HOW TO INTRODUCE CHARACTERS IN A SCREENPLAY
A character’s first introduction in a story is highly important - first impressions matter! This holds true for all types of writing, including screenwriting. But in that case, there are also specific formatting traditions you should be aware of. These are “rules” per se, but there are conventions on how to introduce characters in a screenplay. In this video, we will dive into the formatting and storytelling considerations for beginning screenwriters.
CHARACTER INTRODUCTION SCREENPLAY FORMAT
Again, there is no precise “rule” for how to format a character introduction in a screenplay. That being said, there are some conventions that most screenwriters follow. For example, the first time a character is introduced, their name should be written in ALL CAPS. After that, a regular casing is applied. You might also see the character's age written, sometimes in parentheses or separated with commas. For example, “CHARLES (33)” or “CHARLES, 33,”
The final bit of voluntary yet customary information to include in a character introduction is a physical description. This could include their body, wardrobe, and overall appearance. Beyond this, writers might also include some character traits. Typically, these are concise snapshots of the character - almost like a “head start” - because their actions and dialogue thereafter will provide a more complete picture of the character.
The writer decides when and how to introduce a character in a screenplay, but with these formatting and styling tips, you can make those introductions pop.
