    The rim looks like it was sprayed with a primer or something when you are putting on the silicone?

  • @Thran69

    @Thran69

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yeah don't do that. That was a big mistake. The primer had no bite to it. The silicone slipped right off. Just wire wheel it/light scuff and apply silicone. DO NOT PRIMER (or the one we had by dupont) . THAT WAS A LESSON LEARNED THE HARD WAY.

    Very good job. If you put the wheel on the front of a car, turn the steering wheel all the way to access the wheel easier it will be easier to spread the silicone. I do this on a spin balancer for easy turning of the wheel, but i realize most people do not have that. The washing of the wheel is very important it is clean. Be quick with the silicone as in a few minutes it starts setting up. Thank you for your film, im sure it will help many.

    I've worked a lot over the years with silicone, If ever I am doing anything thicker than 1/16 in. I always let the first coat dry then add, it just gives a solid base that is immovable. But this is the best thing for wire wheels.

  • @Thran69

    @Thran69

    6 жыл бұрын

    ray b In this case you really just want one solid continous layer. We made the mistake of spraying it with Primer that ender up making the silicone not stick. Wire brush it up and lay a coat of silicone no more than 1/4 inch. The video says more, anything more than that I think is just a waste.

    Body shops use a material that's far tougher than silicone and it is impervious to petroleum. it's the black Polyurethane adhesive, you'll also see the windshield guys installing windshields with it. They put body panels together with it. Great stuff.

    Marcos Valentini Don't go fast, and prep the area with a wire brush or wheel. Wipe it with alcohol, solvent, brake cleaner anything to make sure the surface clean. The less silicone you use the better, but at least 1/4 to 1/8 inch of silicone. You should be fine, just no top speed runs. & greetings from the USA.!!

    Lee Hine This is bar far the cheapest and safest way of doing this. Some guys say the silicone is not the way to go, do your own research. It looks like the majority of the restoration guys agree on the urethane glue. (windshield seal glue) as it's allegdy have a better water, heat and stretching capability as compared to 100% silicone. This is how I did it. And it lasted 4 years and I'm not sure how the other rim failed. Taking apart in a week. When I'm not busy ✌️ 😁

    That is dangerous, the "centrifugal" forces at speed, together with the inertial shocks from bumps could easily lift that silicone. Decompression could then be very quick and possible catastrophic. ALL professional systems ensure that the sealant is held in place by a very strong and inelastic tape.

    Nice video, although I'd suggest you avoid all the mess by just using 3M 4412N tape. It ends up being almost identical except that it's instantly dry and better protected by the tape backing. There's a video of someone doing a KTM motorbike wheel here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c3utx6NqYtfLorg.html I've done it on lots of wheels, and the glue on this tape is like a super-sticky version of silicon, and the backing of the tape is like a strong PTFE tape so the spokes can't puncture it.

    @@snigwithasword1284 Nah, most of the indoor, odor free stuff from Home Depot is the neutral cure silicone. If the VOC warning says it releases methanol or silane during cure, it should be a neutral cure silicone.

    I have an unhealthy fascination with large spoked wheels like these but my google-fu is clearly not up to snuff. Do you ever check / tweak spoke tension? Is it possible to build or rebuild these wheels in a home shop, and are the components even available? This ignorant bike nerd appreciates all attempts to educamate.

    I think the going concensus is that this is normal for these to eventually leak. A permanent solution really hasn't been found besides the 200$ stretch silicone or other material type wrap. This is probably how it came from the factory. My video shows my DIY attempt at a common problem that held for over 4 years. Well Worth it in my opinion, and by the look of the view count. Others found it informative as well. To answer your question no never thought about it, and I don't think people do that normally.

    Whoever put that wheel balance on the front is super wrong

    boxboy50 Actually you can set the balancing machines to achieve different types of balances, including inside wheel only. If they do not achieve a nice balance after multiple attempts, they will let the air pressure out and move the tire on the wheel and start again. It's just more common to see them on the inside cause they want to be hidden. I agree that a two plane balance should be in theory, more balanced. Good eye for noticing that!

    Well it looks bad in the front it also eats the chrome later on too which causes rust

    Totally agree with you. If you got a pair of show rims, inside weights are mandatory!

    Tubes move around in the tires when cornering, efficiency, more weight. I mean really for this classic car it doesn't matter, we not trying to do land speed records. Your totally right! Unfortunately tubes in these zenith wire wheels tend to get cut up with excess burnouts. I dont who's been doing that 😁

    Use polyurethane sealant, not silicone! *facepalm* Silicone will harden up, start peeling back and falling off especially with vibration +centrifugal force of spinning... Polyurethane won't. "vulkem" is best Also you're using at least ten times too much! My frigging god! 😂😂😂

    toadamine Yes, we know that we used to much. As you can see in the comments I later changed this to 1/8th, to 1/4 inch. I disagree with the polyurethane. I think silicone is as good if not better due to its adhesion and anti corrosion properties. I think the silicone you used or material prep was not adequate for the job. Old silicone definetly will do this. I have over 6 tires that have been holding for over a year at 35 psi. No complaints world wide. So YMMV. Your right though, Its way too thick. 😂

    I think the thickness is perfect. We used a quarter inch to three eights on glass tanks for fish.

    toadamine depends on the silicone. silicone 1 is the old stuff that will seal almost anything its solvent based. whereas silicone 2 is the new formula made for the eco freaks. and its water based which doesn't give the same adhesion
