Selling direct is an interesting concept and but does not seem worth the assumption of risk and opportunity cost of s/h. Maybe once I as a “best-selling author” this would be a viable option. Thanks for breaking down the process.

Wow! I was just updating the price of my paperbacks today when I noticed how much went to a Lulu order yesterday. My print cost for one book went from 4.44 to 6.98 not including their processing charge. Guess there's only Lulu for single printing. For my eBooks and audiobooks, I do use Bookfunnel. With them adding the audiobooks, I can sell all formats from my site.

Yes Lulu has continuously raised their prices so much it's prohibitive. It's too bad because they were a good solution ... but someone will come along and fill this void I'm sure of it!! I'm pumped about Book Funnel.

Julie, excellent content as usual, will be relistening this weekend when I can take notes......only thing I would add, as a new author like me that I am still learning is....authors should really research the additional accounting/bookkeeping and potential for sales tax registration (cross border nexus) and filings and getting with your CPA and whether a DBA/LLC needs to be added to "do this right". For example, if its $300 to register for LLC and $XXX for state-by-state sales tax nexus management, all impacts the profit side.

It's such a complex topic and I am by no means an expert ... I'm a Canadian living in the US and, as a result, I have a C-Corp that and dba's under that C-Corp. My set up makes little sense for most people in the book business. If you are in Califormia you have to pay $800/year to have your set up so it's not really worth it unless you are going to be funnelling other income through it. It's so important to get legal and accounting advice for your specific situation. I'd love to help but there's not a good solution that is universal! Happy Friday! I already have a Stripe account for other stuff online, but I didn't realize that I could use it at live events to take card payments - that's great in the day and age of nobody carrying cash anymore.

I sold my first two books directly to readers, but they were my students and the transaction was in person during their session. It was easy and straightforward. I doubt that I'd want to sell my books directly in any other way because, quite frankly, it looks like too much hassle both coming and going. For me, fees are worth it to just let Amazon, etc. handle the grunt work. I already did enough work writing the book, thank you! :) I'm familiar with Payhip, but I've not done much with it.

Yes yes yes! Book Funnel is a fabulous way to do that. If you have an audience why give the money to other platforms!

This video was so helpful as I was thinking that someday I might sell my books on my own website. I was considering Lulu because of their ability to connect to a site like Shopify and they were working on Woo Commerce which would be very helpful. Now I know that if and when I get to that point I had better check and double check to make sure that such a move would prove profitable, and take a good look at shipping times. This video definitely gave me a lot to think about.

Just saw your video, a year later. Ha! I don’t find the extra work difficult at all. But then again I sell books online, it’s not extra work as some might think. I will be selling my books direct where I have control of what incentives I can put in my shipments as well as control the shipment delivery itself.

Thanks for all of your great info! I’m a new author who is learning. Your videos are greatly appreciated! Has anyone had this experience? Whenever I’ve ordered author copies from KDP Amazon, the quality has been poor. The last time I ordered author copies, the printing wasn’t straight on the page, pages were falling out, there were print smudges, unevenly cut pages and even poor binding (only 2 out of 9 books were acceptable). An author may not get their money back… I reported this to customer service.

As much as I possibly can I order my author copies from Ingram Spark. The extra dollar per copy I pay is worth it to have better quality, because yes, I have experienced this. They take a fee when you sell just like any payment processor does. I don't think they have set up fees but rather charge a percent when you are paid through those platforms.

I know this is an older video but it raises a question; is it possible to buy bulk author copies from Amazon and have them shipped directly to your client? I’ve been doing some research on this and can’t find an answer. I have a few churches who may potentially buy bulk but they are a few states away.

Hi Julie I have just watched three of your very informative videos. I am very close to publishing my own book hence the research into Selling Books Direct. If you get chance perhaps you could give me guidance on selling a book that is not the norm! My book is called "The Bondage King", 30 years of Designing, Building and Selling bondage & bdsm equipment. I had a store in Sydney for those years from the early 1980's and I have put together many of the funny stories that went with that time, I must stress that this not in anyway pornographic, if you must give it a title it's about Fetishes.
