How To Reset Flammable Vapor Sensor on Water Heater

Is your water heater showing a flammable vapor sensor code? Luckily that error code can easily be reset and you will have hot water again in less then an hour. The reset procedure will vary depending on which gas valve you have. Before resetting the flammable vapor sensor, make sure there are no flammable vapors or containers near the water heater. Here are the different gas valves and how to reset them:
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Rheem Water Heater with a White Rodgers Gas Valve:
1. Reset power to the water heater and tum the unit on. The FV error code will re-appear. Within 30 seconds...
2. Press and hold left and right arrow keys on the control valve at the same time, until the green light begins to blink.
3. Press left and right temperature adjustment keys in the following sequence: Left Right Left, Left, Right Left Right, Right.
4. If the error code is reset, all the lights will come on. The valve is now reset.
Intelli-Vent Gas Valve:
1. Reset is accomplished by first, turning off power to the water heater for 10 seconds.
2. Restore power to the water heater.
3. Within 10 seconds of restoring power, press the two temperature adjust buttons simultaneously until the left (green) “Vacation” LED begins to blink (approx. 5 second delay). Once the Vacation LED begins to blink, release both buttons.
4. Again, within 10 seconds, press both temperature adjust buttons simultaneously until the Vacation LED is on steady (approx. 5 second delay).
5. Release the two buttons, the microcomputer will clear the FVS lock-out and normal operation will then be restored.
Honeywell Gas Valve:
1. Reset the control by unplugging the blower, leave unplugged for at least 5 seconds.
2. plug back in and within 30 seconds cycle temp control from hot to low 6 times.
Robertshaw Gas Valve:
1. Turn the manual lever on the Control Gas Valve counter clockwise until it snaps to the "on" position.
2. Keep the temperature dial on Vacation.
3. Plug in the power cord and turn on blower switch and wait 3 seconds for the system self-diagnostic check.
4. Within the first 30 seconds, the temperature dial must be rotated back and forth crossing the 120° F mark at least six times. ( You can do this by rotating the red dial from Vacation to Hot to Vacation….)
5. This will reset the Control Gas Valve and cause it to display a normal flash code for the LED on the left bottom of the Control Gas Valve. Note: Slow blinking is the normal flash code.

THANK YOU!!! ❤❤❤ About 4 weeks ago, our basement flooded knocking out the hot water heater. Following 3 visits & $250.00, the service technician was unable to fix the problem. The “Flammable vapours detected” error persisted. After waiting for the basement to dry out, the problem continued. We were in the process of contemplating a new water heater. We watched your video today, re: The Honeywell model…my son followed your advice to toggle the dial 6 times… IT WORKED!!! We now finally have hot water!😂

Christmas day. I jump in the shower and no hot water. Please Lord, I have many things to do today and next week. I won't be able to replace it until next Friday. Wait, here is a video that says how to reset the Honeywell controller. I switched it off, unplugged it for 10+ seconds, turned it back on and turned the temp dial back and forth. It was blinking normally, the gas flamed on and then went out. The light stayed normal and after a few seconds it flamed on again and seems to be heating up at this time. Thank God for people like you that post videos like these.

So, I know I don't have a gas problem. Apparently, once you get locked out, you have to enter the cheat code to unlock it. You, my friend, saved me days and days of waiting for a service guy... and saved me the cost of the service call too. The heater is running normal now after clearing the lock!

A few days ago, I sealed my ceiling with oil-based sealer, and then my gas hot water heater stopped heating water and displayed a flammable vapor sensor locked code. Amazing presentation!

Sorry to bother you, but my ceiling stain came back, so I applied two additional coats of oil-based sealer and then applied ceiling paint, and the stains are now gone. Prior to applying the two additional coats, I turned off my water heater until after I applied the paint, so the fumes would be near zero when reapplying power. However, my water heater now continues to display the Flammable Vapor Sensor Locked code after trying the above trick to reset the water heater. Do you have any suggestions now? Thanks again for your video.

Additionally, my 7-pulse lockout code begins six seconds after turning on the Honeywell control box. Your video states to cycle from Vacation to Very Hot six times, but your written instructions state to cycle from Hot to Low six times...I've tried both ways after turning on the control box...even within the first six seconds. I even put the vapor sensor into a container to ensure the air had zero fumes.

Wow, first let me just say thank you for this video. You saved me a lot of money. Second, let me tell my story. I bought a new house and lived in it for a couple of years with zero water heater problems. In fact it was excellent. I had always used an electric lawn mower, then I bought a gas lawn mower. Around that same time my hot began going on the fritz. I'd go to take a shower and the water would be ice cold. So of course I did the only thing I knew how to do: I unplugged my hot water heater and plugged it back in. This would solve the problem for a couple of days - maybe even a week, then randomly the hot water heater would fail again. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, temporarily fixing my problem probably a dozen times. Finally, I took a close look at the blinking LED and determined it was indicating a flammable vapor sensor had been tripped. Amazingly, that thing was so sensitive, it was detecting fumes from the plastic gas can I had purchased to fuel my new lawn mower. The container was tightly sealed and was stored at least 20 feet away from my hot water heater, but even that was enough to trigger it. Now, thanks to this video I've reset the sensor and store the lawn mower gas cannister in a heavy-duty garbage bag. That seems to be enough to contain the fumes and prevent the sensor from tripping. Those things are sensitive! Thanks again for this video. Cheers, and good luck to anyone with an ailing hot water heater!

I looked up the fault code ( 7 pulses) in the manual for my 2016 Rheem PROG50 and purchased a new FVS for $23. Disappointed that it didn't fix it, I called my HVAC guy for a service call. While waiting I found your video. Back and forth 6 times on a Honeywell? Yeah right and click my heels together 6 times too? Imagine my surprise as it fired up! God bless you for saving me a $78 service call plus who knows what else I may have got charged

Thank you so much! I have the Honeywell. -Unplug for 10 seconds - Switch the dial back and forth 6 times from Low to Very Hot. My pilot light fired up immediately and I set my dial to preferred setting A.

Thank you! I had to replace my sensor, but this is still very helpful information. A few years ago I had my floors refinished and the sensor tripped. I was unaware of how it worked and when I asked a large plumbing company here in Denver if the sensor could be reset, I was told no and was then charged $500 for them to replace it. Total rip-off. This time I did more digging and bought a new sensor for $50. I was being quoted $2500 for a new water heater!

No one else was communicating this! Yes, your video gave my 3-family brownstone in NY City hot water today because I fixed the heater myself thanks to you. Otherwise me, my family and our tenants would have had to wait until Monday with no hotwater, and we would have had a large bill from the plumber. Thank you thank you thank you.. Thumbs up!!!

Thanks for the great video instructions! I replaced the temperature pressure valve on my water heater because it failed to reseal after testing (the unit was 12 years old). While working on that and splashing water on the floor I decided to clean the concrete floor (it was dusty/dirty). After installing the new temp/pressure valve and starting the water heater, it was throwing the flammable vapor error code and would not ignite. I tried a dozen times without luck, even after running a fan overnight to dry the concrete. I did more internet "studying" which told me how the flammable vapor circuit works. Basically, the sensor is a variable resistor that will change value when a flammable vapor (or other debris) is detected near the floor. My temporary solution was to disconnect the sensor and connect a 33,300 ohm resistor in its place. The water heater fired up immediately on the first try after that. So I know the sensor needs to be replaced (about $30 on Amazon). Without knowing your LRLL RLRR button code, I would have been at the mercy of a plumber looking to make a couple grand by replacing the entire unit!

I completely agree with everyone else... THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for this video. We recently had hardwood floors installed and the polyurethane used on the 1st floor caused the vapor sensor on our hot water tank to activate, although the tank is in the basement. Fumes were quite strong. Your tip worked like a charm. By the way, we have the Richmond (Honeywell) 50gal shown at the 3:36 mark of the video. Thanks again @World of Advice, much appreciated.

IMPORTANT! IMPORTANT! Thanks for a very helpful video. One very crucial point to remember (for the second type) is the need to immediately begin the button-pressing sequence within 2 or 3 seconds of restoring power. I was coming off a stool as the power cord was plugged in above and it never worked. So I switched the fan to off instead. After turning it on and quickly holding the 2 buttons I got the flashing green light and was able to reset.
