Great Video step by step, about 16 hours into my swap out, could never have done it without this video. Of course that plate that bolts to flywheel and transfers power from engine to tranny, I left on - my new transmission has a slightly smaller plate in diameter - taking it all apart again ARGH!!!

California Transmission in Ontario, CA. Jack up on 2 stands with foot brake on. Used a 3/4 in thick plywood bolted on the the regular hydraulic 3 Ton jack. followed this video directions very accurately. took me about a wk. to complete. Rebuild transmission doesn't come with new solenoids, you take your old tranny out, Make appointment . they will take off all solenoids off and install on the rebuilt one. In my case one solenoid gasket had oil leak. Called them. Made appointment , drove there. they fixed it. When arrived home ... it was still leaking. Ordered new gasket (they do not use new gaskets). Took solenoid off. investigated... found out there was a gouge in the body of the transmission at the gasket. it was not a bad gasket. called again. junior said bring tranny back will give you another........ or leave the van we will fix it. I was disappointed by the rebuild tech. and the foreman who took my solenoids off the old tranny twice and put on the new. Shady bussines....... good luck with your project.

How to Automotive hello sir I was having problems with my odyssey transmission so I went ahead and changed the transmission.... well now its worst than my other transmission...this one wont catch a gear if I put it in D and hit the gas its as if I'm going over a speed bump like it forces... can it be the torque converter or again another transmission thanks

Thanks for the video! I don't have a car lift and will have to improvise elevating the car but I will be limited to how high I can lift. How much ground clearance will I need to drop that tranny?

This is an excellent x 2 video. Do I really need to flush the ATF cooler (and aux tow package cooler) if the AT is just slowly going bad (hasn't grenaded yet) and I have had a fresh Magnefine filter on it since the AT was installed? By the way, my Honda Shop Manual says the torque on the 8 drive plate bolts is 8.7 ft-lb. It says to tighten the bolts to half the specified torque, then to the final torque, in a crisscross pattern.

that is a lot of work, im about to take a van to the scrapyard, the trans is good but i dont know if its even worth taking it out, i do not know if the trans has had regular maintence

Would you replace the engine from the top or drop the whole k member together w the engine and trans?

I did a job similar to this one. Isn't easier if we just drop the disk brake and cv axle at the same time with the whole frame? We can leave the brake caliper hanging (without braking the line of course).

hey brian, i am planning to do this job without shop lifts. do you think i need to jack the van up on all 4 stands or i can do with just jacking the front up high? enough to drop the tran? plan on supporting the engine with the harbor freight engine support bar and HF transmission jack... your thoughts?

I have 2004 odyssey and I would like to replace the rear motor mount (11:10 of your video) and I heard it’s very hard to get into, should I loosen the 4 subframe bolts and lower then subframe a little bit so I can have a little room to change this mount? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated,thanks

Pull the engine... cut the front radiator supports out, remove the coolers, pull the engine.. If it's got at least 200k miles now would be a good time to hit the steering rack while it's apart.

Is it possible to do this with the minivan on jacks and a transmission floor jack? I don't have a lift at home.

Yes, I did my 2001 MDX (nearly identical to the Odessey) in the driveway with jack stands, floorjack, transmission jack and homemade engine support

What can cause a transmission to go bad on this vehicle? Mind you I originally bought mines misfiring. I personally did not have the money to buy o.e.m ignition coils. I replaced them with aftermarket coils and sparkplugs. After I added trannsmission oil(ATF Honda DW1) same code cleared for about a day after that vehicle kept giving me shifting problems. What would you suggest I do before I go spending money on a new/used transmisssion? BTW Thank you so much for this video. Also what if My odyssey does not have a transmission drain plug?

Heriberto Ortiz There are many things in the translation to go wrong.. it could be a valve body issue , speed sensor issue Bad pump, converter, and more. It would probably be best to have it diagnosed.

Wow that van is clean, don’t see that here in Ontario Canada. Damn salt.

Help please. I've looked everywhere. Can a newer odyssey transmission be used in a 2001? Because the 2000 to 2004 I believe. Had many transmission problems. 05+ does not. They both have j series motors. I've heard the Acura guys use newer trans on theirs or manual swap. But all the j series guys know the 6 speed would be really expensive. I just don't wanna keep replacing these 01 autos every 50k. Thanks

Looks like about 2000$ just to get it changed out leave alone the rebuild ...lol

It's almost like the Honda company didn't plan on anyone ever having to get the transmission replaced or serviced, so they made it incredibly difficult to remove. I have a 2001 Odyssey, and it still works, but the lower gears in the transmission are starting to show their age and seems to take to long when shifting from 2 or 3 to higher gears. Reverse, 4th gear, and over drive, seem normal. Just replaced the fluid, but I need to do it again I think. That's why my mechanic buddy told me anyway. Just wanted to see if replacing it myself at home is feasible. It's not, don't have the setup or tools, or wits to even attempt this. I watched another guy on here take the transmission apart, that's even more complicated! Taking all that apart is one ting but putting it all back together is another and I don't think I would able to put it back like it was supposed to be. Thank you for showing the whole process to remove the transmission. At least now I have an idea of why it cost so much to have this kind of work done.

@@dduj777 No it's still working, and I've updated, replaced, and did maintenance on as much of the vehicle as I can, all the critical stuff. Such as changing the battery, the alternator, starter, all four tires, the catalytic converter (to put an end to that damn check engine light!). Also, flushed the transmission and radiator, which the radiator didn't need at all, surprisingly. Found and stopped both an oil leak and power steering fluid leak by changing the engine seals and replacing the rack and pinion system itself with a rebuilt one from eBay, turns a lot better now. Bought an new air intake hose because I cracked the old one open trying to bend out of the way instead of taking it off when changing the engine seals. It's probably time to change the air filter again, and just changed the oil again not long ago. Finally I had to replace the positive terminal connector on the battery because the wire corrosion ate the old clamp up which was causing starting problems. It gets me to work and back, that's what I need it for. It's used but still running, the guy who gave it to me figured it only had a few years left and told me to drive it till it broke down and not even bother trying to fix it, but for now it's still going and seems to run just fine after doing all that to it. I didn't do it all by myself, I had help for the advanced stuff like the CC and Rack from a good mechanic friend. If I do have to take the transmission out because it fails, I'll try and do it myself there if he's still able to help. He's getting on up in his years, so I should probably go visit him more and help him out. If fact he sent me an email the other day asking if I would come help him reclaim his yard from the over growing vegetation. After helping me do the hardest parts I've tackled yet for no money, I kind of have to. I guess next projects will be to inspect and replace the motor mounts and perhaps the shocks, or it's suspension system, and the brakes need to be checked again. I know the driver side caliper needs a bolt kit, it's loose and won't tighten down. I don't like it being like that. Just don't have the money right now. Just got to keep working. @@rathernot1502 You just described my 02 odyssey with 295k on the dash. From the transmission shifting rough in low gears ( mainly 2nd to 3rd for me) to the catalytic converter and downstream 02 sensor replacement 😂 I also only drive mine to and from work/school. My parents (OG owners) finally let me put it in my name. So I had to replace air intake tube bc it was sucking in too much extra air ( after maf sensor ) which was fouling the ignition coils just like the Clogged Cat was. I took it to a shop last week bc my steering wheel is slightly wobbly. I was sure it didn’t need an alignment so I told em to diagnose my issue… $1300 for a steering rack replacement?!? (9 hrs of labor he said). I just find the similarities in our beaters funny😂

@@dduj777 Yes your sounds as well worn as my van. God I'm so glad I changed the rack myself and didn't have to go to a shop. It cost me about 150 dollars to replace mine with out the mechanics costs.

Hi..., how can you tell that its slipping? Symptoms? Reason being I just got mine done and it tries to keep going after I press the brakes. The rebuilder keeps saying mine is fine. Plus I hear a very large click sometimes. When I put it in reverse. The motor mounts and tranny mount are all new...thxs

Mrinfoone The noise sounds like a mountain but since you said it's new it's possible one of the bolts is loose. The symptoms you describe doesn't sound like transmission either would like something wrong with the engine if you have any check engine light I would start there by. Codes

No engine light and the motor only has 45 k miles on it and runs fine. no noise just the bad small shifting jolts even after I get off the gas pedal.

These Nuts Labor should be around 600 bucks at the shop. I don't remember how much the parts cost. That's going to depend on if you buy new used or rebuilt.

you don't have to cut the Catalytic converter all you had to do was take out from the bushings and siding the sub frame over it guys never buy a transmission off at junk yards cuz they always lie about the mileage on it always buy a transmission off a running vehicle

Usermaxism that's all going to depend on if your transmission is new rebuilt or used. Some transmissions come with fluid and some do not. So you need to check with the paperwork.

I believe it's a neutral safety switch. it bolt on to the side of the trany.

😱 holy cats !!! Unfortunately the trans on my 2002 Odyssey just blew out ! The shop is going to do a complete rebuild for $2000 dollars ( maybe more if additional parts are needed ) it is going to take two weeks in order to get the parts n do the job . WOW- its a lot of work just to remove the trans - let alone repair the trans and then replace it ! Honda did not make it an easy task …

sorry to spam, but if you want to know why the transmission failed in the first place I have 29 videos rebuilding it and showing why it fails and how to fix the transmission's flawed design. It is due to washer ABCD on the 5 speed on the 3rd clutch pack, the oil lubrication holes are too small, the updated part has the fixed design. on the 4 speed I am assuming it is the same failed part on the 2nd clutch pack, again all is explained on my videos

I am trying to sell my van which I did the rebuild on which has probably like 100 miles on it since the rebuild you can buy the whole van for me if you want with the transmission and just take it out, the power steering pump is pretty much new too and so is the power steering rack and the engine is in really good shape

I understand the Odyssey and Pilot suffer from premature trans failure. What exactly causes it and how do you prevent it? I have a 2000 Odyssey with 97k Miles.

Heat! Change fluid often! You can only drain 3 quarts out with each change! You need to drive for a while so fluid mixes with old fluid then do it two more times! I put an air oil cooler in front of the radiator which should help reduce fluid temperature! Also added a transmission filter (External) to the return fluid air cooler! 12 bucks on Ebay! Cooler was 15 bucks on Ebay! This transmission has one internal filter which can only be changed at overhaul time! There is another external filter which looks like a mini oil filter (spin on type) but very hard to get to! It is over 100 bucks at Honda dealer! It is about 50 bucks on Ebay. I just decided to add an external filter which I can change once a year! I located the filter in front of battery on return line to transmission cooler. Will all this help? Hope so! Also get a bottle of LubeGuard (red bottle) and add! It reduces transmission fluid temperatures during operation! This Odyssey weighs 5700 pounds empty! Very heavy van! Transmission has to work hard all the time! What will kill this transmission is put 8 people in it with luggage and go down the road during a 90 plus temperature day and then pull up some mountains and your tranny will probably wipe out! Travel at night if you can! James
