Just completed this service early this morning after starting late yesterday afternoon . Something helpful to those who live in warm/hot climates who decide to perform this service when the engine has been running for hours. After several attempts to get the transmission into temperature check mode from 30 minute cool downs to over an hour, I decided after multiple attempts to let it sit overnight. That was the ticket. The truck did exactly like the video showed. I would encourage this service be done with a cold truck engine or slightly warm. The temperature check range is just too close to ambient to try it hot. Paperclip worked great. A gauge of wire smaller than 14 should also fit. Thanks!

Thank you for this video! I followed this video changing my fluid on my 22 and it literally fixed all my hard transmission shifting from the factory truck. It turned out it was low by a 1/4qt from the factory. I was literally about to sell the truck bc of how bad it was shifting for a new vehicle and this was after multiple trips to the dealer filing complaints who assured me they checked the fluid while the truck still shifted awful and said this how these trucks drive. My suspicion is this dealers techs were either inconfident on the fluid check process for the tacoma or they just lied and didn't do it. Either way, check your transmission fluid if your brand new truck is shifting hard and don't believe the dealer when they tell you its how these truck drive.

A lot of guys think the color is indicative of fluid condition… It is NOT!! You must send the sample in to be analyzed. The old Toyota WS had a tracer dye that changed color from RED to PURPLE when exposed to UV. This has been long discontinued (old Toyota bottles) but the new red dye (all atf starts out life clear when blended) simply wears out over time and changes color. Work on a few hundred of these Aisin transmissions and you will see WS is a superior fluid with units lasting well into the half a million mile mark with little maintenance! Great video for DIY folks 👍🏻

The dealer removes all the fluid and contaminants, flushing the torque converter and the transmission cooler, it all so back flushed the screen filter negating dropping the pan which you would break most of the pan bolts anyway , what he’s doing is just a slight drain and refill putting a few quarts mixed with several old dirty quarts, the machine that does that at the dealer cost over 4 k that’s why it cost so much, would you just drain a quart of motor oil out and just add one back in or would you drain it all out

You’ll get various answers on this. I like to consider each year of age as 10k miles on fluids when mileage doesn’t meet it. That would put you at 70k on the fluid. It’s just a simple way to keep track of barely driven vehicles. Since the Toyota interval is 100k (60k severe), you’re fine either way. Drive another year or swap out transmission fluid. It’s due soon either way.

I drained 4 quarts (just to a tad lower to the line) and replaced with 5 quarts. During the Overflow check to a trickle, 2 quarts came out before the trickle, filling my container to 6 quarts or 1 quart more than what I put in. The math doesn't seem right? Test drive temp guage was up to normal, and there was no slipping feeling. So I'm happy, just puzzled and I feel based on the trickle that there is enough fluid. Thoughts?
