Remove A Tough Bottom Bracket - Body Mechanics & Leverage -- BikemanforU How-To

How to get a square taper bottom bracket out when you're about ready to give up. Free shipping www.bikemanforu.com on bike parts, tires, tools, and cycle accessories. You've removed the pedals; crank arms and the crank are gone, too. Front derailleur's been loosened and the chain is off the sprocket. You've got the right tools - the appropriately sized BBT remover, a 3/8 or 1/2 inch ratchet wrench; a length of pipe stands by to give you more leverage if needed, along with a ball hammer and chisel for any bits and pieces stuck inside the BBT shell. You have a spray bottle with BikemanforU's proprietary blend of Special Sauce (half acetone and half automatic transmission fluid) inside and a wire brush ready for cleaning. But the darn sealed cartridge BBT is stuck inside that mobile with the Memphis Blues again. Never fear. There's "No such thing as a tough bottom bracket," says KZread's award-winning guru of bicycle repair. In this real-time video, Watch how this master mechanic uses his body ergonomically to maximize his natural power.. He suggests tapping into your inner quality of persistence and curse a little if you have to. BMFU takes apart a heavily corroded BBT from a road bike that was caught in the Hurricane Sandy flood on Long Island. Notice how he gains additional leverage by working with the bike on the ground rather than in a stand. This can be a two-person job, with an assitant (BMX Boy, in this video) holding the bicycle frame for balance. TIP: in the first 2min of the vid, when you're cranking down on the breaker bar, you should really use open palm instead of closed fist (your left hand) there is always the chance that you'll slip and the last thing you want is to smash your fingers on the floor with that breaker bar in hand. learned that the hard way while working on cars...

Sorry for being late to the party as for myself I'll remove a stuck SHIMANO BB with a CYCLUS Bottom bracket removal tool it will be with a threaded keeper that threads into the spindle and this tool will be with a straight unfixed handle, I've been using this tool for roughly 20 years for hard to remove BBs, I'm very surprised that no one is using this tool for such BBs, they newer offering will be with fixed double angled handles and the newer offering will also be with tooling flats so a wrench can be used for assistance for the removal of really stubborn BBs.

A "bottom bracket" is a FRAME part. What most people call a bottom bracket is the crank bearing assembly. The crank bearing, in most cases, screws into the frame part known as the "bottom bracket". Crank bearings can be built up from loose parts: cups, spindle, and balls. Or the bearing can be a cartridge assembly.

Thanks for that. I'm thinking of buying a second hand bike/frame to convert it to an electric bike. This is my biggest fear. Not being a mechanic would heating up the frame gently around the cassette thing help by expanding the encasing bit of the frame and also help crack the crusty erosion? At least I have some idea of what I'm up against. Hunting for a bit of scaffold pole now.
