    Thanks for the great video. I just bought this hitch from HF (March 2021), I have had 4 weight distribution hitches over the years, all different brands and types. I didn't read the instructions, but what worked for me was to install the "end link" of the supplied chain, on the hook of the cantilevering tension bracket, and insert the supplied U-bolt through the correct chain link at the other end of the chain, and allow for the few extra links to hang off the bottom after tightening the U-bolt to the torsion beam. My chains were also too small to fit the hook into anything other than the end link, but the U-bolt diameter was able to slip through an inner link just fine.

    That is one way to do it Jeff. Since my load changes, I elected to do it this way so I could make changes on the fly and without having to break out tools. If your load stays the same, I see no reason not to go the direction you did. Take care, G.

    Hey brother- just installed this hitch on my expedition- got it with the coupon for around $160. Just a note to say thanks for the thorough post and advice- I watched and re-watched your setup and it went smooth. Pulls our 26ft trailer camper well and levels out the truck a great deal. Appreciate ya.

    Don't lose those little pins that hold those heavy L bars in ! There are 2 of them on the Thumb release to take the bars off and on !!!! They are located in front on the Thumb tab it self ! They will Fall out !!!! The whole unit is useless without them. Please Pass it on because as of yet I can't find any replacements! I am looking for a machine shop who can make me replacements.

    I too, like many others, have experienced the issue of chain size/length with regards to not being able to latch any link other than the top/last link onto the latch hook. SIMPLE SOLUTION! During initial settings determination, disconnect U-bolt on bottom link and put it through whichever link you need up the chain, as needed, to obtain predetermined hitch height. It fits perfectly and the excess chain links simply dangle free and unencumbered. Problem solved, no extra chain purchase necessary! Note: I suggest to NOT cinch down U-bolt nuts until AFTER you determine the correct chain length for your specific set-up. JUST REMEMBER TO CINCH U-BOLTS WHEN FINISHED! I hope this fix works as well for you as it did for me! Y'all have a nice day.

    you're limited to only using the one Link at the end of the chain what happens when you need to make an adjustment ???? like when you swap to a different trailer are you load a little bit more in the trailer than you had when you cut the chain think about what you said

    If you need a longer chain for a change in trailer load, simply loosen the u-bolts and extend the chain. The method described is great for those who consistently use the same settings and eliminates counting links or having loose links at the top.

    Good video family!!!!! I was having a major problem towing my race car recently with the trailer brakes. The tow vehicle and the truck was UN-level which caused a error message on my trailer braking system. This should balance everything. I will only need to use this system when I'm towing cars. everything else I tow is okay. Thanks!!!! I'm getting this unit from Harbor Freight this weekend. Labor Day sell!!!!!!! Great review. Thank you. I just purchased this very unit (1-3-22) and I'll tell you that the chain link issue that you mentioned is the same. No change since you did this review. Some improvements are, the 3/4" bolts are a better quality with lock tight pre-applied to the threads and the hitch pin clip is nicer. Other than that it's identical to yours.

    Rusty Williams Thanks again Rusty! I'm glad you found this and the sway control kit video useful. White knuckle driving is a thing of the past for me! Adding this and the sway kit was the best thing I've done. I'm hauling a 7x16 enclosed and have put about 4-5k on since installing the two units. Both work so well I forget the trailer is back there. I have to keep reminding myself so I don't take off a fender...lol. I've been hearing the chains are still too small. At least you know in advance so you can correct the problem before finding out like I did. Let us know about the chain size and what you think after you get it setup and dialed in. Good luck to you and be safe, G.

    Hi G, I just wanted to let you know a couple of things. One, I found your video very helpful during my installation of my weight distribution hitch. Two, in my kit Item #61720 which I purchased on December 20, 2014, the chains in my kit were also to small and I had to purchase the larger chain. Thanks again for the heads up it really helped me ahead of time while preparing for my install. JB

    Thanks John! I'm glad the video helped you out. I imagine the chains will eventually be changed to the proper size. They might not even know of the problem, but I'm sure they will at some point. To me, it would have been more bother to deal with them than to just get what I needed and move on. I've probably driven about 2k miles since installing it and it works great! The sway control works great as well, but does groan quite a bit. I'm finding it's just the nature of them. It sure turns some heads because it sounds like a whale...lol. I haven't cleaned it though, which might help. Take care, G.

    You probably got an older packed unit Christopher- since the chains were not correct. I've had many comments stating theirs were correct- but some not. I believe HF watches my reviews since many products with problems are now corrected based on what I've stated in my reviews- which is great. Well, I know they watch because I was contacted by them recently asking to post one of my reviews on their site. I did not respond since my reviews have no bias and I call them like I see them. For the extra benefit of sales due to my efforts, they would have to pay...lol. I don't know if you will get any satisfaction from them- but let me know if you do. I'm glad the video was useful. I bought one of these and have installed it on my truck (thank you for the detailed instructions). I am wondering how tight should the chains be. I'm hearing quite a bit of creaking while turning. Earlier tight it made a sort of pop sound. I got out and looked and everything seemed fine.

    No problem! I'm speaking from memory, but I believe you want to adjust the chains so the tow vehicle is no more than 1" lower between the front to the back. I too hear some popping/creaking from time to time. If all looks good, I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck, G.

  • @oldbearsden9819

    @oldbearsden9819

    As long as your front fender well at the top is no more than an inch and a half higher than when it is not under weight then you are fine. That popping sound is not a bad thing. You are making a turn with your trailer that is tightly secured to your tow vehicle. Swing a tiny bit wider when making turns. The popping will never go away completely.

You can even get shims online for just this purpose, which does nothing short of confirming what I've done here. Agreed, swaying is swaying- not doubt. My setup still works like day one. On your A-frame trailer you can put 2 sway bar's on the first trailer and tow a 2nd trailer in some states: But the catch is it has to be easy lifted "weight-distributing hitch" with 2 sway bar's and both need to have breaks Electric on the first trailer, but the 2nd trailer has to have the Hydrolytic breaking coupler it can not have any other kind of breaking system and your clamp's "leveler's" will have to be wielded to the trailer along with the trailer sway attachment ball. And I bet you fell in love with the easy lift within 1 mile and will never pull a trailer without one again.

    Hi G, I was thinking you could have cut the original chain to length and used it instead of buying one with more open links but then realised it would mean dedicating this device to one trailer and also not having the option to tailor it to different load weights? I've never seen this towing aid before but I've not towed anything bigger than a standard car trailer for many years so haven't needed anything special to help. I think that's a great device and would have had one if they had been available years ago. Best Wishes, Brendan.

    Yeah Brendan, I thought of cutting them like you said, but didn't for the same reasons you cite. I could have used quick links to add and subtract the length of the chains when needed, but it would have cost me more than simply changing out the chains to a larger size. Not to mention having more loose things to keep track of. It should make my setup safer for sure. Thanks again,G.

    If you can figure out how many links you want to take out of the chain, you can do it at the bottom end (U-bolts)since that will fit through the chain with two links in one, and then always use the end link at the top end to hook on the tightener. Sort of a kluge, but if you can't go get some 3/8 chain, you can get by. This will work is you only plan on using it on one thing all the time.

When I installed it to while picking up the hauler, low and behold the chains were too small, just as you and others experienced. Corrected that today. Quick, question, when the rear of the two vehicle is still sagging a little to much, is the correction to go up another link on the chains, or to angle down the hitch another couple degrees? The dealer helped me install it and my ball is essentially vertical, no angle at all.

    Bobby Lane No problem Bobby! I'm glad it was useful. I guess they still haven't fixed the chain issues, which surprises me. If your bars are pretty parallel to the trailer frame when the chains are hooked up (or better pointing a bit downhill as you have it set), you might be able to get away with removing a link to level out the tow vehicle. But, if they're pointing uphill towards the trailer when all hooked up, I would adjust things. If you let off the chains and hold up on the bars and they're not tilting downhill towards the trailer side of things, I would install some of the washers to tilt them down- then play with the chains again. The goal is to have the bars parallel with the trailer frame, within reason, when everything is hooked up and under tension. I hope this helps! Good luck, G.

    Thanks! nice review. About the chain, I guess the idea for them was to use the other end? I mean take 2 links from the other end. I have a question, as far as I understood, weight distribution hitches need to fit specific trailer weight (tongue) For example, brands as Husky and Curt have "400 to 600" "600 to 800" I gues is because of the "elasticity" of the bars. This hitch (that is pretty similar to others brands) says "up to 1000" that means that will work on a 600 lbs tongue trailer? will that be ok?

  • @ghostses

    Thanks! They may have meant that- but it would require using tools to shorten the chains. That would be fine if you're always towing the same setup. This setup works fine for my rig. The add-on sway control kit as well. While I won't say the equalizer isn't a fine product, it would be too much of a hassle for my application. Since my load is always changing and I need to make adjustments frequently and quickly, I can move to a different link of chain in less than 1min and be rolling again. It appears you would need to get out tools, take off the l brackets, adjust them, then reinstall with the equalizer. If I were towing an RV, or something where everything remains fairly constant, I might entertain one. I encourage everyone to do their homework and get what would work best for them and their application. For me, this fits the bill quite nicely. Thanks for the post, G.

    +Joe Walker Thanks Joe! I've probably about 15k on it now and haven't had any trouble at all. No trouble backing up even to a jack knife position and do not have to remove the bars. @@ghostses Reversing may be possible but it will increase the tension on the spring bars. The trailer pivots on the ball. As the vehicle turns the distance between where the bar slides up into the hitch and where the chains hook will decrease in one side and increase in the other side. The bar can't get shorter or stretch(maybe a few thou but it's incidental) so the chain end will swing either forward or backwards. If you have something hanging from a fixed point and swing it will rise in elevation which increases the stress on it. So basically, it may be possible but its a good way to damage the system.

  • @ghostses

    @ghostses

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@jonyemm I see what you're saying Jon and gave your comments some thought. I agree, that's how the chains must move, but they will do so no mater the direction of travel as the geometry remains constant (to a degree which I will cover below). The only difference would be which one being pushed or pulled over the chain center would be flipped. Meaning, if traveling forward and turning right, the right chain would be pushed rearward and the left chain pulled forward (both over center). Turning left would reverse the action. Traveling in reverse would do the same thing, but the push and pull over the chain center would be reversed. Hope I got that across clearly. The maximum amount of chain movement, over center, would be dependent on the minimum turn radius of the tow vehicle and trailer combined (moving forward). This would change depending on the setup with regards to a different vehicle and length of trailer. I guess the combinations would be vast. Moving rearward, up to the minimum turn radius of the forward direction, all movement would be identical and impart no additional stresses. However, when traveling rearward you can overshoot the forward minimum turn radius quite easily- all the way to a jack knife, which would increase the movement of the chains over center. How much movement that would/could cause damage to the system, would depend on the setup I would think. For my setup, a K1500 with a 7x16 cargo trailer- I've had no problems all the way to a Jack knife. But different setups may yield different results. The maximum movement that would/could cause damage is the unknown variable I can't ascertain. The conclusion I've come to is this: it depends on the setup. While "I've" had no problems all these years doesn't necessarily mean it's a one-size-fits-all proposition- and certainly may not be applicable to those that post the question mainly due to not knowing their setups. I try to say "don't take my word for it", meaning I'm responding based on my experience and they need to do their own research, but they may not, and that's a bit lazy boiler plate on my part. While I do these types of videos for no compensation, I don't want anyone getting hurt or damaging their gear if they don't research further, but is is hard to keep up with everyone. I need to come up with a "It depends on the setup" response moving forward. How to keep it simple is the tough part though, but that's on me . I appreciate your comments and it gave me pause to think a bit. Thanks for that. There may be some holes in my thoughts, but that's where I landed. Thanks again and take care Jon, G.

    Yeah, that's a cop out! That's not how they should be adjusted. As you know, the adjustments are made from the top (tooless), not from the bottom. Good luck, G.

    Hello, Great video by the way! I purchased this kit from HF this weekend. Ok I live in Texas and as you can probably guess, my truck has a lift on it. 6" to be exact. After reading their directions and watching your video, I don't think this is gonna work on my truck. Any ideas? Do I need a drop hitch for this to function? HF doesn't sell them so I wonder if HaulMaster makes them? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you sir

    Thanks! If you can't get the ball low enough due to the lift kit, a drop receiver would probably be your only option. Any good quality 2" square receiver should work. I would put the ball in the lowest setting then measure how much drop you would need- then get one accordingly. That way you're dropping as little as possible to make up the difference. You might dig around the web to see what others are doing. This is just my opinion, but the way I would go. Good luck, G.

    A bit more info here. They do sell drop shanks for this problem. Check these out. It's probably a better solution. You would need to make sure the dimensions are correct for the HF unit, but I would imagine they are. www.etrailer.com/search/Drop+Shank

    I have no problems backing up with it on. Just make sure you jack knife the trailer in both directions to make sure nothing hits anything else. If it does, you might have to remove parts of it. If not, you're good to go. Hope this helps, G.

    Have the hitch works well. Be sure your jack is up far enough up to avoid the bars on tight turns forward or back.

  • @jonyemm

    @jonyemm

    Reversing may be possible but it will increase the tension on the spring bars.

    I had to buy 3/8" chain instead of using the 5/16" chain they provided bc the chain link will not fit over the mounts provided. Links are too small. I'm hooked to the 5th chain link down.

    Just picked up item 61720. Bolts are m20 rated 8.8. Chains were too small, however I did notice that they are rated G100. I opted for a ball hitch with 1-1/4" shank rated at 12,000lbs.

    The hitches are great if you are some what inexperienced at towing or going close to your GCVW. But using one under 50% of your vehicles gcvw just pushes the tow vehicle around. If your really wanting to truly tow goose neck/ 5th wheel is the way to go.

    It seems like a nice hitch for the money. I would have replaced the big bolts and nuts hardware grade 8 and use lock washers. Grade 8 on all hardware when safety is a must.

  • @ghostses

    @ghostses

    +Thomas Tickle It is Thomas! I've towed maybe 8k miles with it and it's still perfect. I took a peek at the bolts that came with it. They are high strength grade 8.8. So, probably closer to a grade 5 equivalent. They are doing the job fine for me, but an ounce of prevention over a pound of cure might warrant a grade 8 upgrade. A few bucks for peace of mind seems like a small trade-off to me! Good luck, G.

    I know its been awhile since you posted this but i have question. When you tried the original chain you had the excess chain above the hook putting the hook on the braket at the middle of the link where the weld is. This section of the chain and most chains is more narrow due to the weld. Then when showing your new chain you put the excess at the bottom of the link, below the bracket hook. Didyou ever try the original chain, with the excess below the bracket hook?
