How To Repair The Cat Sensor In The Litter-Robot 3 Open Air

Ғылым және технология

In this video, our Domestic Robots Specialists Phil and Josué teach you how you can easily replace the cat sensor in your robotic litter Litter-Robot 3 Open Air.
Cat Sensor: www.robotshop.com/products/li...
If your foot is white (and the bolt is 1 7/8'' cm) : you need to screw for the bolt to be about ~1/4" (6.35mm) from the bolt.
If your foot is black (and the bolt is 1 5/8'' cm) : you need to screw for the bolt to just be a mm from the bolt.
It's essential that you respect these directions to not crush the cat sensor.

    Thank you for the video, this has helped me replace my defunct sensor, I followed your directions in the comments on how much the bolt needed to be screwed in. I did notice (like another reviewer) that the original bolt way too tight which may of lead to the sensor failing over time.

    Thanks for the video. I did not have the plastic piece mentioned @ 1:45. I had the repair kit sent to me and all of the parts except this were inside. I also did not have the correct socket. So, a blob of plumbers putty to help hold the bolt in place and a bit of pressure to make it come through so I could start the nut, and then a pair of pliers to turn the nut while holding the bottom of the sensor did the trick. Anything would have worked to hold the bolt in place since it fits the form of the sensor pad when inserted, a wadded up damp paper towel would have worked.

    Hey everyone! I fixed my sensor issue! All I did was loosen the nut that is holding the foot onto the robot. It is installed too tightly and keeps the spring from moving when the cat enters the robot. I also took the spring out and stepped on it a few times to try to make it more flexible because it is really rigid but you might not need to do that. It is really difficult to get back in, FYI.

    I'm actually having a similar issue. I found out that my robot spring is compacted too tightly. When I move my robot it's actually wobbly not sure how to fix this yet. I suspect I need to stretch out my spring but I don't think I have the muscle for that. 🤔

    For those wondering if the cat sensor is the problem I just found that putting a 1k ohm resistor into the connector for the sensor tricks the litter robot into thinking the sensor is ok. I get the red lights right away, I think the connector or ribbon is damaged since I probed down the wire and measured around 1k ohm resistance. Putting the resistor in allows me to manually run the box while waiting on a new sensor but I may try repairing the connector to see if I can fix the existing sensor.

  • @mike6467

    @mike6467

    4 жыл бұрын

    Worth noting that this actually works. I didn't want to buy a whole new sensor and manually cycling this once or twice a day was good enough for me. Just disconnected the sensor behind the litter drawer, took the connector off, stripped the wire and threw a 1k ohm resistor in. Now the box cycles when I manually hit the button, or when it turns on (which means I could hook this up to a smart outlet and have it scheduled to turn on for long enough to complete a cycle x times per day). Thanks for the heads up Scott!

    Actually not as bad as the comments make it out to be. Just stuff a wad of toilet paper on the foot piece, just enough to hold the screw in place so that the nut can be screwed on. After the nut is attached it doesn't matter, it's locked in, now just tighten it.

The last 2 times I called the waiting que was over 50 customers before me. When I emailed, it was several days before I received and answer and their reply was a repetition of the owners manual which I explained that I already followed. I even asked to buy a sensor and was told that it was not available on line. I had to call in. Back to the 50 person que.

    Hi there. How do you know if it is the cat sensor that has gone. I've tried everything with mine. The red light is flashing and won't do anything. It's totally been cleaned, top to bottom (thought a full clean would fix the issue - nope) and there is clean litter in it just bellow the line, it's stable on laminate floors, not touching anything. What are your thoughts?

  • @RobotShopTV

    Hi, Please check your unit for the following: * The litter is above the fill line or in excess of 10lbs. * CATS has not been reset after adding weight * The waste drawer has too much weight The red blinking light indicates CATS (the cat sensor) is detecting excess weight for more than 2 minutes. To test your changes, power the unit off and then on. Allow the unit to complete the start‐up cycle and return Home with a solid blue light. Your unit is operating normally. If it continues to flash, the cat sensor will probably need to be replaced. Always press Reset after emptying the waste drawer, adding litter, or moving the unit. You can also turn the unit OFF then ON to ensure the baseline is set properly. When pressing Reset, watch for the blue light to quickly flash one time. This indicates CATS has been successfully reset. If none of the above solves the issue: 1. Remove the bonnet. 2. Remove the globe 3. Replace the bonnet 4. Press Cycle (without the globe on the unit) 5. Allow the motor to run for 5 seconds, at any point, does it stop and flash red? If no, then excess weight needs to be removed from the globe. If yes, (it blinks red), the cat sensor will need to be replaced. Let us know how it goes. With regards,

    Can you tell me if the sensor is bad or what? I have a kitten at first she only weighed 4 pounds and wouldn’t set off the sensor, she gain some weight and the sensor would activate when she entered (instant red light) then it would cycle at set time just like it’s designed to. Now recently the kitten enters the globe and is not detected. I reset by pushing the reset button I also turned the power off and back on, it started working again like it’s supposed to but now kitten is not detected and reset doesn’t make a difference, if I reach inside and put some weight on the litter the sensor will activate so is the sensor bad or is there an adjustment? I saw the adjustment video for the older robot with turning the round foot on the bottom but they said that was for that model only. I have the little robot open air, the one without the wifi, I ordered the upgrade though and installed it and it has wifi now but what do you suggest about this sensor? Thank you

  • @RobotShopTV

    @RobotShopTV

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi, The following troubleshooting should resolve the blue light blinking while the waste drawer is empty. Once resolved, the unit should consistently recognize when your cat visits and cycle accordingly. To troubleshoot the blue blinking, let's start by power cycling your unit: 1.) Leave your unit powered ON with the blue blinking light engaged & Unplug your power supply from the base 2.) Wait 10 seconds then plug the unit back in 3.) Allow the unit to complete a start‐up cycle. If the light is solid blue, the code has been successfully cleared. If the light is still blinking, let's proceed with troubleshooting. Let's empty the drawer if it has waste and reinstall the bag before proceeding. Note: If you are using a dark colored bag, always tuck it into the tabs. Video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gKybtrutm9G9j8Y.html Let's check your DFI Lenses for any obstructions: 1. Turn off the unit and Unplug the power from the base 2. Remove the Bonnet and the Globe 3. Inspect the top of the Base where the Globe usually rests. Is there any debris? Small amounts of litter are normal. Clean as needed. 4. Inside the waste opening, there are two clear "Lenses" (left and right side). Ensure there is no debris on the Lenses. Sometimes litter can fall/splash onto them. ** To clean the lenses, we recommend wiping them off with a soft damp cloth and/or glass cleaner. Do not directly spray the Base or DFI Lenses. ** 5. Replace the Globe and Bonnet. Reset the black key in the back of the unit into the pocket. 6. Plug the unit back in. If you turned the power off, you will need to power it on and press "cycle". Once the cleaning cycle is complete, the unit should be at the Home position with a Solid Blue LED on. Further Troubleshooting: 1. If the unit continues blinking blue, remove the waste drawer and press cycle. 2. Press reset 2x to abort the cycle and return the unit to home (it will level the litter). 3. If the unit goes to solid blue with the waste drawer removed, ensure there is nothing in the drawer blocking the lenses. 4. If the drawer is clear, your base needs to be repaired.

  • @RobotShopTV

    @RobotShopTV

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ashley, The sticky surface should be down and the black surface should be up. Tightening and loosening the nut is depending on the sensitivity of the sensor so the customer should tighten it normally (not super tight) then check if the robot detects all the cats or not. If not, then he can either tighten or loosen depending on the situation he has. Let us know if you have further questions. The RobotShop Team

    I did a little investigating and my litter robot kept making like a slamming noise and upside down so when I went to take it apart to clean it I noticed there’s was something in the bottom under the black rubber flooring and I finally got to it and it’s a big silver like weight idk how this happened or how to get it back in ...also I found two little magnets that I have no clue where they go

    Why does it sometimes STOP in mid-cycle with a Yellow light on? The work-around is to turn off the back on with a Reset. Then turn back on again.

    Mine will work for maybe a day then stop. Each time, i pull it apart and back the nut off, seeing if that will work. Brand new cat detector sensor and brand new Pinch detectors. Its doing my head in.

    "a mm from the bolt" -- does that mean portruding out of the bolt? Or sunken in?

  • @RobotShopTV

    Hi! If I understand well, your asking about the mm that the bolt needs to be tight? It all depends on the length of the screw. It must be adjusted so that the cat sensor remains sensitive to cat detection. Pressing the top of the base backwards, or the top of the cap backwards (if the litter box is assembled), activates the cat sensor. You should hear a click and the metal plate should not come out of its cavity. There's a forum for LR3 on our community website, it can help as well. rb1.shop/42tZP3a

    I'm with you. That instruction isn't clear, and I feel like a dummy cause no one is really asking this question. And the replies are just a repeat of the unclear instructions. They should say, tighten top nut if it detects cat when there is not, and loosen if it doesn't ever detect cat. Or visa versa. I guess I'll try one direction and see what happens.

    Hi, It is a specific component under the robot. See the video at 43 seconds, kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYCrydxsmLrNfco.html Hope this helps!

    The description on this video mixes up inches and mm until it’s utterly incomprehensible. If you’re thinking of buying as Litter Robot though… be prepared to spend half your life taking it apart and fixing/replacing components. They’re built and designed by hobbyists… to be used by hobbyists. Possible the most unreliable consumer device I’ve ever bought.

    Entirely untrue in my opinion. I have had my litter robot three for six years. I have had very very few issues. I have replaced the drawer, full indicator, and the cat sensor.

    Wrong…. Nice try attempting to save face litter robot reps. I have two units and both don’t work now in less than 2 years. I have received email “suggestions” to fix that don’t work and waste my time. Thanks for the wasted $1000 on your poorly engineered poopbox

  • 6 ай бұрын

    My experience as well that they're incredibly badly engineered. The sensors are a bad joke and to maximize profits they saved cents on them, making end users face permanent issues. Three if the four sensors had to be shorted by me to keep the device working, the third one forced me to buy a replacement for probably 50 times production cost.

    @ we have been scooping out two $500 robot litter boxes that don’t work for over a month now. Multiple correspondences with the company all to not be fixed. SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR A COMPANY THAT CARES. I am open to suggestions, couldn’t possibly be worse than the litter robot

    If you make another video, cut out the background music and go from a quickly-read script to a slower version where the tech actually walks you through what he is doing.
