For the uninitiated, documentary filmmaking seems to thrive on spontaneity but there is just as much planning involved as a fiction film. In particular, this overlap can be found in how these productions are scheduled. In this video, we will break down how to make a shooting schedule for a documentary.
WHAT IS A DOCUMENTARY STRIPBOARD?
In filmmaking, a stripboard is a condensed version of the project’s shooting schedule. In a more traditional narrative filmmaking situation, each scene in the screenplay would be given a “strip” with all the pertinent information included. These strips are mounted on a board and arranged into the actual shooting schedule.
Many documentaries don’t use a screenplay in the traditional sense, however, but that doesn’t mean a stripboard shooting schedule can’t also be utilized.
HOW TO MAKE A SHOOTING SCHEDULE
For documentaries, there are different types of “scenes” needed to be captured, including b-roll, interviews, events, etc. Each of these scenes can be added to a screenplay in StudioBinder, just like a traditional screenplay, and now the stripboard works just like any other project.
Group your scenes by location, shooting day, interiors vs. exteriors, and more. And when it’s all put together, print out customizable PDFs for the crew. That’s it!
