How To Replace The Electric Water Pump And Thermostat On A 2006-2013 BMW 335i

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Brian Eslick from How to Automotive takes you step-by step through the process of replacing the electric water pump and thermostat on a 2006-2013 BMW 335i. N54 E90.

PROCEDURE:
1) Safely and properly raise and support the front of the vehicle. This repair task can be performed with the vehicle on jack-stands or using drive-on ramps.
2) Remove the forward under-chassis splash panel.
3) Disconnect the power steering cooler hose assembly mount on the passenger side and move the hoses rearward and toward the driver side. Use a piece of wire or a cable tie to hold the hose assembly out of the way.
4) Remove the two mounting nuts on each swaybar mount and lower the swaybar. Move the bar toward the rear of the vehicle and tie it up with a section of wire or a cable tie.
5) Remove the water pump harness plug wiring connector plug.
6) Place the coolant catch pan under the water pump. Using the flexible hose clamp driver, loosen the hose clamp on the thermostat to water pump hose (the nipple that is facing the rear of the vehicle) and carefully pull the hose off the water pump inlet nipple. This will drain most of the coolant that is in the water pump, thermostat and local hoses.
7) Use the flex driver to loosen the water pump outlet (supply) hose. The hose nipple points toward the passenger side and is above and to the rear of the thermostat (look at the new water pump to help locate the nipple and hose). We cannot remove the hose as it is solidly mounted. We will pull the water pump from the hose, in step # 13.
8) Remove the two lower water pump mounting bolts, using an E12 Torx socket.
9) Place the coolant drain pan under the forward end of the thermostat and water pump. Disconnect the radiator to thermostat hose (large plastic hose elbow at the forward end of the thermostat) by pulling out the locking wire on the quick disconnect fitting and pulling the fitting off of the thermostat nipple. Allow the coolant to drain.
10) Remove the two thermostat mounting bolts.
11) Pull the ground cable from the mounting clip that is affixed to the water pump rib, just forward of the upper water pump mounting bolt. Look at the new pump and use a light to locate the ground cable and the clip. Pull the cable out of the clip and push the clip off the rib (toward the passenger side), using a long screw driver

I am not a machinist, but I am a Auto Mech..Automotive Technician. I would like to point out that when referring to fastener size you are to refer to the Diameter of the fastener ID or OD, NOT the size of the of the tool to tighten said fastener. Using torque specs and using the "Wrench size" for torque will result in over torque and possibly (in my case when i was 13) Snapping head bolts on my RD350. Other than that I like your technique and will remember this for monday when i have to do a WP on a 335i.

TOP BOLT TIP: Use a normal 10mm wrench from the front. Remove the fan and you can easily reach the bolt. I fought that stupid bolt for hours, the reciprocating saw and dynamite came to mind, then i spent 10 munites to remove the fan, and it was done in minutes.

Thank you for the great and helpful video! The time and work it takes to make these isn't as simple as we often assume it is when watching them. On a side note FYI they didn't actually make the 335 models in 2006 only the 325i 330Ci 320I etc. But not the turbo model until 2007.

Actually the video is spot on other than one important piece of information. This being an electric water pump there is a coolant bleeding process that has to be completed or you will 100% have continued air pockets in your coolant system ask anyone that regularly works on newer style electric water pump bmws. Just look up bmw 3 series electric water pump coolant bleeding here on KZread it’s super simple and requires no scan tool

Thanks for excellent video. I really want to get the alum bolt torquing correct. I follow what you indicate, but watched another very good video with a similar torque recommendation but they did not follow with the additional quarter turn. I have also noticed that there may have been a change on the pump not to include the rubber isolators in the three bolt holes. Not sure if the one you used has those isolators or not. I am wondering if that may have something to do with whether to apply that additional 1/4 bolt turn. Can you provide any additional guidance?

I have bleed the system with new bow coolant and my fan won't start after running 12-15min. I've checked the top hose which is pretty hot and the lower one between the radiator and thermostat is cold. Any pointers to look for? Can I check a fuse or something? No error codes when I put a scan tool. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. thx

Jose Figueroa if the car is not getting over halfway on the gauge. Or if your car doesn’t have a garage he may have to drive it to get it up to temp. Since there was an accident I would try spinning the fans by hand to make sure they’re not binding. It also require a scan tool to check operation of the fans. If the thermostat doesn’t open up it won’t turn the fans on either.

Just picked up an 08 335i and service records show pump was replaced 12,000 miles ago. Took it to the dealer for some recall work and they recommended a new pump. I can see that is it slowly dripping coolant. My question is it possible that it could just be a loose or worn hose that is connected to the water pump itself that is causing the leak? Does anyone know where the weep hole is located on the pump itself so I can see if it is in fact leaking from the pump? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

It seems to me that this water pump is more prone to failure. Why is it half plastic? I think on 328i RWD it is all aluminum. Not sure if the one on 328i RWD breaks as often as the one on 335i?

I’m getting a p0117 and 118 which is engine temp sensor. I’ve replaced the upper engine temp sensor so I’m assuming the temp sensor in the thermostat or the thermostat itself must be bad. Your thoughts please.

UberDude yes most likely the thermostat is not operating for the sensor in it. I've also seen the water pump go bad and cause the same codes.

Crazy thing, I replaced the thermostat and it still didn’t work. I rechecked the engine temperature sensor with a multimeter and realized it wasn’t working. So, I put the old one back on and it worked perfectly. By the way, you forgot to mention how much swearing and cursing it takes to get the top bolt back in.😊

thanks for that video. I had the orange temp light come on followed by the red warning light, it went into limp mode and shut off. I checked the motor it was not even that hot. I started it about 30 seconds after and it was fine, drove it home about 30 kms, no warning light, normal temp, no issues. My questions are; 1. could that be a water pump/thermostat issue? 2. If you have no codes and you remove the pump/thermostat for replacement, will you still need to attach a diagnostic scanner, as its a new pump/thermostat?

Are bad water pumps only on 335 and 535 or they go bad on 328i as well (year 2008). I read somewhere that mostly they go bad on 335 and 535 because of some plastic parts.
