Thank you for the great video! Saved a lot of money because of it. One helpful tip: I was having trouble getting the new tube to line up with the two t30 back plate/linkage holes. I put the keys back in the ignition and that allowed me to turn the new tube into the right position.

At 5:30 in the video it is way easier to pop the shifter cable off the pivot and remove the shifter tube with the pivot ball arm still attached by those 2 torx screws and remove them out of the vehicle. I have done it both ways. Just swap the arm to the new tube and re- attach the cable onto the pivot.

After having had worked at 4 different Ford dealships (1 Lincoln/Mercury) in 2 different states, its hard to imagine I had never did this job turning wrenches for over 40 years... This is an excellent video and paced to allow even a shade tree mechanic , without fear, to install this. At 73 and retired for 17 years, I commend you for this video.

I knew it would take me more than 15 mins like in the video, however, without the video, I had to watch several times because I got confused, I would've been firing up the torch! With the video, I got the job done in about 3 hours.

My repair went pretty much as explained in the video. Thanks so much for the very helpful instructions. Here are a few key points that really made a difference: 1. Disconnect the link to the transmission cable before lowering the column (easy to pop off) 2. Mark the footprint of the rear pair of column bolts to aid in re-alignment when re-assembled 3. Don’t bother removing the upper column cover until after lowering the column and be sure to re-install before re-mounting the column. That saved a lot of fussing with this plastic cover. 4. Disconnect the indicator cable early and perhaps dismount it from the column it to avoid damage when the column is lowered. Mine only had one screw and the cable was short enough to become tight before the steering wheel rested on the seat. 5. Dismounting the solenoid bracket to enable removing the tube with shifter bracket attached was a big winner 6. If the width of your hand across the knuckles when pressed against a surface, like a karate punch, is more than 3.5” you might be better off removing the entire column instead of just lowering it. Or, find an assistant with smaller hands. 7. Shift Tube Part Number: 1F1Z7212AA and Shift Tube Bushing: F3TZ7L278A fit my 1992 Aerostar

Gentlemen, I can't thank you enough for posting this video. My truck shiftier broke apart on the road (I was parked), so I had to pop off the shift cable and manually reach under to shift to get home (OMG what a challenge, glad we have e-brakes!!)... I found it really easy to put the back bracket on out of the vehicle, then pop on the shift cable, had it done in no time... so much better than having to replace an entire column, which is what the wrecking yards we selling. Drives like new... I realize this was failing for a very long time... the symptom, it would not shift to 1st gear for quite some time. So glad I searched youtube and found you - mucho thanks.

LOVE you how tos. While i Always buy from you, my local auto had it in stock so i bought from them. After spending HOURS just try to get the upper clamshell off i put a camera in. Son of a gun. The previous owner had used Gorilla Glue on the upper because the tabs broke off. Then he ground the screws off and glued them in. I finally pried it off and was back to a 30 minute job. Not only was the shaft cracked the plates were as well.. Grrr.

This is a well made how to video, thank you. My only problem in putting it back together was the interlock; probably because I installed the handle while it was out. After 45 min. I finally thought that with the handle and the installed catch for the interlock was now spring loaded. and that little movement was holding me off. I suggest in looking back, a comment about the installation of the handle after the interlock is installed, would save someone else some frustration. I went into this thing knowing nothing about the mechanism of the gear shifting. I realize there is much more to learn. In all it was a good experience. Not at the time, but looking back. All is good, it shifts like it 's supposed to. Thanks.

That step at 8:25 on of bolting the plate to end of tube sucked.. Apparently this was my issue whomever last worked on the truck.. '98 Ranger XLT 4.0 4wd .. off-road package.. DID NOT have any type thread seal on those 2 back torx screws and they worked their way.. say 1/4 of bolt end showing inside the thread.. so 5-10 full turns of BOTH screws and pop they were out.. saved me $50+labor... took me 4 hours by myself but i am a big guy and harder for me to squeeze in there.. plus had to keep runnin for tools... but was not as hard as i thought it would be apppreciate the VID.... NOTE to OTHERS:: 13mm DEEP WELL on 3/8 ratchet short n long extensions.. ... #30 torx socket/wrench.. long skinny philips.. small tap hammer.. the 7 n 8 mm for dash bolts/screws.. small flat head screwdriver and pair of pliers is all you need for this.. IF everything goes right.. i lost half hour to an hour because my torx set an deep wells were in wife's truck from last project.. so 3 hours milking it.. for first go round.. and watch them first 2 carrier bolts closest to steering wheel ...the stud came out on mine that was more fun..

Great vid! Very informative and extremely helpful. This instructional video helped my save a bunch of cash on labor. Suggested step below. One suggestion I would have. When going after the nigh impossible T30 bolts on the backside of the shift tube. Disconnect the shifter cable and remove the tube with bracket attached. The remove the bracket from the shift tube body. Reinstall in the reverse order.

Mine finally went belly up after 24 years and 85,000 miles. I bought the full kit and spare bushings / shifter pin expecting the worst but it was just the bushings. Mostly painless BUT I pulled a rookie mistake. I put it 90% back together and tried the shifter. Didn't budge so I took it apart again and everything looked and felt fine. Wow, what am I missing? DUH, where are my keys? Wont shift unless the key is turned to ON. Next, I spent an hour looking for my keys. This is why I am NOT a professional mechanic and rely on you guys. (Next time I lose my keys I'll call the support line. You folks will find them faster than I can)

FYI was exact info and video for my 2004 ford sport trac. Your video made it happen. My main issue was a broken bolt in the very back. One thing I will say. It's much easier to leave the bracket in the back attached to the shifter tube. Just dis link the cable and red cable for the park marker to remove it. Easy bolt access for the end two bolts that retain the end spring when removed as a whole part.

THE BEST how to video on this subject! I have my steering column opened up...still haven't determined if the shift tube or plunger is causing my shift problem.... it might be my cable? I need to isolate the cable from the shift tube to see where the issue is I guess. I popped the cable off the lever on the tranny.... lever moves fine, so it's not that.

I had trouble aligning the shifter tube until I reached back and shifted it by hand. What do you think I did wrong? I was not able to put it in park so when I started working on it I had it in neutral, then putting it back together I shifted by hand in order to make the shifter tube to sit in the right the place. So I just snagged a 95 crew cab f350 @ the auction - my bro needed to use the truck a few hrs later he called me, the truck shifter has park and reverse, but no forward gears. Basically feels like there's nothing for forward gears... It happened at the pump when he was getting gas, and he said when he went to leave he heard something in the shifter snap when he pulled the shifter into drive.....SO Thanks Again 1A Auto after watching this video, I'd be willing to bet it's a broken shifter tube... CHALK UP ANOTHER SAVE FROM THE AWESOME GUYS A 1A AUTO (Ya think if I showed him this video he would fix it for me?) NOT LIKELY....

When I was trying line up the new shifter I had to lift up the steering console to make it fit. So if anybody has an issue try that. I felt so stupid trying the same thing for 15 minutes. The people who owned the vehicle before left this my vehicle a mess. It was missing the metal sheet underneath the plastic cover and one of the 2 bolts that hold the shifter in place.

Ok, so after buttering you up like that (lol) I did this job just today. My 2009 E 250 doesn't have the red spring loaded wire you connected for the gear indicator. The instrament panel is all wired. So the gear indicator lights up rather then an arm or pin. All my warning icons lite up while I was driving, and the tac and MPH fell to Zero. Couldn't start it after shutting it off, No cranking of the starter, I jumped it, but the engine never turn on. I'm going to try replacing the ignition switch. I hope it works.

Hey there. I recently replaced my shift tube on my 03 Ford Ranger XLT and it went well, thank you for the tutorial. My only issue now is when I use the vehicle, my key sticks in the ignition. Sometimes I can get it out, other times, I cannot. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Before I made the repair, my key never got stuck. Thanks

I have everything together but shifting is really loose and weird I made sure everything was tight and it won’t start either. I’m not sure where I went wrong, is it possible to have the tube at like an angle or soemthing and that would mess it up?
