Great video to show the process. I'd like to add a couple tips though. I have done this several times, owning many XCs, about a dozen 70 and five xc90, from these generations. 1st Tip: You are gonna want to get a wire brush on a drill, and grind out the ball joint holes. There's no need to fight the threading they put in there. Grinding it/Sanding it just slightly will help it go in easier. 2nd Tip: You should really REMOVE the upper STRUT BOLT, and loosen the lower one, so that your whole assembly shifts, and you can fit the ball joint screw easily into the lower control arm. If you don't do this, you'll fight this like a war! 3rd Tip: DO NOT put the axel nut in before squaring everything up. Put Axle nut in last! I have popped apart old CV axle joints trying to do this job in the way this video does it, and it doesn't always work. Like you say the lady in this video hammer the screw into the control arm funnel... its not that easy! it will set you way back if you break parts in this job. When you are in your drive way, this job is MUCH HARDER than this video makes it look.... Unless you take my advice. Grind out ball joint hole/ Remove Upper Strut bolt/ Wait to put Axle nut in last. And follow these instructions and you'll be golden! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

REMOVE UPPER STRUT NOT LOWER.....GENIUSSS. I was dyinggggg trying to get ball joint bolt back in place, holy hell. On Driveway, lower back dead. Somehow I did the other side 8 months ago and I don't remember a damn thing - must have blacked out.

my torn boot will need some love in the spring since i couldn't get the control arm part to separate (north east rust) while doing the pass side baring. going to be fun but comments like this make the job go better ! 10 min video and 2 hours' worth of comment and just 1 tip make it all go so much easier!

The vertical arm bolt (rear big one) is only 75 ft-lb (105 Nm) + 90 degrees however that's for a new bolt (stretch type). The two front ones are 45 ft-lb (65Nm) and 90 deg (for new bolt). If you reuse the old bolts, you may want to reduce (or skip) the degrees rotation. You don't need to remove the ball joint that way, it's way too difficult (unless you are also replacing it, the original ones last quite long). Just turn the bj nut a little to break it loose, clean well the threads, clean well the torx hole, then use the torx to lock the stud and remove the nut. Make sure to remove the axle bolt and push back the axle, never pull on the outer CV joint. On my S60 with 5 speed auto Aisin, the inner arm bolts are impossible to reach unless you lift a bit the trans/engine, and even so I had to use a high quality 3/8 drive and wrenches because the 1/2 wouldn't fit. I suggest you try and inspect the side arm bolts, these can rust and get thin. When putting in place the new arms, people have a lot of troubles pressing them down to pass the bj stud because the new bushings are very stiff. Camera man could have helped you at 19:30. Other people like to pull down the arm using a big strap. The steering stop bolts snap very easily. Worth doing the alignment too

Great video. IMPORTANT NOTE: sometime in the middle of 2007, there was a transition from aluminum to steel control arms. Aluminum ones used ball joints with cones on each end (like in the video). Steel control arms used ball joints without the cones. So, ball joints are not compatible. I do not know if you can technically fit steel arms with the new type of ball joints on older models to replace aluminum.

Good call out! You cannot mix and match the steel and aluminum parts as they aren't compatible. Make sure to get the correct parts for your model year, folks!

Excellent video as always, clear, not rushed and very well made. I've tackled a few simple jobs thanks to videos like this and the control arm is next on the list. I was a litle concerned knocking the axle out but the video makes it look somewhat straight forward, many thanks, first class!

Wicked informative, complete with torque specs. Still not convinced the axle bolt was necessary, but I guess it’s safer than breaking one

Hi thanks for the great vid. Did mine today here in UK with axle stands. The most difficult part was access with a breaker bar for the 2 x front control arm bolts. Managed it using my legs and feet (offset ring spanner)and had to guess the torque. As for the BJ into socket i used a huge demolition bar. Got someone else to put weight on it while i lined up drive shaft. As far as i can tell i did not interfere with the geometry using this method and do not require alignement. Drives straight.

I will be doing this job on my S60 and S70 in the coming weeks. This tutorial video will be right next to me. THANK YOU!

Check the drive shaft is still correctly seated in the gearbox its easy to pull it out put it all back together and have no drive. Happened to me. Good video just check torque figures.

@ 4:45, ref the ball joint nut removal. Is there any reason we could not break that nut free prior to removing the ball joint bolts. It seems that the need for the double hold with the torx and open end wrench could be avoided if that nut was already cracked free a bit? Great video BTW - very helpful!

Just a warning, if you by a ball joint aftermarket, make sure the bolt has the allen head hole at the end of the bolt. If not, you'll go to tighten or loosen and the ball joint will just spin and the nut won't tighten on the bolt. This happened to me just yesterday and I had to take it all apart to replace the ball joint with one that had the allen slot at the end of the bolt. MUST HAVE!

CRAZY!!!! a 20v dewalt ( 1/2 inch )and you can take the afternoon off... no looking 2 hrs for the wrench you just put right here i know i did .... while you were wrenching i went and got lunch ,watched a movie Ooooo wait its getting dark you better get a light soon before you cant see anything ....night night !

Great Vid and love how it was explained. My only annoyance is...Well, not annoyance but the suggestion is, why not just remove the single 17mm or 18mm Lower ball joint nut? Then wedge in a ball joint fork to separate? Unless your replace the ball joint and arm aswell?

Like another said we appreciate a vid showing a glitch or a difficulty( your very very minor) or a little wishing /hopin along the way without editing it out--------generally vids convince me i can do it goes as smooth as the vid but often i have fear of trying cause invariably it doesn't and you need another tool you dont have with no way to go get it. . Why are some telling the ball joints need to be pressed in with that special presser??????---you did it just fine without .

There is a video where they use this mammoth looking tool to hammer in the ball joint. Like in this video I used a punch and a hammer and had it out in 2-3 minutes. Then reinstalled by starting the bolts just like she did, tighten them slightly, then tap back in with same punch and hammer until flush. Easy enough. No special tool needed.

There is a special tool for pressing the ball joint back in the knuckle. Not every replacement ball joint will go in as easy as the one shown here with a few hits with a drift. I had one the first time I did it, and the 100$ tool for it takes only a couple minutes and super easy. Also easier to remove knuckle from strut and work it off the car...especially when changing the arm....and faster. Or you can do it this way and struggle like she did if you want.

Wow... The most vidios i found i see the left side... Whats up with the right side? In heynes book stood that you have to rise up the engine to loosen the bolts otherweise there is no chance... Is it possible on the right side without loosen the wngine and rising up??? Thanks for a answer

Anyone who agrees should read my comment. This job isn't that hard if you follow my tips with this video. Cheers. I have done this job over a dozen times. I love my Volvos except for this design; as these bushings fail very often with these heavy vehicles.

Control arm torque- 2 front bolt bushing is 47 ftlbs and rear is 77 ftlbs?

if your having trouble like she was on getting that lower control arm bolt to go in the ball joint your axle has slipped out. Mine had slipped out like that too.

yeh I'm doing that now, ball joint will not line up at all, I'm thinking the axle must have popped loose.

stupid question, what is the indication that you need to replace this control arm?

What’s the reason for replacing the control arm? I have a 2008 XC90. It makes a clicking popping sound when I come to a stop or begin to accelerate from stop position. Tia.

In my case, I'm replacing the control arms because the bushings are shot (torn rubber) and it won't pass the annual check in that condition. Replacing the whole arm is a lot easier than trying to replace the bushings.

Do I need a wheel alignment after this?

Good vid, but never, ever, position a pry bar at the front of a bolt aperture because it's gonna snap!! have a closer look, you can see the ally flexing... ;)

Are you sure the torque specs (and units) are correct? I broke a bolt doing this

Don't attach your strut bolts until after you put your Ball joint into the socket. Then push down on control arm and slide in the strut and strut bolts.

What spray lubricant do you use?

id use pb blaster or krill oil

Is more better when u lose the ball joint nut first and then remove the spindle

DANG IT !!!!!!!! I set my torque wrench to 130 ft# for the vertical bolt and the bolt BROKE !!!! Are you sure it's not 130nM which is around 96 ft# ????????????????? I was actually tightening the upper nut too! not the bolt head under. Please advise proper torque for that bolt. (Great Videos)

Great video, but I think the torque specs are wrong. I snapped the bolt of the rear bushing... I found 65mn + 90deg on the front 2 bolts, and 105mn +90deg on the rear bolt...

In the video, the front 2 are 47 ft/lb which is 63.7 nm, same as yours. The rears was not mentioned in the video, but Peppermint in a comment said 105 nm as well. But with a new bolt, add +90 deg.

Because for us DIY mechanics her video/method shows you how to do it without it (and save $120) The tool is half the price of the pair of control arms.

That ball joint is slow installation.

I just ordered all of my parts through 1A for a full suspension replacement including control arms, ball joints, sway bars, tie rods. Is there a better order to replace these items? For example, start with struts first, control arms, ball joint, etc. Just don't want to start installing new items only to realize it would have been easier if I had started with another part.

Every bolt/ nut on my car is rusted to the point i have to use a nuke to get it loose.
