How to replace thermostat on 2013 Chrysler Town & Country

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Showing step by step instruction on how to replace the thermostat on a 2013 Chrysler Town & Country with the 3.6L V6, a bad thermostat can cause the engine to not reach operating temperature and cause a P0128 trouble code and prevent the interior heat to blow cool.

    Dan, you are the man! I followed your video on my town and country 2013. It worked!!! We replaced the thermostat, the check engine light is gone, the heat is in the cabin, and the temperature gauge stays in the middle once the car is heated up. My family and I were in Vegas when the check engine light came on and we had to drive back to Salt Lake and with the thermostat broken, I saw the engine temperature gauge literally do a roller coaster between the quarter mark and the halfway mark. Your video proved to be very helpful! Thank you!!! 🙏🏼

    Fyi - I completed the thermostat replacement and all is running smoothly. One mistake I made that I'd like to share - when I removed the old thermostat the old gasket stuck to the side of the engine. The new thermostat already had a gasket in it. So when I started screwing the new thermostat on - there were two gaskets. As I tightened the screws the two gaskets lined up and caused enough pressure to crack the housing. I had to get another thermostat but at $13 each it wasn't a major situation. I got going too fast and didn't pay attention. Anyway, maybe this will help someone else down the line.

    Make sure the old rubber gasket is removed because the new thermostat will have its own. I didn’t and doubled those up and it started leaking and left my wife stranded and like they say...... happy wife, happy life. That wasn’t the case for me and add in that it was 25 degrees outside and you got a recipe for disaster fellas.

    Thank you so much for this detailed video. Ive changed a lot of thermostats in many Town and countries that weve owned over the last 10myears, but this new engine design had me scratching my head. I do have one question that make you can help with. My check engine light is throwing the change thermostat code, but my van is still getting upnto temperature as normal and I have nice hot heat (it's been below hovering around 0degs here in Indiana for about a week). Do I need to change the thermostat or could something else be causing my vehicle to throw that code?

  • @theman9764

    So if i remember correctly, the temp gauge on this particular vehicle was registering in the normal range and the heat still worked pretty good but it kept throwing the thermostat code before the repair, i believe the coolant probably gets warm enough for the heater but not warm enough to make the ECM happy

  • @roberthousel9051

    Two questions - How much coolant can I expect to go in the radiator? Will it fill all the way to the cap so I can see it? And what is the worst case scenario if I don't get all the air bled out - will it eventually do so on its own?

  • @theman9764

    @theman9764

    3 жыл бұрын

    I would recommend having at least 2 gallons ready, you may not use it all but you'll lose some during the air purging process, use a catch pan underneath to capture coolant, and it's pretty important to manually purge all the air because it can cause hot spots and false readings on temp sensors

  • @jonathanmiller197
    @jonathanmiller1972 жыл бұрын

    When you put the coolant in the van do you start the vehicle first and then do it bleed it or bleed it first then started

  • @theman9764

    @theman9764

    You can probably try to bleed it before starting, that won't get all the air out but it should get most of it, the remaining trapped air should eventually make its way to the top

    In my van the heat never seems real hot, can't get it over 200F stays in 180s while driving( when not driving on the road-warming up on driveway it gets to high 190s) should I get thermostat replaced?

  • @theman9764

    @theman9764

    Probably couldn't hurt, they are prone to failure, also if the coolant level ever got real low for some reason, air can get trapped in the thermostat housing and also cause issues, bleeding the cooling system of air at the thermostat housing is crucial

  • @theman9764

    @theman9764

    You can do either, it's just less messy in my opinion to drain the radiator because if you just drain straight from the thermostat housing it tends to splash and run out everywhere

    how can I test if thermostat is my issue? A couple weeks ago I had a major coolant leak in the tube that goes to the rear of the van....... the van overheated quite a bit. I got the hose replaced. But now my heat is very very not hot. ...... it's warm but. My temp gauge is showing anywhere from 50% to 75% it doesn't just stay at same temp. It's always moving now. Used to always be 50%. Should I replace coolant temp sensor? What about the top thermostat?

  • @theman9764

    @theman9764

    2 жыл бұрын

    First thing, check for any obstructions or damaged cooling fins in front of the radiator, then turn on the A/C to verify fans operating, at full normal temp both the upper and lower hoses should be about the same temp, usually there's an issue when one is way colder or hotter than the other, chances are your thermostat has failed

    @@theman9764 Could a thermostat or coolant temp sensor ever cause the radiator fan to fail to turn on? I'm having overheating due to the fan not turning on. Recently replaced the fan and that fixed the issue for about 3 months. Now the fan is failing to turn on again and I suspect it is another sensor or thermostat issue failing to tell the fan to turn on.

  • @theman9764

    @@jjvanessen8055 yes a bad temp sensor can cause the fans to not come on, there are generally 2 temp sensors, one of them is for the gauge, one is for the ecm, the thermostat being stuck closed might prevent the fans from coming on because on one side of the thermostat the coolant is cool and its hot on the other side, issues like that can be difficult to diag without actually inspecting components

    @@theman9764 was tinkering with it tonight and I got the fan to turn on. I swapped compatible relays around and also was moving the wiring leading up to the fan. I've had no check engine lights, so at this point I am thinking there is a bad relay or the wiring leading to the fan has issues.

    Does it take longer than usual for the engine to reach normal operating temperature? The code basically sets because the ECM wants to see the engine warmed up in a certain amount of time, if it takes too long to warm up fully then it sets the code, there's not much else that'll force an engine to run cooler than a bad thermostat, i guess it's a pretty common issue with Chrysler vehicles

    Hello, my family just purchased a 2013 Town & Country a little more than a week ago from a Ford Dealership. A check engine light came on. We went to Advanced Auto Parts and the diagnostic test read "P0128 Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature) Confirmed". The dashboard temperature gauge is reading in lower 1/4 temperature. Both the heater and A/C are working fine. I do not notice any changes while driving. Do you believe I should just replace the thermostat or do you believe it might be something else? If you believe I should follow your instructional video, can you send a link to the part I will need? Thank you, sir.

    The vehicles temp gauge in this video was showing just a tad under the halfway mark before replacing the thermostat, it only changes the engine temp by a few degrees but it's enough to set a fault code, and with winter time upon us, it might not be a bad idea to just go ahead and replace it, it would suck to lose heat in the deep cold, just go to any auto parts store and ask for a thermostat for your year, make, and model, it should come assembled in the thermostat housing
