless also! Need to use the lowest part of the body between the bumper & wheel well at the front and rear of the vehicle as measurement points instead.
