    Thank-you so much for your helpful videos! My grandmother was a master seamstress in Boston. She could sew (with or without patterns), take off, put on and/or replace anything when it came to sewing. I am not that way. Just starting out and so far, trying to not sew my fingers together. This video gave me enough courage to replace the broken snaps on my cape! Again, Thank-you! Two thumbs up, fav'd and subscribed.

    Thanks! I'm teaching myself to hand sew and embroider like found on 1800's dresses and coats. So far, my fingers are still intact. You're right. My grandma was bad ass, but she didn't know it. She could just look at a coat in the windows of say, Filene’s, Newmark's or Jordan Marsh. Study it carefully. Go home and copy the coat exactly without a pattern. Holy Mother Of Puppies! WAWAK ROCKS! I set up an account there and plan to buy a lot!. I've built enough courage to buy the snaps and the tools needed for my cape. When my mom passed, I got my cape I had lent her back. For some Brain-Fart reason, the nursing home laundry people had removed all the snaps and replaced them with Velcro. Needless to say I was mad as hell! :)

    The best hammer for striking a punch is a Ball peen hammer. They come in different oz so the weight will give you more downward force for different levels of jobs. 16 oz should be enough for snaps but 24 oz might do it in one strike. I hope this helps and thank you for the video. 🙏

    Great video! I have a question though. I have many baseball satin jackets. The snaps already lost they’re color and need to be changed, but my issue is that type of fabric is probably very easy to rip or cut or damage bc it doesn’t any resistance to pull or pushing the snaps around I imagine, so would you recommend me to find someone to do it or do you think i could try it by myself? Thank you so much!

  • @TailorItYourself

    @TailorItYourself

    I think that's a question for you to answer. How comfortable do you feel with it? If the snap is functioning properly and you just want to change the color, maybe look into getting some nail polish to touch up the color instead of replacing the snaps.

    Bought a jacket with a busted snap. It was half priced, so figured I would buy it anyway and fix it with the provided parts. Now I see I don't have the tools, plus the snap hole is only part way through the winter coat, so would require ripping stitches and resewing them after finished. Good to see how to do it though!

  • @TailorItYourself

    @TailorItYourself

    Yes, I think that should work as long as the area you're adding the snap to isn't too thick. If it's too thick there may not be enough length on the parts to properly lock together when you hammer them.

    Not that I'm aware of! You'll need something that can get in between the two pieces and separate them without damaging the fabric. So if you can think of something else I'd be interested to see what you find.

    If I am adding a liner to a jacket, do I want to pre punch a hole and if so, is there a special tool for that?

  • @TailorItYourself

    Any time you're adding a snap where there wasn't before you'll need to punch a hole through the fabric to make room for the hardware. You can do it with a sharp scissors if you're careful, but otherwise you can buy a rotary punch at any hardware store that will give you a few size holes to choose from.

    Hi, I have a question. My jacket has metal spring caps, it's the last button on the bottom, it's male spring cap is fine, and it's only the female spring cap that broke out, and some of the fabric is gone too, but it doesn't have a button on the exterior, just the fabric that it's made out of. Is it possible that you replace the female spring cap, and repair the fabric that was lost? Thank you.

    There is a button part, it's just in between the layers of the placket. You'll need to open that up, repair the fabric, reinstall a new snap, and then close the placket. Or you could just do it quick and dirty and put the new snap through the placket, but the button portion of the snap will be visible on the outside of the jacket.

    @@TailorItYourself Thank you for the advice! However, my jacket doesn't have any visible buttons on the exterior, that's why I'm wondering if you can repair the button from the interior; without having to put a button on the exterior.

    You'll need to do a small repair of the area before installing a new snap. Find a matching thread color, and either use a sewing machine to stitch back and forth over the area to reinforce it, or hand sew your fabric together as best you can.
