How to self study using MOOCS (Udemy, Coursera, and other online courses) | self study online
Hi friends! In this video, I go in depth on how to self study online using online courses and how to not give up like a third of the way in. If you have bought online courses and just never actuallly finished them, you are not alone. An average of only 10% of people actually finish an online course. And I was the 90% too before I developed and went through the process that I talk about in this video.
Be warned, this is a thorough discussion that isn't just tips and tricks - it's going to involve some introspection from you as well. I promise it's worth it though.

About me
Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

Currently I am taking online courses in Coursera. I totally agree with you that self learning needs a purpose, but not just money. And your video about Google analysis certificate is really helpful.

That's right, but what if the only purpose you're learning the course for is money? Is It very wrong to earn money by learning helpful skills? I don't get it...I mean, I do love things and try to enrich and improve it, but sometimes, the motivation is money, am I right?

I resonate with what you said and agree with you in many of the subjects you covered in this video, yet I am still amazed how you put everything together in a concise and effective way! I would love to see more videos on topics on how to improve communication skills working in tech industry!
Tina, this video is really helpful. So much value in just several minutes. Not only mechanical stuff but also the mindset that a course is a tool not the purpose.
2 of my favorite books as well!!!
I've been beating myself up since I've been following along online courses the past few months and thinking that when I finish I'll just magically know how to do everything. Then I started my first project and realized that I actually didnt know anything. Your video has realized I've been studying the wrong way this whole time. Even though it's hard I won't give up!
Tina you rocks! thanks for the honest and great content you have here! 💯💙
honestly, this is probably the most insightful video on the topic I've watched, thank you so much! great structure, took notes and will immediately implement 🙌
Great video Tina! Completely agree with your points!

I like how your video is structured. Great delivery as well. This is meaningful content. Ty!
Tina - Loved the goal (x and y axis) graph that you described. Never thought of this. Your tip is equivalent to what James Clear says in his Atomic Habits - keeping a Habit Tracker Template. Both give you a way to measure yourself and see the metrics for yourself. Active retrieval from Ultralearning is also a useful tip. Thanks for such useful tips :-)

I think this is some really solid advice. 8:16 I think personally I would encourage persons while doing the course to come up with their own additional projects. It could be just a slice of the project or the entire thing (if small enough). Another tip is definitely looking at other people's code and reverse engineering any bits and pieces you like.
This is so helpful and encouraging! Thank you for sharing these nuggets of wisdom.
Your advise is sound! It's been interesting learning about your journey. It's facinating to see you speak of your imperfections, yet how much information you have integrated and what you have accomplished personally and professionally. You are a remarkable woman! Kudos! Don't know about that jacket though.
You are a true inspiration.I have been watching your videos and learnt a lot from you.. thank you Tina Huang!!
I really like that first step, understand what you want to know first. Also, loved that I have read a book Tina has read too, “Ultralearning” was really good.
Really refreshing and insightful. Even though I already know most of these but I don't really have time to sit down and reflect. Great vid!!!
I love the content and I am obsessed with ultralearning! Thank you for this video! 🥰
Hi Tina! I'm really enjoying your videos.. I can relate to a lot of what you talk about so it makes me feel like I can learn to code too!.. Could you do a video about how you created your "score board"? I'd be really interested to see what that looks like. Thanks!

Hello! Thanks to your comment I've discovered Jupyter Notebook which looks great. If you don't mind me asking, how did you come around using it to take notes in Python? I've never used it and never actually heard of using py like that. (still a newbie, but for my uni curriculum I need to learn py for lab data analysis)
Great video. I am looking forward to your video expanding on note-taking.
Just stumbled upon you on my feed and the title itself attracted me as I have been wanting to learn through MOOC's. You just got a new sub.

Oh my God, I was just thinking that students who go to medical schools will always be a doctor, no buts. I read the description, and was shocked you're one of the very few medical students who don't want to work in the field of healthcare. I'm an IR graduate who's very sick of political science so I want to try out something different. I'm taking a lot of courses online (not as many as you think, but it's like I'm attending a college without interacting with a lecturer directly and self-paced courses mostly), and i've been enjoying them so far. i want to watch this video and ill add a note on my thought about this video.
Good material! Not only is your content interesting, but your personality is also pretty cheerful too.

Great video, very useful!
Learn information and do something with it. Have a (good) reason for doing things. Some good reasons : Better your life tangibly. Having a reason and a goal serves as a motivation. Create your resources. Have a mentor in the field that is closer to you. Do projects, like drilling. Structure thoroughly and put things together visually. You like the instructor or the materials used. Create accountability. (Social accountability) Keep à compelling score board. Acquire a skill and not just complete a course. Skip the fluff. Sign up for interactive learning programs. (kaggle, etc) Learn flexibly and optimize. Take note on the main things, not copious notes. Keep the reference locations noted. Watch at 2x 3x speed. Pause seldomly to avoid a cut in learning. Do active recall to better synthesize info in your words, to better internalize.

You just got a new follower. Great work 👏
Tina, I absolutely love your approach to data science. It looks very efficient and doable. Years ago, there were endless amounts of terrible advice. Most involved doing too many courses, books, etc. for hours on end without focusing on application/projects, getting a job, etc.. I tried learning Python 2 years ago but ended up quitting because it took too long to go through all the books/courses and get to a job-ready point. Now I realize a lot of it is just smoke and mirrors and that we all don't need to be perfect and understand everything 100% from the start. Now I realize I should have been focusing more on doing projects and less on finishing all the exercises in the books. Really appreciate you showing valuable knowledge that most people would hoard to themselves. Thank you!
All good tips. Thank you.
Tina, you are great!

Love this video. Register my as a fan
IF I have a project in mind should I watch the bit of the video and think how to implement it in my project? OR should I watch the entire course once to figure out exactly what all things are possible? and then start working on the project? OR first work on the project that the instructor is teaching exactly the way he is teaching and then once completed work on your own project? Which approach out of these 3 will you prefer?
No dislikes at all You got a cool fan base
