How to replace the bonnet lock on a MK7 Ford Transit.

If your bonnet lock breaks on your MK7 Ford Transit, there is no way to open it, unless you remove and replace the lock. This happened to me, so follow along as I show you how to do it. I tried to drill out the mounts from the front. Don’t make my mistakes as I show you how I did it in the end.

I've just ordered an after market replacement latch from ebay but I will use my front existing key part as that key is for my ignition aswell. The problem with mine is when its closed and locked down there is alot of play and movement and I can lift up the bonnet about half an inch so I'm hoping the new part resolves this. I'm grateful for your video and will be watching again while I'm fitting my part. Thank you 👍

It's possible to dismantle and 're-key' the new lock to suit your old key by switching the discs. There are only 6 discs and 4 different shaped discs to suit the 4 different possible cuts on the key and the 'wafers' between them which is what it looked like was picked up from the floor in this video.

Before drilling out try a new key! Had the same problem with a 2011 transit. Got a new key cut & Ta Dah bonnet open. Key cut at Timpsons (Braehead -John) Ignition / key wears with use. Bonnet not opened often therefore lock not worn down - ignition key eventually doesn't work

I tried that. In my case, the lock was worn. It isn’t the actual mechanism, but the lock ‘protection’ discs that go bad. When they’re gone, the lock works perfectly with a screwdriver, but that isn’t secure. The transit ignition switch is similar. It’s isn’t the actual key mechanism but the connector that attaches to it that is the weak link.

I'm going to try to do this on Thursday so thank you for the video. I'm sure it's obvious to everyone but once the new plate and lock are together how do you put back in position?. It fell out when removing so do I reposition it from under the van? Or is there space radiator side.? Hope that question makes sense. Thanks agaiin

Glad the video helped. It’s a bit fiddly to be sure, but I managed to squeeze the new one in place from the top in front of radiator. I did have to wedge a gap as didn’t take all the grille etc off. Take your time and you should figure it out ok.

Drilling it out is difficult. There are washer type things inside. I managed to drill out two or three, then I used a screwdriver to prise out the rest. Use a bigger drill bit to make this easier.

What size drill bit did you use? Bet you've got to be careful you don't drill too deep ? I've got this to do on mine

I can’t remember what size it was. I just put one in that was pretty much the same size as the hole. I do Remember I tried a couple. You won’t go deep. The washers just need to come out so that you can get a flat bladed screwdriver into the slots at the bottom. The metal is quite hard at the bottom so you shouldn’t damage that bit.

@@shoestringmotoring. Hi . Mine opens fine but I have to slam it down really hard….too hard …to engage the lock. I noticed there were slotted holes in the mountings. I suspect the whole lock needs to be raised on the slotted holes….any tips …ie do you think that will make it as easy as yours , to lock closed ? Thanks.

@@californiadreamin8423 it certainly sounds like yours isn’t aligned correctly so moving it about via the slots with bolts loosened would certainly help

@@shoestringmotoring Job done. The hardest part of the job was removing the 2 torx screws either side by the headlights. It’s not the original lock. The left hand nut….you had to use some from your treasure chest…was finger tight !! Slackened off slightly , the whole lock rotated clockwise with ease. I positioned it upwards by guesswork, then tightened it . Gently checking alignment, I closed the bonnet easily and unlocked it. The right hand nut I tightened a little , but it all began spinning . I tightened the left nut again , to be sure and now it’s all back together. I reckon when it was changed , the whole top cross member was removed , lock included, because the outer torx had never been removed. Thanks again.
