How to Replace the Serpentine Belt & Tensioner on a Jeep Patriot
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I've done this job a few times, and I still don't like it. My 2015 Jeep Patriot was making a squeaky racket from the belt drive, so I changed it all with a kit from @rockauto. The squeaking was likely only from one of the idlers, but nearing 200000 km (oh yeah, I'm Canadian lol), I decided to just change all the things!
Shout-out to my pal @1 and to the inspiring @strongsgarage!
Cheers!I

That is why all drive lines should be front to back, like God intended. I'll be waiting for the tractor show!

Your comments on engineers is something I think every mechanic has said ( some of us more vehemently than others ) about the way things ( not just vehicles ) are designed. I’ve often said that engineers are just failed artists . On another note Shop Kat, safety is paramount. You relied on that floor jack to support the Jeep while you worked under it. Tsk tsk tsk. Jack stands anytime you need to get under a vehicle. Be well , stay safe and thanks for sharing.👍👍🇨🇦

You're not the only one who has mentioned the lack of jack stand! You are right; unfortunately it was a late-night tired-brain oversight...which is exactly the sort of situation that'll bite a guy. My bad! Thanks for your support, Dan!

Gotta love front wheel drive stuff. I just replaced the subframe on a compass because it was so rotted out not to long ago. Fun times.

Ugh, not an uncommon failure either, unfortunately. My rear subframe was replaced with a used part after a collision a few years ago; sadly the "new" part doesn't look very good.

Wow, I was thinking you were going to put a breaker bar on the tensioner and thread on the new belt. Heck of a job might be the last time, hopefully. Much easier to put a belt on a stationary engine. Enjoy the tractor show

After u put tensioner pulley n assembly in do u do anything with pin?
@ShopKatIndustries
Жыл бұрын
Yes! Sorry if I missed that in the video. Once your tensioner is in place, and the belt is routed, you can use pliers to yank that pin out, and it will apply the tension to the belt. I hope that helps!
Hey from Edmonton! Awesome video, will help me a lot. 2016 Patriot. Replaced alternator, battery, this belt, checked all connections. Still not running proper. Another diagnosis at the GM place. They said PCM. Replaced it. New belt got shredded and fell off right after I get it back, telling me to replace the belt and tensioner system. Hope it works! Any advice or input on the matter would be hugely appreciated! Thanks dude. All the best

Wow! With the belt self-destructing so quickly, and since it's a new alternator, maybe there's a bad idler pulley and it's kicking the belt off? And thanks so much for watching!
TLDR: lefty loosey on that bolt will not loosen the bolt, just the tension on the belt. This is hilarious 😅 I watched your exact video because I broke down on the side of the road and had trouble with the tensioner. I had to replace that pulley (I didn't do the whole assembly) but I was cranking on it in the "lefty loosey" direction...about 3:45 you say that you want to crank on it and hope the bolt doesn't come loose, however last night I learned: those are reverse threads. It took me an hour and 50 different methods to tighten that bolt before I come across your video and thought "IM TRYING"...Then I realized: those are reverse threads because lefty loosey is for the tension on the belt, so if lefty loosey also loosened the bolt, it would have a chance of snapping back after coming loose.....how did I not figure this out in less than an hour?? 😅
@ShopKatIndustries

Haha!!! Good to know!! I think somewhere along the line I had a jobber part that had normal threads and that's where I got it in my head, or maybe the bolt was loose and I felt it move and thought "Uh-oh!" Anyway now we can tackle the job with a little more confidence and a little more knowledge. Good stuff, cheers!
2011 Jeep Patriot: About to go through this journey. One idler and Perhaps a Tensioner are making a noise (Thank goodness my local Bosch mech is a Friend and used his stethoscope for free) . Still not sure if it is dry idler and tensioner bearings or full replacement is required of both??? Does anyone know if you can remove the seal, then add grease?
@ShopKatIndustries
Жыл бұрын
You probably could do so, but I would consider it temporary. If they've been running dry and are making noise, then the wear and tear has begun and grease will only slow the wearing down but not stop it.
Question: what were the exact size extender did you use in that too bolt?
@ShopKatIndustries
Жыл бұрын
Oh man, I can't remember for sure! I think I used a 3" extension, then a 3/8" to 1/4" adapter, and then a 1/4" drive 13mm socket, because my standard depth 3/8" dr 13mm socket was a little short, but my 13mm deep socket was too long. I've noticed a big difference in the length of deep sockets (even within two sets from the same manufacturer but the newer set is shorter) so your results may vary, and might require some experimentation! It's too bad; with an extra inch of clearance to the engine bay side wall all that trouble could be avoided.

I tried Strong's Garage and decided it wasn't junky enough, so you beat them by a mile. I can't learn from their mistakes if they don't make any. And speaking of engineers, it sounds to me like the tensioner spring is not strong enough, which would be a design error that might have been universally duplicated by the aftermarket. Have you tried belt dressings? and maybe off label adhesives used as belt dressings? Can you think of any way to increase the spring tension a bit?
@ShopKatIndustries
Жыл бұрын
Haha, I appreciate that!! In actuality the belt looked to be in really good condition, if a little stretched. If anything I was concerned the tensioner might have a little too much tension, when I put the new belt on! I believe it was one of the idlers squeaking. I could've changed only the idler, but this is a job I've only done for the second time on THIS Patriot in 7 years, so I don't mind doing the whole thing. Especially since it's relatively inexpensive, and this is my daily.

The fact that engineers are designing vehicle's today, with the intention to make it almost impossible for the average person to do some of their own repairs to save a little money? Is clearly gotten out of hand? Enough already.

That's one of the things I DO like about the Patriot...it's still relatively accessible for DIY repairs. Not like vehicles used to be, but compared to some of the rolling computers we call cars now, for sure. My lil Jeep is getting kind of tired now, and I don't look forward to the day I have to replace it...cheers!
