How to Remove & Replace the Steering Wheel on a Toyota 4Runner

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I show y'all how to swap (or R&R) the steering wheel on Grim Repo, my 3rd generation Toyota 4Runner that I got from Pull-A-Part Auto Salvage in Corpus Christi, TX. Huge thanks to Pull-A-Part for helping make this video possible, and tolerating me in their yard for 3 days!!
This begins my epic series on all of the things that Grim Repo is going to need to restore him to his former glory! Also, stay tuned for my story of how I found and chose Grim Repo. That series is going to debut in the New Year!

Wow it's been a long time since I've changed a steering wheel. I haven't changed one with an air bag, so good info for me. I recently bought a steering wheel puller on clearance at Sears. It's similar to this one, but doesn't have a case. I bought it because it looked like a good one and it was so cheap.

@@jakegerwig8798 Yes I did. I'm a tool guy so any chance to add to my arsenal I jump on, but I tried to pull off the used one I got at Pick-Your-Part but couldn't. Maybe because vehicle was in a wreck to end up at Pick-Your-Part? I did use it three times: One to remove from the donor vehicle. Two to remove my bent wheel from my vehicle. Three to remove the new wheel from my vehicle and reinstall because I put it on crooked the first time. Maybe I could of tried prying the donor vehicle wheel off with a big flat head or something but the whole steering column was disconnected from the dash and almost floating loose so when I pulled on the wheel, the whole column moved. Basically no resistance to focus just on the wheel. I didn't want to pry on my vehicle. FYI my airbag connector was a little different than hers. It disconnected differently but still worked.

Faye Hadley thank you for replying, Faye! I have a 1999 Lexus es300 with tan interior and the steering wheel is about as bad as your old 4-runner one. I found a beautiful black steering wheel with wood on top and bottom for $80 on EBay. Do you think it will look ok to have a tan center horn and black steering wheel? Thanks. Also, when I brake, the steering wheel shakes. The harder I brake the more violently the steering wheel shakes. My breaks and rotors were replaced two years ago along with bushings in the rack and pinion. I recently replaced sway bar links. The steering wheel does have a lot of play in it (I have to turn it a lot more to make the car go where I want it to). I have 280,000 miles on the car. What parts do I need to check to diagnose this problem? Apparently, steering wheel shaking is one of the hardest things to diagnose. Thank you so much and sorry for the long message.!
