Step By Step Rear Axle Bearing Replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A couple of weeks ago I pressed these rear axle bearings for Alex’s 1965 Mustang Coupe.
He’s had the car for about six years now and an early mod, upgrading to the SSBC rear disc brakes (using ‘80s Ford calipers) proves to have insufficient parking brake application. We live in the northern Utah, and it’s not exactly flat land here. So after some discussion he decided to go with the newer Wilwood rear disc brake kit with the integral drum parking brake in the rotor hat, a pretty slick setup that is working much better.
But to install this kit, the factory axle retaining plates have to be removed from the axle. The options are, cut them off or press the bearings off. Well, when the bearings were discovered to be noisy and the axle seals a bit marginal, it was an opportune time to do some advanced maintenance and service the entire rear axle assembly with fresh seals, bearings, and fluid.
This video shows the entire process required to swap out rear axle bearings, start to finish.

Great new video Walter. Love the hands on video and all the explanations. Did the same job with my Harbor Freight press, after some tweaking I didn’t have to remove the studs.

It occurred to me that I hadn’t done a set in nearly 10 years after I did this, and there are other ways to set up the press plates and bridge the bearing plate, but this worked adequately.

Best video on that topic that I have seen so far, thank you 🙏! Have subscribed! Would I need a 20 ton press or would a press with 6 tons or 12 tons fullfill also my needs?

A 12-ton will install most axle bearings adequately, but can be a little insufficient when removing them. Larger (wider) bearings like those found in trucks can be more difficult and sometimes it’s easier to use a cut off wheel to remove a section of the outer race and a roller, then split the inner race for removal.

Thank you for your advice. So I will look better for a little more headroom and leaning towards a 20 ton press 👍🏻

WHAT if I dont have a press?? Can you use a piece of pipe to gently drive them on?

Not recommended. I’ve seen them put in an oven to make them grow enough to reduce the press fit, but you risk damaging the seals and pushing out grease above 250°F. Rent a press or pay someone who has one to do the service if need be.

Knocking the ring off is a lot easier if the axle is about waist high. Set the axel on a vice mounted over a leg of a bench, use a bigger chisel and a bigger hammer. You don't need to drill the ring. Just hit it like you mean it.

Without the retainer plate what keeps the axles from sliding out of the housing?

The axle bearings were changed during a conversion to Wilwood rear disc brakes. They use a C-shaped caliper bracket that retains the axle. It simply slips over the axle during installation. Thought this was mentioned in the video.
