How To Restore a 70 Year Old Black and Decker Model 457 Holgun Drill

I got two of these drills in a tool box haul and although they have no ID tags I was able to figure out the make and model by looking through a 1953 Black and Decker catalog. Can we get this old drill running and looking like new? Let's get busy!

This will come in handy if my B&D drill needs maintenance.

@@floridarusticrepairs I like the inflation adjusted pricing. People paid top dollar for quality, American made tools in those days.

Now that rummage sale season has arrived here in Michigan, you have inspired me to pay more attention to what's for sale. I don't need much in the way of tools, but there are a few items I'd like to have that maybe I could fix up. Thanks for another great video.

You can do it! I don't need most of these tools but they are fun to work on and I like saving them from the scrap bin and donating them to people who will use them. I do keep some for myself though. :) If there's anything in particular you want to see a tear down of let me know and i'll shoot a video of it if I can find a similar one.

I have one of those drills that belonged to my father. You can still read the label on it and it runs great. I posted it on FB marketplace.

Cool! The two i have are both missing the labels unfortunately. Either that or they were sold by another company which didn't badge them.

Another great repair and clean up. I love these videos. Are these drills prone to electrical shocks?

I would say no, but it is possible. The most important thing is to be sure you're using a three wire cord and outlet. People used to get shocked from these metal bodied tools because the cords had been altered or were in poor shape. This is why I always replace the cords if the third prong has been removed regardless of how good the wire is. In all of the tools I've repaired I've never had a jolt except 25 years ago from my grandfather's Black and dDcker drill which I finally restored last year. You guessed it, that power cord was shot.

Thanks! The Dewalt goggles are great. Nothing will get past them and they don't fog over as quickly as some. They do get hot here in Florida after a few minutes though.

Restore ??? - How much brush is left 30% 10% 5% - didn't remove it to find out. - plus a few more things missed out. Otherwise the clean up job was OK.

In future videos I'll make sure to comment on the condition of the brushes. These brushes did not look bad and in the dozens of these old tools which I've done, I only ever had a problem with the brushes once and that was because the wire had broken.
