How to Roleplay as Air Traffic Controller | Practicing IFR Approaches | Safety Pilot

Shooting approaches with a safety pilot is one thing, but having your safety pilot act as the controller for the flight makes it so much more realistic. Here's a how to guide for playing the role of an air traffic controller!

As always, a great vid. BUT.... why not just ask ATC for a practice approach opposed to the "Roll-playing"? I'm at the end of a part 141 IR program out of KJST, and KPIT is in my backyard so to speak. We never roll-play, and just talk to Johnstown Approach and Cleveland Center for all of my training. With that said, my CFII is on the new side. if there is benefit in doing it this way, I would like to know about that. FYI... some of the radio calls have been my downfall in all of this, but your vids have been helping me with it. Thanks for all the help you have given me.

Couldn’t you leave off the “with a Bravo clearance” and “along the approach course?” In other words: “we’d like to practice the ILS 10 approach into Allegheny County, at or below 3000 ft, terminating in a full stop?” If they vector you to the initial, then you’re cleared into the Bravo, and could always follow up to verify you’re cleared into the Bravo, if needed. The “along the approach course” doesn’t seem to add anything that’s not implicit already in the request.

If I (non US pilot) remember correctly as a VFR Flight you are not automatically cleared into Bravo Airspace in the US, you really have to request that specifically (Maybe because of some coordination work between multiple ATC Stations?). Maybe some controllers in the US do it automatically but I've seen other content with exactly this situation. (I think it was KFEAvia's Video into the US, last part)

If you perform this approach like this, can you log ILS approach without ATC clearance?

to practice the communication I might as well recommend vatsim

I think it’s more about learning the basic comm procedure for the request, and knowing what to expect. It’s important to know what to expect, compared to just following the instructions in Vatsim. This creates a deeper understanding of the overall process. And it lets you vocally role play the entire process realistically with a trainee (in the plane or in a simulator), under your own navigation and without an IFR flight plan. It’s good to get into the mind and process of the controller, not just following directions.

@@RetreadPhotovatsim have controller ratings and courses that could help with that also. You can also observe controllers in the software etc.

This seems the biggest difference between Australia and the U.S. all ifr training here is on ifr flight plans. They have a training approach website system for all the major airports so atc don’t get swamped with ifr approach requests. You can still fly the approach without a booking for normal non training approaches. There are radio calls around “airwork” with utc times to give atc a heads up if you’re practicing things like holds and when to expect you to be active.

Or you could fly the procedural approach from Allegheny just for the fun of it...
