How to Replace 1MZ-FE (Toyota/Lexus 3.0 V6) Spark Plugs WITHOUT Removing the Intake Manifold!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I replace the spark plugs on a 2003 Lexus RX300; but this V6 engine, the 1MZ-FE, was offered in this vehicle from 1998-2003, and has been used in MANY different applications from the early 90s to mid 2000s. It came in a VVT-i and non-VVT-i version. You can also find the 1MZ in the:
1993-2003 Lexus ES 300
1994-2004 Toyota Avalon
2000-2003 Toyota Highlander
1997-2003 Toyota Sienna
2003-2006 Toyota Camry
1998-2003 Toyota Solara
Parts Used:
Denso Spark Plugs (set of 6): amzn.to/3BGDGmq
Dielectric Grease: (this is the size I used) amzn.to/3508KSl (but if you want smaller, one-time use) amzn.to/3se6hfQ
Anti-Seize: amzn.to/3JKMf2w
Tools Used:
Extensions: (I couldn't find the exact same ones I have, but these are all very similar)
- 1/4" locking Extension: amzn.to/3LY8ZxN
- Wobbly 3" 3/8" drive: amzn.to/33MD2Ye
- Stubby wobbly 3/8" amzn.to/3p9fNit OR amzn.to/35kHkGy
90 degree pick: amzn.to/33Iv3LB or the set: amzn.to/3Ij7OqA
GEARWRENCH stubby 3/8" 120 tooth ratchet: amzn.to/3LS7hhA (which I bought as part of this set: amzn.to/3IiID7x)
The Capri 5mm hex bit socket was from this set: amzn.to/3LNNHmu (or get it solo here: amzn.to/3LTPbeW)
The two 12mm wrenches that I used in this video were both parts of sets, but they are both killer sets, so I will link them here:
Capri Tools Super thin wrench set (metric, duh!) amzn.to/3sc0E1G
and GEARWRENCH 12-pt ratcheting wrench set: amzn.to/3sYKxnj

A shop quoted me over 2,000 for this job including 4 hours of labor consisting of removing the intake and other various parts. They also quoted about 1400 dollars worth of parts (coils and spark plugs) I came across this video and hopped on 1A auto (parts were 130 bucks) and sent it with this video and it took about an hour. I cannot thank you enough for this video you are a lifesaver!!!!!

I'm so happy I found you, and I'm going to tell you why, my daughter said the most horrible thing a few days ago, she's 14 and said, "Girls have to do girl jobs they can't be things like mechanics!!!" I'm a mechanic with 33 years under my belt and I've been trying to teach her and her sister how to take care of their own vehicles, and that was the comment I got, so lol, I'm going to show her your channel and you Faye, will show her what I already knew, Ladies can absolutely be Mechanics and ROCK at it, anything really. @@FayeHadley Thank you so much for taking the time to respond, I showed her your videos, the two that impressed her was you LSD service, because you got under a car she thought that was cool, and the Mk5 10k checks as that showed her you and sever ladies working. You inspired them both! My 20 yo (her sister) watched too and afterwards said can we go over the vehicles? I said yes. So now they are more receptive to learning. I have 4 different vehicles, a 2011 Kia soul which I'll be doing a timing belt on here soon, 14' Buick Enclave which has held up so far, 96' reg cab Ram 1500 Magnum 360, and a 78' Dodge Ramcharger with the small block LA 318 in it. Still running strong. A nice mix I think. My Dad passed a year ago and I was able to rescue the family vehicle from my evil step mother who was going to sell it. I learned how to drive and work on vehicles with Dad from that beast. Last note, my Dad's Birthday is March and Mine May, my Reg Cab Ram was manufactured in March, the Ramcharger in May. I thought that was cool especially since that LA 318 is the precursor to the Magnum. Thanks again and we're watching and love the humor, energy, and how you kick butt! My youngest said she's under a dirty car, lol yup that's where they put stuff too I said. Be well and be safe, And greetings from NC!!!

@@stellarv5689 yeah, in fact my other daughter has this thing where when I had worked on her car, and something else has broke or acting strange, she thinks it was something I did and of course not true, and so she felt I need to pay for the tire service I needed and I explained to her cars have issues they break down, they're so complex and a lot of moving parts all working together, so I took it to a shop had to pay for a tire alignment and the told my Step daughter I am never touching your car again, if you have any problems here on out you will have to take it to a shop and pay them to work on it. So as much as I'd like to help her I won't knowing she has this sticky blame. So that kid is going to experience a shop and mechanic in the wild. My other daughter has since helped a bit more on the care, she even bought a matching pair of overalls to join me when working on the cars. Thanks for the reply man be safe and be well.

I actually think it's impossible to remove the middle one on the rear bank (i.e. cylinder 3) without removing the intake plenum. The two others on that side can be removed, with a lot of cursing though! I'm referring to the 3MZ-FE (3.3L) on the '07 Toyota Highlander.

I will attempt to find a link for you, but apparently many people HAVE succeeded in doing the job (even the middle plug). According to them, NOT impossible. I hope they're right, as I am about to embark on "the quest," lol! ;-) PS. I've been putting off even trying for two years (literally) now, but finally have no choice but to dive in...

@@stevebergman6747 I'd really appreciate seeing that link. I think it is possible though on the older 1MZ-FE (The 1st gen Highlander came with this engine until it was replaced by the 3MZ-FE). As for doing the manifold job, don't sweat it. It'll go fine as long as you take time to label stuff before disassembly. Quick tip: remember to place that bracket for the vacuum valves before installing the bolts for the plastic manifold. That one usually catches me 😀.

Great video, Faye. I was particularly interested in the fact that you use anti-seize on spark plug threads. As you know, most people condemn the use of it on anything. But I've been using it on spark plugs and wheel lugs for years and have never had a problem with either of them coming loose. And when it's time to take them apart, there's never a problem separating the parts. Keep up the great work.

I started watching you, Faye, to be honest, mainly because of the the (post?)grunge look and wondering where that fit in, with you being an off beat gal in a profession that's been dominated by guys, definitely not particularly off-beat guys, except for maybe a whole crew of those hippy, underground VW mechanics in the '70s, or those good-old, wacky import specialist guys from, like, Belgium or Costa Rica or Sweden, who work on certain funky imports only and act like the work requires the precision skills and genius of a master German watchmaker....har, har. (Those guys are usually one step from the looney bin, imho, lol). But as I follow you, it's so clear you are a very good mechannic who has joy in her work and also sails her own ship anywhere she feels like in the world, so to speak, and I love it. Good for you! As one who has never taken the path most traveled in life, I can only say: Keep it up! Thinking and living outside the proverbial box can be challenging, but oh, the rewards are spectacular sometimes. I'll still be pulling out my wrenches and backyard mechanicing until the good Lord pulls in my final service warranty, but until then, I hope to be able to visit here for inspiration and plain good vibes wrapped up a side dish of kooky vibes and offbeatness. Love it. You are a pleasure to visit with. Thanks for the good work!

I love how you get those great shots of your work in those tight spaces! I lost my mechanic as he went to work for someone else out of town. I had an engine computer problem & long story shortened: locksmith said to be able to reprogram engine computer claimed I needed to go to mechanic for this problem. I did and three tows later (from them to Toyota dealer to auto electric shop) I spent $1800. Yea, the engine computer problem resolved, but they left three screws off plastic piece over the front coils, etc. Also, coincidentally car ran rough though coils and plugs changed about 20,000 miles ago! I changed front 3 coils (1 bad via reading though on a rear coil also) and plugs. On attempting 4th nearest driver side, screw to coil came up quickly and easily, but I could not get the coil out and got a cut and bruising to show my attempt to do so! Maybe being a cold engine was problematic? Maybe warming engine up before letting it cool just enough to pry the coil out of there? I love that short handled socket wrench you have! I may try getting the one out closest to passenger side to restore confidence. My wife & I have 2023 Subaru we own together but I use the old Lexus for hauling to the dump and taking off on trips where i need to leave Marie the car.

As a comment to the question: I mostly work servicing cleaning equipment. Seeing videos of people in various trades, how they work on things, what they use to do that, and how they go about it, is invaluable to my own work. I also work on my own vehicles, and those of my closest friends. A couple of them drive Toyota products, so this is good knowledge for me to glean. I think your videos show what you do, with the personality of the person that you are. It's a great channel. An awesome bonus is the 🐓 love. (An honest comment for ya)

I have a 98 Toyota camry V6 3.0 And I'm definitely dreading the back 3 spark plugs but I only have a 147000 miles the so hopefully I can get at least 200,000 miles out of them Faye. But this is definitely the video I'm gonna have on when I'm changing the spark plugs . Everyone I talked to said this job is definitely gonna be at least 800-1000 dollors. So there aint no way I'm paying that so I'm gonna do the job when time comes, and this video is coming in handy thank you again beautiful

I love your commentary, your explanation's make it easy to understand. One question when you are doing something that you can't see and only working by feel, have you tried closing your eyes? I know it sounds stupid but it works for me. It helps me focus on just working by feel.

good plan, I did this on our RX300. I put the spark plug socket on a universal joint, and it slipped right in without having to detach it to get the extension in and out. Also, the RX300 has less room to the side, so I removed the PVC hose, the vacuum lines and some of the external parts to give my hands more working room. The connectors were a bit tough to get loose after they have been in the car for perhaps 20 plus years (yes, it was finally time for new spark plugs) so I sprayed silicone lubricant on them to help me loosen the connector seal. I kind of dreaded having to remove the intake manifold, but you showed it was not too bad to work around it. no need to buy new gaskets for the intake manifold either.

Hi Faye. Nice vid. Easy concise well done. I know it's a year later, but if I can chime in, you may adopt the practice of not dropping the plugs in the bore, if you haven't already. Just a thought.
