How to replace the transmission axle seal on a Honda HS522 HS622 HSS622 snowblower

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A video detailing the procedures needed to replace the transmission axle shaft seal on a Honda HS622 snowblower. The procedures are likely the same for sister models of Hondas such as the HSS622 and the HS522. I also outline how to drain and refill the transmission oil. Draining the transmission makes for a much cleaner repair job because oil won't be leaking everywhere and it's a great time to put fresh oil into your transmission case.
00:00 - Intro
00:27 - What’s wrong?
01:03 - Shut off the fuel and burn off remaining fuel in carburetor
01:37 - Raise snowblower off ground
01:55 - Drain transmission oil
02:59 - Put snowblower into service position
03:30 - Disassemble drive system
05:22 - Remove corrosion
06:04 - Remove seal
07:26 - Seal installation
08:59 - Re-install drive system
10:57 - Refill transmission oil
11:35 - Test drive!

Great video. Thank you for all the snowblower videos. Im from the states and Honda blowers are not very popular here. I have owned many of them and my latest is the hs 622. By far the best design in my opinion. It comes in a small package but packs a punch. Honda dealers in the states no longer sell the hs622. Only the bigger models are available here. Keep up the great vids. Take care

Glad you liked the video. The 622 is a popular "urban" model for smaller city homes. The 622 has tackled a lot of wild dumps of snow in my neck of the woods and while it has faltered on a me a few times that a larger 2 stage would've suffered the same problems as slush and wet snow is really hard to throw. My only gripe with the 622 is the lack of a hydrostatic drive transmission on it. The gearing on this unit is abysmally slow and it would have benefitted HUGE from a 3rd high speed gear. I do somewhat understand WHY Honda geared it the way they did because the unit is limited to 6 HP and thus there is only so such power available to move and throw snow. Move too fast and the blower is going to bog down or break. But the 622's saving grace is also the simplicity of its design and the fact that it doesn't use belts but a dry clutch system akin to the BBC clutch on their lawnmowers. Maybe it's a great design or maybe its not. The other thing that I find odd with the 622 is that some units came with a console panel with a built in light while units like mine had nothing and the light was an add on accessory (so bizarre). All in all, I love my 622 and to think that I once sold it and bought it back the next day from the person that I sold it to tells you how much I love this unit.

I also found oil puddle under my snow blower and it's a continuous leak. Hopefully it's not a TRANSMISSION CASE gasket. I will order just in case. your video tutorial was very helpful. I will replace both axle seals then and change oils before we get real snow. on the ground. ❄❄❄❄

This is only specific to the 622. axle seals that is. the other Honda's do not have these. There are seals on the hydrostatic transmission but that is a whole different procedure.

Hi @Jackle8964 I actually was going to resplice this video to just show how to change the tranny oil so that my viewers don't have to go through the agonizing pain of having to watch the axle seal replacement process. I'm glad you found MY video and found it useful!

This is an outstanding video that addresses the repair process quite well. Thanks so much for taking the time to share this. Is it safe to change from standard engine oil to synthetic if you've been using the conventional oil for a while? Once I switch to synthetic (assuming it's safe) I don't plan on ever switching back because I know that's a bit of a problem but want to confirm/deny whether or not it's safe to switch to synthetic after using conventional oil. Anyone? Thanks again for the video. Very timely since I noticed a seal leaking this morning after 1.5 feet of snowfall

Glad you liked the video! There is actually no issues switching back and forth between synthetic and conventional oil b/c ultimately the oils must meet modern day "oil specs" for film shear strength and so on. Given the low cost of synthetic oil there there isn't much of a reason to use conventional anymore since the surface "adhesion" of synthetic and extreme cold flow characteristics is simply better. The gears in this tranny sit in the oil so there isn't an oil pump or anything to circulate the oil around. Splash lubrication only. That being said, good luck on the seal repair and have fun with your little HS622. It's such a fabulous machine! I finally got 8cms of snow the other day and was able to take out my new HSS724 out to try and compare it against the HS622. If you want to see the video, subscribe to the channel for new video notifications or come back in a few days to see it :)

As a mechanic of 40 years experience working on Honda snowblowers, this procedure does not apply to larger units on the right sub transmission side as the transmission has to be totally disassembled to get the axel seal replaced.Totally more involved process.

If you did this without a camera, and the machine was a bit older(rust etc), how long would this whole prosess take do you think?

Even with rust it would only be the shaft being rusty and you could remove that with some sandpaper before yanking the seal. I ended up doing the other seal two weeks later and legit took me a whole whopping 10 minutes. So if you were super careful and the track bolts were rusted I’d say maybe 1 hour max? Just use a good penetrating lube on the track securing nuts (kroil/liquid wrench/PB blaster and not WD-40 because it sucks). Spray lots on them let it soak for a few hours or overnight. Break the nut free and soak again. Have some new cotter pins ready as yours might be falling apart and you’d be set. Easy peasy.

Good video sir. We produce LEDs for auto. I was wondering if you are open to doing any product review. If so Can we explore an opportunity to do a review on our LED replacements?
