How to Remove an Original Xbox Clock Capacitor (v1.0 - 1.5)

Ойындар

Xbox consoles ranging from motherboard revisions 1.0 - 1.5 are known to have a clock capacitor which can blow and leak out onto the motherboard, potentially causing damage to the rest of your components. This was corrected in the 1.6 variant of the Xbox, but prior to that it's all a matter of when your clock capacitor will blow, not if it will blow! This tutorial serves as a guide to show you which capacitor is the problematic one and how to remove it. You can replace it with a new capacitor if you so wish to, however users rarely feel the need to do that. The only side effect of this removal on a stock Xbox is that the clock will need to be set on boot every single time you unplug the console from a power source. If you have a softmodded console, ensure your softmod install is one that sets the time automatically to a specific date on boot!
The method I use for removal is a soldering iron, in which I heat up the two points on the bottom of the motherboard for the capacitor while wiggling it out of place. This is the method I personally use, however you could also CAREFULLY wiggle the capacitor back and forth from the top of the board until it comes off. Either method, I highly recommend cleaning up your work afterwards to clean up any spills or leaks from the capacitor.

Something that might happen as well, is that you'll have 3x capacitors (located just in front of the CPU heatsink) swell, or in the case of my v1.2 with the problem-burst. Kind of a hit and miss problem, and the failed caps are all the same tall+thin Nichicon ones. The Xbox somehow all work perfectly fine without them-though the v1.2 no longer stays turned off.

Thank you for this helpful video. I've removed the clock capacitor and thankfully it did not leak and was in pretty good shape. On the other hand, the 3 3000uf capacitors near the CPU are bulging out and seem like they are close to causing an issue, and definitely needs replacing. It might be a good idea for everyone to check all the capacitors just in case.

I took it off and , while the system worked flawlessly, the clock capacitor ahs already begun to leak which was weird. Thank you for helping me preserve my OG xbox. Also, on some models, the Clock capacitor is on the c7g2 /c7g3 while on mine and yours its on the C7g10. Thank you.

I was dealing with intermittent shutdowns a few years ago and packed my xbox (v1.0) away until I had proper time to take it apart and look at it. I always assumed the power supply needed to be replaced, but it turns out the culprit was this capacitor leaking all over the place. I had lots of goo to cleanup, but it doesn't look like there's any permanent damage. So happy I was able to fix this since my xbox has the 64mb memory upgrade specifically for better Mame support. Everyone with an original xbox needs to do this fix. Fortunately I don't have to deal with the date reset issue since xbmc or my Xecuter mod chip is addressing it.

Ah thanks for this, my Mum is having a clear out so I'm grabbing her Xbox and knowing about this issue I wanted to look into how to remove this. She complains about having to set the time on it, so it sounds like either the clock capacitor has gone bad or it was already removed before she got it. I'm not really a techy person, but this looks simple enough to do!!

Hey Mario, just bought 2 xboxs as I wanted to try modding them. I know one is a 1.3 revision however the other one I can't tell as the bottom stickers have worn off. Also, the Xbox in question doesn't boot up and flashes red and green. I think it might be a bad eeprom chip but I'm not certain. Anyway, is there a way to tell what version this is based on the motherboard? It doesn't have the controller board so it's not a 1.0 I just want to make sure it's not a 1.6 before I remove the cap. Thanks!

I’ve asked this question in other places in the past hour or so but I’m still looking for answers. Clock Capacitor Question I got my Xbox off eBay a few weeks ago and was made in January 2004, months before the 1.6 version. I’m unsure whether modifications were made or not, because the controller I got had the control sticks replaced with PS2 ones. Also my power strip keeps getting unplugged and whenever I boot up my Xbox after this it takes me to the clock set up, but if I power it off and on without being unplugged, it takes me straight to the menu or game. So could the clock capacitor potentially be already removed or not? I haven’t opened it up to check but I am curious for obvious reasons. And by the way, I unplugged my Xbox, plugged it back in seconds later, powered it on, and I get the clock menu, but the stickers are still there.

Thanks. I’m not sure what revision I have exactly but it’s made in Aug 2002, it looks new. The clock cap was sitting flush all the way down and I had to solder it out of there. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t working as the console would ask me for the time anyway. It didn’t look like it was leaking or anything. Hopefully having it out of the Xbox physically keeps it from rotting my system.

If you have a hairdryer available, you can gently heat up the top of the heatsinks for 30 seconds at a time or so. Although what I normally do is have the console mostly taken apart, turn it on for a few minutes, then turn it off. When the heatsinks are warmed up they're much easier to take off. So with the clock capacitor being prone to leaking couldn’t you just buy a newer one (that doesn’t leak) and install that or is it best to just remove it and keep it gone?

My Xbox that I got second hand is a version 1.0-1.1 and it has never been opened (I'm assuming, because the serial number / barcode sticker is still mint and covering the one screw). However, I still have to set the date/time every time I plug the console back in and boot it up... Assuming the clock capacitor is still in there as it has never been opened, What does this mean??

I need to do this to my Xbox that I started using again. I picked up this one used at GameStop years ago. My original Halo version stopped working one day. I saved it in event I decided to try fixing. It’s sat in my closet for years. Last night I decided to plug in the GameStop Xbox to play something. It started off fine but after a few minutes it turned off and started flash orange light. After trying 3 different AV cables getting the same issue. I did notice fan seemed loud and console felt warm. I also noticed fan wasn’t spinning. The thermal fan was the only one going at high speed.I decided to open it. The fan stopped working so I decided to try my OG Halo one it still turned on and fan worked. I also opened the Halo edition. I was saddened because I found capacitors had leaked and also a lot of corrosion and rust was in now. The fan still worked so I removed the fan to put in my other Xbox. I was surprised that my used Xbox had no leakage at all. The Xbox I got from GameStop was an older version than the Halo Edition. I swapped the fan. I also reapplied thermal paste on CPU and GPU with Thermal Grizzly. I put back the Xbox to test and to my surprise it started working again no flashing orange light and both fans spinning. I was so happy! Now I need to go back in to remove the clock capacitor. I’m debating on just to remove it than replacing it. I don’t want this dying on me too.

I was too slow with mine and didn't know about this issue until two days ago. I took mine apart and the capacitor has leaked. So I removed it and cleaned the board, but a heap of components around the capacitor have been damaged to the point that when I cleaned the board, the components dropped off. There's no longer solder pads anymore. So, although my XBox turns on, it powers off within a few minutes as I think it's overheating (the GPU heatsink is really hot). I don't know what else it could be. Very disappointed as this was a great console. Moral to the story: Don't wait as long as I did. If you own one, do it. It's a piece of piss to do and may save you tears.

  • @MrMario2011

Should only replace it with a capacitor, but even then a capacitor really only holds the time for a few hours. In my opinion it isn't worth replacing, it's the Xbox equivalent of the appendix: Serves little/no purpose inside, can cause plenty of damage if something happens, can continue on with life without it.

MRgrimlock84 I opened up my 1.4 Halo xbox to find a golden Nichicon clock capacitor - after a little googling it seems as though these golden capacitors are the higher-quality Japanese made capacitors that Microsoft switched to after they realized the black Chinese capacitors were failing. My xbox was manufactured 01/31/2004, just a few months before they started producing 1.6s. Hope this information helps. I'll leave my gold capacitor in for now.
