How to Restore Headlights to Brand New Condition Under $20

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this Video I restored a headlight from a 2005 Lexus that had some serious oxidation and damage all with a $20 Sylvania Headlight Restoration Kit. I was thoroughly surprised at the results and how simple it was to do.

How much pressure to apply when sanding? I just did mine which didn't look nearly as bad as those in video however they look worse now. I wonder if i need to get back in and try harder. The lights didn't look hazy when i was done with first step (800 grit). Thanks

I just followed the pressure level in the kit. It looked pretty hazy for most of it until the end.

Bad news is, you'll be doing it again in 6 months or so. The best way to seal them at the end is to spray with a 2K clear, replacing the factory clear coat that was on them originally. A UV clear wrap or Ceramic coating will also work.

I've had good experience using an outdoor rated (uv stabilised) polyurethane semi-gloss or clear gloss, like minwax. Clean the lens with rubbing alcohol after sanding to 3000grit. Mix it 50/50 with mineral spirits and apply using a folded up lint free rag or blue shop towel. If you mess up the application, or end up with runs or beads, hit it with mineral spirits and remove it, then try again. Takes about 24hrs to cure enough to be driveable. Works a lot better than the clay waxes that come with a lot of these kits.

@@richardfox3924 Sorry, I realize now my phrasing wasnt clear in my post. No, 50/50 mineral spirits and the polyurethane semi gloss or gloss. Wet sand the lens to a high grit. Clean the lens of all sanding schmoo. Then clean any oils or greases left on the surface with isopropyl alcohol. Then apply the mineral spirits/polyurethane clear coat, and allow it to cure for 24hrs before driving anywhere.
