This video is about how to Remove C Clip axles out of a Ford 8.8 that is commonly found in Ford explorers. This 8.8 differential is equipped with 4.10 gears and a limited slip. This will all be changed out to a detroit truetrac in the future. First I need to strip the axle down and rebuild it. to remove the C clips you don't need to remove the differential spring you can fish the clips out by pushing them out

    I knew you were going to do that. Rounding off that lock pin hex is an absolute nightmare. It’s too easy to to heat the carrier with your bernzomatic torch and soften that loctite red. Doesn’t take that much heat either. It took me only one time and I learned real quick. Warm that loctite and that bolt will spin right out!

    Instead of hitting the wrench with your hammer, lock the box end of another wrench to the open end of the wrench you're trying to turn. Instant extension, easier to break loose. You're welcome.

    When putting the C-clip back in, does it matter if you have the rounded edge facing outboard or inboard?

    1. Better to remove pin bolt 8mm with a socket and swivel joint to a ratchet. Bolt needs to be fully removed. 2. The pin can be removed with a small 1/8in flat head screw driver inserted into the hole where the 8mm hole was. So you don't need a magnet at all.

    I just spent 30 min trying to remove the c clip. Its still binding up despite pushing the axle in, rotating the differential and ripping out the little rubber ring. I've used vaous picks and no luck. Any ideas? Ty

    Use 2 small screwdrivers and push the clip out and use a magnet to fish it out

    @@TestDontguess I managed to get them out by tapping on them with a hammer and flat screw driver. I like your screw idea but I didn't see it in time. One thing that might have been helpful and gave me some more slack is removing the speed sensors! I forgot about them! . Thanks.

    The very first thing that you did wrong was not to heat the carrier up in order to loosen the 8 mm pin Bolt. The last thing you want to do is break that puppy off. When you heat it up it is almost loose. It will have lock tight on it if it has been placed in their properly. You have to heat the lock tight up in order to loosen the bolt

    how do you heat it without setting the oil on fire?

  • @quevicular

    @quevicular

    Жыл бұрын

    @@jesse.vr6 you only have to heat it up mildly to break it loose because it has thread locker in it. You're not heating the entire differential up with a acetylene torch, all you need is the little 1 lb propane torch and that is all that is required

    I hate the strong smell old gear oil when you remove the diff cover. It usually takes a few hours to clear out the stink from the garage... If it even clears out! lol
