Alf's Mustang Garage is not responsible for any mechanical or technical error that you may encounter when working on your own car. You are responsible for your own quality control and your own proper repairs.
Today at Alf's Mustang Garage we bring in a 65 Mustang Fastback with a rear differential howling. Turns out the pinion bearing pre-load is too loose and needs to be reset. We remove the pinion support from the third member, replace the crush sleeve and set the pre-load. This is all done on a 8" Ford.

🔔😎 I put solid sleeve from Currie in mine. Never have to be concerned by assembly or engine torque over stressing it. I prefer the Eaton TrueTrak gear type posi. Very agressive and very smooth. Must use plain mineral lube. No synthetic, no slip additive... Either reduces the posi bias. I always install a magnetic drain plug for easy routine oil changes.

Just found your channel. I am trying to catch up on all your videos. Just getting ready to install a 3rd member now. Ii started restoring a 1965 Comet Cyclone 2 years ago and didn't have your channel available then. I saw some mountains in the background of your video and recognized them. I live in North Ogden around the corner. You are going to keep me busy . . .

Excellent tutorial. I will doing this very job this week on my 66 mustang 8 inch. Can you give the part numbers for the crush washer, yoke seal and carrier o-ring? (Would save me a little research). Thanks again for your great videos!

Wow, Ford pinion preload is much easier to set than a in a '65 Chevy...I just had the yoke nut back off of my '65 c10 and it caused the pinion to groove the carrier...what a mess! It turned out the right bearing had turned to dust which caused everything else to fail. Once I start working on my '65 Stang your videos will be my go to for how to.

Hey Alf. Are the crush sleeves you listed compatible with an 8 inch diff? Says they aren’t compatible but I was wondering if they really are and Amazon was just wrong. Your content is so helpful and it’s great thanks for doing vids.

I'm fairly certain that those actually do fit the 8" despite amazon saying they don't. Worst case, compare them before you open the package that way you can send it back if I'm wrong 👍

@@AlfsMustangGarage that crush sleeve is a bugger to crush! I know I'm a pretty good bit above 175 ft lbs on the nut (breaker bar and cheater pipe) and I'm seeing about 6 inch pounds preload. It feels much better than it was when I took it apart, but I'm reluctant to put anymore torque on the nut for fear of doing something bad. Is this normal?

Hey do all 8" diffs DO NOT have an oil slinger between pinion seal and a gear? Doesn't it supposed to be there same like 9" does?

Hi, I recently added LSD and 3.55 gears to my mustang 8 inch. Initally, it had some howling when turning at slow speed and slight whine. After driving for a while (I guess after braking it in and bunch of figure 8s) howl and whine was gone. I drained diff oil, added friction modifier and new 80w-90 oil. It now makes a horrible ratchet clacking noise when turning slow. Both sides. Straight sounds just fine. Only turning at slow speeds. All I did was drain and fill oil. Any thoughts?

  • @AlfsMustangGarage

@@AlfsMustangGarage I was worried about that. It was going to be a while before I opened her up, so I reached out to Quick Performance (where I bought LSD n gears), and they mentioned that they've had other users call them about similar troubles when using "inferior /off brand additives" sold in popular parts stores. He said to use the Ford Motorcraft additive friction modifier instead. So I drained some oil, added the 4oz bottle of Ford Motorcraft additive friction modifier. Drove it around for a while and the ugly sound is gone. It's back to normal. Yay! 🙌
