HOW TO repair 2013 Audi A4 B8 Cluster Speedometer LED backlight DIY Video | Plus bad jokes

Ғылым және технология

Update Jan 2023: new link for LEDs which are not so bright and rather fit to the original brightness (feedback from someone who did the repair):
www.reichelt.de/led-smd-3528-...
In this video I repair the backlights of the cluster in my 2013 Audi A4 B8. I go through step by step how to remove the cluster, disassemble it, and replace the LEDs.
LEDs: OSW5SAS1C1AS-LM
Buy them where ever the hell you want, I'm not here to sell you stuff. You can get these on ebay, but beware they are marked up around 100x, one LED should cost around 17 cents.
Speedo part number: 8K0 920 931 J
Don't waste all of your saved money on hookers and blow, buy them for me instead: buymeacoffee.com/dmitriivanov

    I just completed this procedure for my 2013 B8.5 Premium Plus Quattro and I'm very happy with the result. I would say it is a perfect fix. This cluster was sent away to be fixed before I bought the car. The electronics shop where it was sent said they couldn't fix it. The quote had been $800 if the work had been done. I bought the LED lights from Reichelt (from the description of this video) and it cost me about $50 CAD after taxes and shipping. They look exactly the same as the old lights. I bought a soldering kit, solder wick and flux cleaner off amazon for another $50 CAD or so. The job took me several hours from start to finish. The better part of a day. I was initially worried that the LED lights were going to be too bright, because when i tested them they seemed way brighter than the ones that were coming out. However, I tested the finished product with some night driving and they dim down (via the dial in the car) to a perfect level. If you turn the dial up, they are very, very bright. Not a bad thing. When reassembling the dials, I found I actually had to remove the temperature dial and reposition it so that it rested at the coldest temperature reading. I couldn't just turn it to correctly orient it. Also it took a little thinking about how to set the hard stops on the rpm and speed dials. Make sure it cannot go past zero counter-clockwise and you should be good if you put them back to where they came out. Anyway, thanks for the video man! I'm going to send you some money as a thank you. I'll spend just a little less on the vices you mentioned but overall you saved me a bunch of dough.

    Same process, just locate the led which goes to the stick. I would just replace them all if you're anyways going to open it up, they will all fail eventually and the cluster can only tolerate so many disassemblys before it falls apart.

  • @DmitriIvanov

    @DmitriIvanov

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well, now that I did it I can tell you that the new leds which I put in are a tick brighter than the originals. I would increase the series resistance a bit to lower their brightness and likewise the current going through them, hopefully extending their life a bit. Other than that it has been perfect! :)

  • @DmitriIvanov

    @DmitriIvanov

    3 жыл бұрын

    The root cause of the failure isn't in the supporting circuitry but rather the LEDs themselves. Perhaps the entire circuit is designed a bit too close to the limits of the led and that's why they fail. But no, just replacing the LEDs will fix your issue.

    Backlight will be an LED module, probably one on either side of the lcd. Try to find the pins of it and test just the LEDs themselves with a voltmeter, dont do it with a power supply unless your current is limited. If the LEDs are ok probably it's a driver issue - just search for ICs near the LEDs but it seems you already found one which is dead. Can you read the part number from it and google it? If you find the datasheet you can figure out what to probe. Ic9945a sounds like a reference designator on the manufacturers schematic, not a part number.

    As far as problems i have 240k on mine now and honestly it's been a great car. The auxillary heater broke, a wheel bearing broke, one parking sensor broke. Just recently i noticed the timing chain cover is leaking oil which is very uncool because the motor is backwards in this car (the 3.0tdi)....means the timing chain is toward the gearbox.

    @@DmitriIvanov Thanks for your response. So i ordered 1206 resistors (correct size) as i noticed the following. 330 ohm is going to all the leds and is a different size (larger), also goes to the multicolour leds. If i replace that it will dimm everything. BUT behind the 330 ohm every 2 white leds (which i replaced) has 1 1206 resistor of 300 ohm in series. so i needed 10 of those, because i have 20 lights. I ordered 360, 390 and 470 ohm. I have now replaced them all 10 with 1206 470 ohm. I will report back with the results. Something shitty did happen, the plastic lens got scratched because i was trying to be a perfectionist by cleaning it and now i am struggeling with restoring the lens XD from the inside and out. I will report back with the results when i put the thing back together and try out the brightness in the car.

    The cluster itself was working, only the backlighting was partially not working. A broken fuse would take out the entire cluster. Also a fuse is only a symptom not the actual problem, a fuse only blows when a current higher than it's rated capacity flows through it, meaning something down the line had an issue (likely a short). Anyways, that's not relevant in this case.
