Heck, let her trim you up! As long as SHE is happy with the result...WIN WIN
I worked at a circle saw when I was a kid. We had log trucks bringing logs in and we used a some type of ruler that did the math. The sawmill was owned by a pallet shop.
I appreciate this video. I do not buy logs, I use the ones on my property. This did give me some good insight into the process in the event that I run out of trees to mill.
up here they are scaled at the mill with international one quarter scale stick noone buys by weight and not any difference on spruce and fir (balsam) or hemlock just white pine and larch has different grades red pine does utility poles or sawlogs whole dfferent world lots of our stuff goes to canada, same deal doyle is used by a couple of hardwood mills good for big wood screwed for small
"Team work" makes the dream work. I like your system for scale and same as I used to do if I had to scale loads. I liked the scale shack better as they kept it from the person feeling like I cheated in some way ... I know they see trees, but I seen bananas, sap rot, limbs and such. A little two by four with a six inch hinge knot in its length doesn't make for a framing board, at best, some times can use in a pallet if its not compromised too bad.

Exactly!
Here in upstate N.Y. the Amish are paying $450 straight through with international scale.
Never knew how logs were scaled. I understand that also helps you to determine your profits. Thanks. Great video
Thank found very interesting and informative.
Good stuff guys.

Thanks man! Hold on to that scaling stick!
Awesome stuff. Not Q@A, but how about a video of the circular saw and when the handle is pulled what does the reader mean and what does a pull represent went comes to inches. I notice you never use a tape measure. When you cut a 2 x 4 is it a real 2 x 4 or the undersize we get at lowes or home depot? Thanks again for the video.
You should nickname Brittany. Butter cup
I really need to know more about the Doyle scale and do you put in how long the logs are to?

G'day Mr and Mrs Wallace, that chipped tooth was a shame out of the box, I pay $50 per cubic meter for logs here Down Under green they average around 1,25 metric tonnes per cube 👍.

In my opinion I wouldn't use the Doyle scale for conversion; it's the least accurate of the many different scale systems used.

@@TheOldManAndTheSaw It has it's purpose. Smaller logs take more time per bf because of inefficiency built into handling more logs and slabs. However as logs get bigger the accuracy of the Doyle scale gets very close to the International. Time is money in the mill business especially with margins being what they are in some markets. YMMV..

If I understand the question correctly........... In the metric system logs are bought by the cubic meter. In the US logs are generally bought by the 1000 Board Feet (M/BF). One cubic meter has 423.77 BF in it. 1- M/BF = 2.36 cubic meters. Or, maybe, I misunderstood the question.
I'm really curious as to where y'all are located at.

@@wallacefarmandsawmill I'd like to someday come over that way and visit y'all if it's possible of course. I don't believe in bein intrusive or nothin.
Doyle scale favors the sawyer especially with the smaller diameter logs. International scale is perhaps more realistic for actual production. I have run my own mill as well as had my own logging business (hardwoods) and can see that there are sometimes appropriate reasons to use one over the other.. It also depends upon which part of the country one lives in..

How much for lumber per mbf? Curious.

That is per thousand
Let Brit cut it and make that a video. 😂
Just trim it up
That's not how you scale a log . Take the log diam. times the length = approx. board footage . So a 10" by 10 ft. log has 23 feet according to SIMONDS scale and 30 feet according to " Wood-Mizer " . That's the number you stamp or write on the log end . Those numbers assume a straight log , if crooked take away 10 or 20 % .I sold my mill over ten years ago but i still have several log & lumber scales . All sawmill supply business's have log & lumber scales for sale and some for free . I watch your video's all the time and wish you good luck and safe working . Things can go wrong in a hurry around a mill ,
Damn that price ain’t worth shit must be price for just pine bc oak and that hardwood here in Kentucky is booming
Yes yes please shave it off It would feel so good, and you would not have snort in the winter
