How To Remove Sealed Cartridge Bottom Bracket Fast! Easy! Fun!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is how I remove sealed cartridge bottom brackets. Removal in seconds. They can often be very tight, or even stuck/frozen/seized, but this method has always worked for me. And with the downward pressure, I get a good connection and am less likely to strip the notches/splines in the cup and tool. I used a Kawasaki 1/2" corded impact wrench. What's more fun than power tools? The bottom bracket tool I used was a Pedro's Bottom Bracket Socket: www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...
And yes, I am aware the frame is damaged on the chain stay, so that is why I am stripping the parts from it.

    And, who doesn't like "Fast, easy and fun"? My LBS puts a bolt and washer through the square socket hole to fasten it to the BB securely. Then crank on it with a large open end or adjustable wrench with or without a piece of pipe to get more torque on the job. I am a tree hugger, and prefer to save man made energy when I can. Besides I don't really have much use for and electric impact wrench. Thanks for the fun vid!!!

    It does work on the cartridge. The bolt and washer hold the socket splines firmly in contact with the BB slots, so that you can apply force evenly without having to manually center the socket while pulling on the breaker bar. The bolt screws into the threads for the crank arm fixing bolt.

    I don't understand why a few people posted about their concern using the impact gun to free the BB. Isn't that what an impact gun is for? Anyway, I tried it this morning to remove my BB and it worked like a charm. The sealed unit was too tight for the 1/2" drive ratchet handle and the engagement with the extractor socket was iffy... when I went to my electric impact gun it freed it up after just a few seconds of pulses on the trigger. So thanks for the tip and, if I might say, be brave and try something different. Very useful posting.

    If spindle is hollow use a rear qr to hold bb tool tight into cup. If not get a longer bolt same size as crank bolt. This will keep tool stable and impossible to slip and strip out teeth, break knuckles etc. Then turn it with a 12” crescent wrench. That impact is waaaay too powerful for a bb cup. You can do it but if youre not careful and strip teeth out have fun!! If its an old french or Italian bike , both cups are right hand threads. Meaning they BOTH loosen counterclockwise. Maybe swiss bikes are the same. Be sure before you start!!

    I would like to know how to remove an American bottom bracket which has cartridge bearings (such as the bottom bracket for classic Profile 3-piece BMX cranks). The cartridge bearings are interference-fit into the bearing cups, and the bearing cups are interference-fit into the frame's bottom bracket shell. Because the bearings are in the way, and not easily removed from the cups if you don't want to damage them, you don't have much room to get e.g., a drift punch inside there to try to pound the cup out. You can only touch the cup at a sharp angle with a drift punch. The ideal tool would be a slide hammer with an attachment that has 3 retractable claws, but I don't know if any such attachment that would fit through the bearing exists.

    Hi RJ. 2:50 can you please check what is torque of your wrench? I'm stuck with a Raleigh frame that was left outside for 15 years. I'm trying to start its non drive side cup but all methods that i normally use have failed. Torching, freezing, penet.oil etc. Already broke an adjustable wrench when i used a long pipe to have more leverage. My last method before i try hammer (neighbours complain so i do my best to avoid hammering) is to buy an impact wrench. So i'd like to know how much torque is good enough.

    @@RJTheBikeGuy Thanks a lot for the reply. I bought today an impact wrench with 450 Nm torque (slightly more than yours) and you know what? It failed! I torched the BB first and then tried the tool. It was awfully loud and neighbours slammed their windows. I had to stop immediately. Its deafening sound was enough :) I was very convienced that it would work because there're handful of videos on KZread that exact same model removes very stubborn bolts. So i had to try something else. I bought a new heavy-duty pipe wrench (it says 'american style') with 60 cm long handle and i also used another 60 cm long pipe to get more leverage. From one of your videos, i saw that you started from drive side cup. So instead of focusing on non-drive side, i tried drive side with my new wrench and it removed!!! Now the situation changed because i have more options. At least i could spray penetrating oil from inside directly to the space between the cup and frame. I continued the same method on the stubborn left side cup and after 20 min ordeal, i removed the sucker!!! Yes, it's done. Thank you RJ. I was an inch close to ditch the bike and take usable parts. But my try on drive side cup changed the game. My next challenge is to try to return the impact wrench. It seems my current living place is not for this and i dont have car. I'd like to buy Dremel instead.

  • @RJTheBikeGuy

    @RJTheBikeGuy

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@jonestizmo1872 Are you turning it the right way? Drive side is normal left hand threaded. So it removes turning it clockwise? French and Italian threading is right hand threaded and is removed by turning it counter clockwise. Being a Raleigh, it would most likely come off clockwise. I don't know if any of the high end Ralieghs came with Italian BBs. Try to get penetrating oil in there. And try it without heating.

  • @jonestizmo1872

    @jonestizmo1872

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@RJTheBikeGuy Yes, i was aware of the thread direction. The frame is aluminium and its non drive side BB cup looked as if it was welded into the frame. It was that much galvanizing? (is that correct word?). I have encountered so far quite a few stubborn BBs but this one was a nut. I will never forget it. Anyway, it's over now and i removed them without damaging frame threads and a new BB is on its way. For anybody who might read my comment in future: as shown in one of RJ's videos, use M8 bolt (depends on your specific BB. in my case it was M8) to securely attach BB remover to cup. In this way, you would avoid damaging cup teeth. I killed many cup teeths before which led me to use hack saw etc to remove cups. Using hack saw usually damaged frame thread and i have to buy more expensive BB for damaged frames. I always start removing non drive side. But if it fails, try drive side before giving up. It saved my bike today. I was done with it. As mentioned by RJ, it seems heat/cold haven't demonstrated very successful results when it comes to BB removal. And finally, unless you live in house or sound insulated place, avoid impact wrench. I read that it works in many cases and RJ demonstrates that. But its sound is difficult to bear. I tried high end, high quality pipe wrench and it did the job. Thank you again RJ.

    Hey, so I have a problem where all the slots for the teeth are stripped out, in fact some are just completely gone. The threads also seem to have locktite or something on them, they are very hard to turn. So, is there any way I can somehow get it out?

    You are probably going to have to destroy it to get it out. Maybe a dremel to cut some notches or something. Trial and error till it comes out. Good luck!

    IMO the easiest way to deal with that kind of extractor, that doesn't fit very well, is using a front axle (an 8mm one i guess, i don't remember), it fits into the bottom bracket axle internal threads, so with a nut on that axle you can fasten the extractor to the bottom bracket. Well, at least the easiest way if you don't have an impact wrench :v

    @@RJTheBikeGuy Sorry, I forgot to mention, I wasn't using this video's method (I wish I had!). Just a regular splined tool. I think my failure here was using the tool with a crescent wrench as my socket wrench is too small. I thought I'd just give it a go but managed to crack the plastic cups without much force at all. I was going in the correct direction but I obviously didn't have enough downward pressure. Any help would be appreciated! Your videos are the best.

    Park tool has a good solution: "Use a long bolt to secure the BBT-22 to the cup..." "...Use a bench vice to hold the tool. The frame becomes the lever." This way seems like a good idea as it has the least likelihood of the tool slipping and striping the cup. I'd like to see a vid of you testing this method and your thoughts? www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/bottom-bracket-service-cartridge-type#article-section-3

    Just use the long lever principle that will ALWAYS WORK. Ratchet with the right socket attached and a hollow steel or aluminium tube where you can put the handle of the ratchet in. The longer the lever the easier it will go with no damage at all. Add some WD40 few minutes before you begin.
