HOW TO WRITE INTERCUT SCENES IN A SCREENPLAY
Intercutting scenes in a film or TV show is a very common technique. But how does that get indicated in a screenplay? Knowing how to write intercut scenes in a screenplay is a simple technique and it will give you, as the writer, the ability to clearer explain how these scenes should be interwoven. In this video, we will explain the most common methods of how to intercut scenes in a script.
INTERCUTTING IN A SCRIPT EXPLAINED
The first option for intercutting in a script is to use the scene heading. At the end of the scene heading, you can type “Intercut” or “Intercut with xxx” and then your reader will know the following scene will be intercut with the previous scene. You can also do the same thing as a subheading.
Or you can add indications for intercutting in the action/description. When using this method, it is usually common practice to be explicit about what this scene will be intercut with. Finally, you can use a transition to start and end an intercut sequence.
Like with all formatting conventions, there is no hard and fast rule about which method you choose. The only important thing to keep in mind is that you be as consistent as possible. That way your reader, producers, and crew will know exactly what you intend. In screenwriting, clarity is king!
