How to Remove Valve Springs (Overhead Valve Removal Tool) • Cars Simplified

This episode of Cars Simplified: Season Three reveals how to remove valve springs with a "Universal" Overhead Valve Removal Tool (Autocraft AC521 is shown in the video, but other companies make the tool as well) and different techniques that can be used, including a fast and aggressive approach.
The tool shown in the video is designed to grab on to and compress the valve spring, so that the keepers can be removed. Once the keepers are out of the way, the spring and retainer can be pulled out of the way, and the valve is free to be pulled out.
The head must be off the block to perform this properly.
Steve just used the neodymium magnet he had laying around, but you can buy one that works better for your tool.
Ending: Brumby on a road trip! Zen mode.

Great video. Just wanted to add that this is the best tool to use in tight spaces, such as when the head is still on the engine. His techniques will be the same, except you'll need compressed air blown down the spark plug hole to keep the valve in place. Also, make sure your cam is in the correct position.

Willy Garcia exactly the shit doesn’t work on real engines don’t know what engine he’s working on. I’m working on my 350 Chevy and that tool is a piece shit. The bottom of the tool needs to be curved up to stay on the spring during compression

I brought this tool today, so I could replace my valve seals. I got one off without no problem. But the second one, gave me drama. I tried to find something to place under the valve, so it could stay in place. I have to find something soft & sturdy, go up under there. So, will try again tomorrow.

You have to rotate the engine manually (wrench on crankshaft pulley bolt head) until the piston is near the bottom of its stroke in the cylinder being worked on. Take spark plug out from the cylinder, and shove in some 1/4" rope through the spark plug hole until you have about a foot of rope or so into the cylinder (letting some rope hang out of the spark plug hole), then rotate the engine manually until the piston pinches the rope in the top of the cylinder and will be holding the bottom of the valve all the way up so it won't fall down into the cylinder when you take the valve spring out.
